1 WHAT TO BRING TO THE MEETING Name tag Block party block Show-and-Tell Door prizes for F, G, H BIRTHDAYS SUE HEARD MAY 16 SHIRLEY ALLEN MAY 30 VISITORS Welcome to our April visitors! It was wonderful to see so many visitors at our April meeting. We hope you will come back and join us at our May meeting. Our visitors were: Julie Schneider, Karen Holder, Mary Johnson, Janice Barnes, Dorothy Smith, Carol Miller, Marilyn Smith, Sandra Bufkin and Michelle Atwood. JOIN US Regular monthly meetings are held on the first Monday of each month from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church of Grand Prairie, 310 S. W. 3rd St., Grand Prairie, Texas. All visitors are welcome (ages 10 and up). http ://qgogp.wordpress.com QUILTER S GUILD OF GRAND PRAIRIE Founded July 5, 1993 Our Guild has been formed to preserve the heritage of quilting, to be a source of information and inspiration, to perpetuate high quality of excellence in quilting and to be a gathering place for people with a common interest. PRESIDENT S CORNER MAY 2016 NEXT MEETING: MAY 2, 2016 I finished a quilt top the other night and wanted to continue sewing but didn t really want to start a new project so I turned to my scraps. Once upon a time I wouldn t bother to keep these small bits of fabric. They were of no consequence to me. Now, they are carefully sorted by size, prized and hoarded like gems. By themselves most people would say they hold little value, but assembled, these small pieces still have so much life left in them just look at any crazy quilt. My deposits into the scrap bin far exceed the withdrawals. I can create a top strictly from scraps and not even make a dent in the stash. To think, if those scraps are converted back into yardage, imagine how much fabric one actually throws away. That will make you think twice. Even the smallest pieces too small to use can still have a second life as filler for pet beds. Nothing goes to waste. Three cheers for scraps. Happy Sewing! TORY SWARTZWELDER DOOR PRIZES If your last name begins with F, G and H please bring a door prize to the May 2016 meeting and give it to Kathy Poole. This is a voluntary effort, but most of us like to receive a door prize and we hope everyone will participate. Please bring only quilting related items such as: Quilting Notions, fat quarters, triangle paper, magnetic pin holders, scissors, Pigma pens, etc. QGOGP.WORDPRESS.COM

During the spring of 1861 the new Confederacy established an army, organizing local militia, seizing federal weapons at Southern armories and issuing a call for troops. The first call established a 12-month term of service. Surely the War would be over by the spring of TREASURER S REPORT Diarist Sarah Morgan, who speaks for many Confederate women, changed from a careless girl to a heart-broken woman during the War. The contrast is evident in the evolution of her writing about her brothers. Her first enthusiastic accounts of George, Gibbes and Jimmy joining the Confederate troops reflected dreams of battlefield glory. July 11th, A letter from George this morning! It was written on the 20th of June, and he speaks of being on crutches in consequence of his horse having fallen with him, and injured his knee. Perhaps, then, he was not in the first battle of the 25th? But bah! I know George too well to imagine he would keep quiet at such a moment, if he could Unknown Confederate soldier possibly stand! I am sure he was there with the rest of the Louisiana regiment. The papers say the conduct of the First Louisiana is beyond all praise ; of course, George was there! Sarah s hopes for her brothers heroics soon became anxiety for their safety and vain prayers for their survival. In the last months of the War both Gibbes and George died within a week. On the 30th of January [1865] came [Gibbes s] last letter, addressed to me, though meant CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE Two percent of the population of the United States died during the 4-year War. All his letters pleaded that I would write more frequently he loved to hear from me; so I had been writing to him every ten days. On the 3d of February I sent my last. Friday the 5th I saw [our eldest] Brother pass the door, and heard him ask for mother. The voice, the bowed head, the look of utter despair on his face, struck through me like a knife. Gibbes! Gibbes! was my sole thought; but Miriam and I stood motionless looking at each other without a word. Gibbes is dead, said mother as he stood before her. He did not speak Sarah s diary speaks so eloquently of the family loss, but she, her sisters, sisters-in-law and mother were just a very few of the hundreds of thousands of women who lost soldiers during the Civil War. each diagonally with one cut.
