1 Rosin Dust December 2015 Blue Mountain Old-Time Fiddlers Association Connecting fiddlers - young and young at heart PRESIDENT S MESSAGE It's hard to believe it is December! Already it's time for another message and Christmas right around the corner. A note from Denny: I saved a deer (a big one, too) and I saved a monstrous bull elk (no point in being greedy)! I didn't see either that I wanted to shoot. Just had a great time with family telling them what I use to be able to do, and go. I hunted in the wilderness back country for 35 years when we had 8 head of horses and all the energy and "want" to get out there and be tough in cold windy, snowy, slick weather. All that time I was working a job and living on a 30 acre "Ma & Pa Kettle" farm. My Indian hunting partner passed away and it's not been the same. My son went along in later years but now hunts with his son in other places. Enough of the past but you know I still have all those years written down and recorded. I have the souvenirs from those wonderful times. I have 54 sets of deer antlers, 21 sets of elk antlers, and 46 sets of elk teeth, and pictures. Well, I knew you wanted to know all this but now on to my message. We were sorry to hear of the passing of Doris Larson of Burbank, Washington. She was a great fan and we will miss seeing her at our shows in the Hermiston area. Our thoughts are with her friend of many years, Charlie Raeder. The BlueMountaineers have had to give up Jack Fox, who turned 95 in September. We have missed Jack very much. Ray Omohondro and his wife have had health problems and so has Merle Feik but they still play and sing when they can. We will have a busy December as we are scheduled to play 19 times during the month. I played an hour Saturday, November 21st at the Union Methodist Church bazaar with a group of upcoming fiddlers in the area led by Melody Huitt and daughter Breanna. This group also includes Diana D., Sherry, Anna, Cindy and Mark Snyder, Vickie was there earlier. They are really doing great. They played for 3 hours. Keep your eye on the 2016 schedule and mark them on your calendar so we can have another great year of fiddling music. It is time to renew your membership so you don't miss any Rosin Dust issues! The earlier you renew the better it is for our secretary and our editor, who do a great job in keeping things straight and on time. Thank you, ladies, for your hard work that lasts all year for you. 2 GRANT COUNTY Jams continue at Valley View Assisted Living on Thursday evenings and at the Out Post Pizza Pub & Grill on Sunday afternoons. Jam organizer Ron Phillips and I are formulating some ideas and possible locations for the County Fair Board of Directors to consider for our performance during the August 10-13, 2016 fair. We are striving for less carnival noise, a larger (covered) stage, a possible ramp and set of steps with 6" risers and hand rails so as to access both sides of the stage. If we are forgetting something, give me a call and let me know. When we are on the agenda, we want all our ducks in a row. No issue left behind. Well it is a day or so away from Thanksgiving as I write this, but it be nigh on Christmas when you read the Rosin Dust so I'm going to get right with the reason for the season. Don't get me wrong, I am thankful for many things. But Christmas tops my list of being thankful. It was the beginning...of His plan, the birth of Jesus who would save me from the pit of hell. Trust me friends, I would be confined in a jail cell or, maybe worse, had he not beckoned me to come HIS WAY. It was an invitation to turn from darkness to the light and I did just that as I accepted his free gift of life. Since that time I am daily thankful for all things, the good and the bad. Ephesians 5:20 sums it up this way "Give thanks for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ". It's easy to be thankful for the good, not so easy to be thankful for the bad. However Isaiah 41:10 comforts with... 'Do not fear, for I am with you; Do not anxiously look about you, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, surely I will help you, surely I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.' This is one of many scriptures to cling to the way things are progressing in the world today. If anyone has seen the video that I posted on my FB page, you will understand what I am talking about. It is only a matter of time for America. I cannot help but say "Come Lord Jesus - Soon" Grant County Director Carolyn Stout MORROW COUNTY It s almost Turkey Day and here I sit, left leg all messed up, a couple trips to the doctor and a shot with a long needle in the knee. It does feel a little better, not as much as I would like, but some improvement. I haven t done anything musical at all and I haven t talked to many people. Les Haynes got a new hip the other day. I talked to him a couple of days ago; he said he starts therapy this coming week. I hope everyone is well or on the mend. The weather has turned sort of cold. We had an inch and a half of snow a couple of days ago along with some colder weather and a windstorm. The neighbor has a few head of stock here now, not a bad deal except I am getting tired of chopping ice. I m getting too old for such foolishness. Besides, it s a little hard getting around with a bum knee and using a cane. Oh well, that s life. Right now the dog is lying in front of the stove. Judy s sitting watching TV and I m sitting here writing this. What a life! Thanksgiving is creeping up on us. I think the family will all be here again. There is a lot to be thankful for. At least it s quiet this corner of the world. Merry Christmas to all and a Happy New Year. 3 UNION COUNTY Hi All, Well I have to say that Thanksgiving is done and gone and we had a good time. We had family, friends, and neighbors for dinner and we set up in our shop. We ate way to much food and then we did a few songs before everyone became too tired from the darn turkey. Looks some of the girls and guys have been playing around in the valley. They have played at the Union Methodist Church and La Grande Post- Acute Rehab. Those involved have been Michael, Denny, Sherry, Melody, Diana, Cindy, Anna and Vickie. I know that these places all appreciate the music during the Holidays. Not much else to tell you so please have a safe and wonderful Christmas. Union County Director Vickie Hagey April 15 & 16, 2016 will be the Annual BMOTFA Meeting and Show. Hope to see you all there. UMATILLA COUNTY November has been very much like October. I have been out of touch due to a combination of hunting and working cattle. Joan Gray went over to Grande Ronde Valley over Thanksgiving to visit with her kids and grandkids. While she was there, she spent an hour or so jamming with Vickie Hagey and friends. Also Mark Ludwick and Joan Gray helped Denny Langford at the monthly dance at the Senior Center in La Grande. Denny found that he and the BlueMountaineers didn t have any singers for the evening, due to illness. So Denny called Mark, who picked up Joan in Elgin, and they filled in as best they could. It seemed that the senior folk had a good time. Did you hear the joke about the broken pencil? There was no point to it.
