Michelle Atwood was a returning visitor to our May meeting. We hope that you will return to our June meeting and join our Guild! JOIN US Regular monthly meetings are held on the first Monday of each month from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church of Grand Prairie, 310 S. W. 3rd St., Grand Prairie, Texas. All visitors are welcome (ages 10 and up). http ://qgogp.wordpress.com QUILTER S GUILD OF GRAND PRAIRIE Founded July 5, 1993 Our Guild has been formed to preserve the heritage of quilting, to be a source of information and inspiration, to perpetuate high quality of excellence in quilting and to be a gathering place for people with a common interest. PRESIDENT S CORNER JUNE 2016 NEXT MEETING: JUNE 6, 2016 Happy Spring! You know what that means.spring cleaning. It may take time away from sewing but it can be well worth it to clean, refold, consolidate, organize and put things in their place. I ve been known during this process to find a particular item I had long since forgotten or given up locating. I sew more during the winter months and find it especially important to clean and oil my machine. Consider taking it in to be professionally serviced. If you can t remember the last time you replaced your needle, do so now. Believe it or now, that small act, really does make a difference. Get on a roll---replace the blade in your rotary cutter and treat yourself and have your scissors sharpened. Take care of your investment so you can enjoy many more hours sewing this spring. I look forward to seeing your creations at the next show and tell. Happy Sewing. TORY SWARTZWELDER DOOR PRIZES If your last name begins with L please bring a door prize to the June 2016 meeting and give it to Kathy Poole. This is a voluntary effort, but most of us like to receive a door prize and we hope everyone will participate. Please bring only quilting related items such as: Quilting Notions, fat quarters, triangle paper, magnetic pin holders, scissors, Pigma pens, etc. QGOGP.WORDPRESS.COM

Remember to bring your favorite storage ideas to share with everyone! Storage can be for fabrics, ongoing projects or even just your sewing notions! Also, please make sure that if you volunteered to take a box last month JUNE PROGRAM for Operation Shoebox that you bring it back for the next meeting so that someone else may have a chance to make a block for our charity quilt! Remember, you may use the fabric in the box or you may use any in your stash, but please make sure either way there is enough fabric left in the box for the next volunteer to make a 12 inch by 12 inch block. There are no minimum fabrics that must be used and you may use ANY pattern you wish and the fabric must be red, white, blue or any combination of these colors! (And on a side note, overachievers are MORE than welcome for this particular project and will not be turned away! If you can only make one block, we understand completely, but the more blocks we have, the more quilts we could make. So if you would like to make more, they will be gladly accepted!!!) CARRIE STANFORD
4 VOL. 23 NO JUNE 2016 A couple of things: I encourage everyone to shop for Civil War fabric. I would suggest getting fat quarters to choose from for the Blocks of the each month. Please stick to BLOCK OF THE MONTH the color scheme that you see each month on the example. The blue can be light or dark for example, but it should be blue. We will be drawing each month for a winner of the blocks. The finished blocks are 8.5" squared. Any questions, contact Christine at blntn606@ sbcglobal.net or CHRISTINE BLANTON STAR OF THE WEST Star of the West by Becky Brown Star of the West can symbolize the Frémonts. Jessie and John C. Frémont were a mid-19th century power couple. Their marriage was a political partnership, an idea ahead of its time. Jessie s father was an important Senator, so she had many influential friends and relatives. John was known for his western explorations, for his Presidential run as the first Republican candidate in 1856 and for his arrogance in the face of authority. During the summer of 1861 General Frémont became commander of the Union Army in Missouri, a difficult job in a state torn by conflicting loyalties. TREASURER S REPORT On August 30th he declared martial law, describing Missouri as disorganized and infested by murderers and marauders under a helpless civil authority, He stated that armed rebels would be court-martialed, shot and their property confiscated. Furthermore, their slaves are hereby declared freemen. Frémont s Missouri emancipation proclamation displeased President Lincoln. The Commander-in-Chief sent a letter by special messenger on September 2nd, warning Frémont that liberating slaves of traitorous owners will alarm our Southern Union friends and turn them against us. The idea of confiscated slaves as contraband was one thing, confiscated slaves as free men another. Frémont publicly refused to rescind his order. Jessie went to Washington to argue their case for emancipation with Lincoln. She later wrote of their encounter, recounting her argument that Frémont s move would win the Union international friends. The President said You are quite a female politician. I felt the sneering tone and saw there was a foregone decision Jessie Benton Frémont against all listening. Then the President spoke more rapidly and unrestrainedly: The General ought not to have done it... the General should never have dragged the negro into the war. It is a war for a great national object and the negro has nothing to do with it. Lincoln recalled the testy meeting for his secretary. She sought an audience with me at midnight and taxed me so violently with many things that I had to exercise all the awkward tact I have to avoid quarreling with her. CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE Frémont was a western explorer and a founder of the state of California. Beginning balance... $ Ending balance... $
5 JUNE VOL. 23 NO. 11 CONTINUED FROM PREVIOUS PAGE Jessie was remarkably out of place, a wife deputized to discuss policy with the President. The meeting went badly and so did Frémont s subsequent career. Lincoln removed him from the Missouri command in November. The War remained an official fight for the Union, not a fight against slavery...for the time being. Star of the West (#1128 in 2-7/8". 6 RARE Science RARE Bear Program Why is there an urgent need for helping rare kids? There are over 15 million children in the US that suffer from a rare disease. These children are often misdiagnosed and/or do not have medicines available for them. 30% of these children die before their 5 th birthday. RARE Science empowers Patient Families and Disease focused Foundations by providing new tools to accelerate finding more immediate treatments. RARE Science s accelerated approach addresses the urgency needed to help the most vulnerable of patients, children. What is the RARE Bear Army and how can you help? Join forces with RARE Science, Inc. a non-profit organization that helps find cures for kids with rare disease. The RARE Bear Project is a community driven initiative and is supported by the ever-growing RARE Bear Army of Volunteers that help make one-ofa-kind bears for special one of a kind kids. Although all the bears will be made to specific guidelines using Simplicity pattern C5461, it is the contribution of each team member s fabric "stash and donations that make each bear unique. RARE bears given to the kids will have a serial number specifically made for a child in our program. Each quilter that makes a bear for a child receives a picture of the child and the gifted RARE bear. Some RARE bears are also made for gifts for those who donate a certain amount to our programs to support rare disease research! Our philosophy at RARE Science is that alone we all can make great contributions to our community but together we can change children s lives! How do I join to make a special RARE Science RARE Bear and/or donate? We need quilters, stuffers, donations of fabric and other material. If you would like to join the RARE Bear Army and make a RARE Bear or start your own Rare Bear making group, please contact us to get the special instructions that complement Simplicity pattern C5461 and additional RARE Bear material (RARE Bear ribbon of authenticity and feet fabric). Please contact us also if you want to volunteer for other RARE Bear Army activities. Be a part of the RARE Bear Army, drive research forward for the rare disease community and change the lives of rare children!
