Psalm 138:4 4 May all the kings of the earth praise you, O Lord, when they hear the words of your mouth. In this season of my life, God s love is awesome, forgiving, inspiring and so incredible at times I m at a loss to express my gratefulness. Any return of love on my part seems woefully inadequate. I have also come to realize God doesn t expect me to love perfectly as He does; He just expects me to depend upon Him to love others. Do I succeed? Well, most times I do and sometimes I don t! What I do know is if I want the best chance to love as God loves and have my actions demonstrate God s love, I must make the conscious decision to keep God a priority every day, every hour, every minute and every second of my life. I honestly haven t succeeded in doing this completely, but with the Holy Spirit s guidance, I m working on it by 1) committing every morning to being His vessel; 2) praying for each person before and after an appointment; and 3) welcoming interruptions as God appointments! If I neglect these things and don t make Him preeminent in my heart, words or actions, I m in danger of falling short of Godly loving. I ve been there, done that and I don t desire to occupy that space again! As I begin my 7 th year as your Kahu, I invite you to join me in making God preeminent in our daily lives. Let s show Honolulu what they are missing by not following Jesus. Let s make them hunger to know our loving God and desire to want what we have in Him. I don t know totally what this means for each of us or how it will happen, but I want to be completely given over to the joy and privilege of having God be #1 in my life. Join me in devotion to prayer, asking and giving forgiveness, living God s Word & reaching out to those in need? My conviction is when we are about God s business, He makes us His business. Come on now! Haven t you wanted to be more like Jesus, be empowered to live supernaturally and to expect miracles? What do we have to lose? And on the other hand look at what we stand to gain? Me ke aloha pau ole! Kahu Curt ~ Mission Statement ~ Kawaiaha o Church honors and affirms Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. Through God s word expressed through worship, education, and mission, we will equip God s disciples unto faithfulness and fruitfulness. We will clearly represent Jesus Christ to others and perpetuate our Hawaiian cultural heritage. Adopted April 2007

Nā Iwi Committee - Still Searching for a chair At the Regular Board of Trustee Meeting held on July 21st, the Board voted for Claire Steele to fill the vacancy on the Board caused by Mary Jane Coila being called home. In accordance with the By-Laws, Claire will serve until the congregational meeting in October when an election will be held to fill the rest of that vacated term. We welcome the new Board members and thank the ones who have left us. Especially Mary Jane who was signing checks on her bed at her daughters house a week before she passed on. Mary Jane Coila Kahala Coila My mom was so much to so many people, that in many ways, no matter what I say, it will never be enough to say how much she meant to so many of us. Before my mom was anything else. She was a daughter. On April she was born in Ho olehua, Moloka i to Danny and Louise Kekahuna. She was then sister to her brothers Danny, Loki and Terrace and her sister Lani. My mom would tell me about her childhood growing up on the farm and about long talks with her grandmother, grandmamma. It was these talks with her grandmamma that I think led to my mom s absolutely unwavering determination. It was also from her grandmother that she developed her lifelong faith in God that would help her make it through everything that was dealt her. I don t know the details of all the talks that they had but she would often times tell me that her reason for doing things was because, she promised her grandmother that she would. One of the promises that I know she made to her was that she would become college educated. When my mom was 12 she was accepted to Kamehameha Schools as a boarding student. It was there that she became a lifelong friend to her classmates. In the few weeks prior to her passing, several of her classmates came to the house to give their aloha and talk story. I was privileged to be able to hear the stories and listen to them sing songs. They would talk story of how they learned how to budget their money so they could take the bus to china town to watch a movie and eat shave ice. They would talk story of how they learned how to trick the dorm mother when it came time for bra and panty check. I m still not sure what exactly that meant and I hope everyone knows how uncomfortable it can make you feel to talk about your mom s old bra and panty stories but it was told with such fondness that I had to bring it up. My mom graduated from Kamehameha Schools in 1966 then went on to college in the Pacific northwest at Pacific University. But before my mom went off to college she returned home to Molokai and achieved one of the things she was most proud of. Runner up in the Miss Moloka i beauty pageant. I believe it was also at this time that she landed the cover for the Moloka i travel brochure as The Moloka i Maiden. These things were some of us kids favorite things to tease my mom about. But all joking aside, and yes I am biased, but, my mother was a very very beautiful woman. She had the type of beauty that ran deep within her and radiated out. I was once told, Yes, your sisters are very beautiful women, but your mudda was the kind beauty that would cause cars to crash on the roadside. My mom was never one to put much stock in outer beauty though. She would be the first one to put on a pair of rubber boots and go outside to pull weeds in puka t-shirt that she had inherited from one of my sisters after I had outgrown it. She had so much inner beauty that even as time took it s toll and youthful attraction went away. It only revealed that her beauty had always come from within and it stayed with her to the very end. Even through the cancer she would put on her hat, hold her head high and present herself with dignified elegance.

3 Cont. Mary Jane Coila Kahala Coila After my mom went away to college she met my dad and was married. She then became mother to my oldest sister Mahealani and a year later to my sister Makani. But it was still another 2 years until she was blessed with a boy. That boy is me. I can without question say that those years that my mom had as a young mother were some of the happiest of her life. She was at this time a young single mother all alone in Washington state with nobody to help her but her 3 young children. And it was awesome! It was about this time that I know my mom s determination and perseverance were really maturing. In spite of the fact that we had little money and few resources, we were a happy family that enjoyed being together. It was my mom s faith that she had adopted from my grandmother that made her able to always maintain hope and direction. Though she had stepped away from the fellowship of the church, it was her faith that helped us all to be so happy. My mom was also a worker. When I was about 3 years old my mom told me that she was going to get a job. I was a little kid so I didn t want her to get a job. Life was good my sisters would go to school and my mom would do errands and I would play and then she would clean the house and I would eat lunch. Then she would do whatever mom s do and I would take a nap. How much better could life be and why would she ever want to change things. But she wanted to change things because she promised her grandmother that she would improve upon the gifts she had been given. She did not want to take the gifts for granted or settle with good enough. For the next 30 years my mom worked for Safeway. It wasn t always a glamorous life. In the earlier years we didn t have many extras but my mom was determined to make her life and our lives better. She would go to work all day, then come home and do all of the things that she had done before. Clean the house, pay the bills, make dinner, teach us how to be good people and all the other things that moms do. But she always seemed to enjoy it. She did it was with a smile on her face and singing songs. As long as she knew there were more coupons to be clipped and another episode of Star Trek, the world was good! For those of you who know my sister Makani, you know that she works all day 7 days a week. Then she goes home to take care of her kids. She takes the kids to practices and functions. Somehow seeming to get an extra couple of hours out of every day that the rest of us don t seem to find. Makani gets that tireless work ethic from my mom. My mom taught us all to work hard. To set goals and then to never give up until your goals are reached. Makani ex- cels at this. The only difference is, as I said, my mom smiled and sang songs while she did it. Makani well, she doesn t clip coupons either. Also, Makani has the help of her amazing husband Dean Maeva. I am always thankful for Dean being in her life and being a great husband to her. Even when he gets backed up he does the work of an entire village. My mom recognized that as well. And managed through her crafty ways, just the night before she passed away to make Dean promise to take care of Makani and the kids from now on forever. After us kids graduated from high school and moved out of the house, my mom then became something that she cherished the most, a grandmother, a role she wore well. In 1990 my sister Mahealani gave birth to a beautiful baby girl named Kahea. For those who know my sister, Mahealani, you know that she is always happy and has eternal optimism. Mahealani was the first born. She was the only one who knew what it was like to get all the attention and not have to share it. The gift that our mom gave to Mahealani during that time was Mahealani s endless glow. Mahealani then passed that optimism to her daughter. Kahea was the first grandchild and my mom loved her endlessly. Kahea grew up on the mainland but that didn t stop my mom from trying to teach her to be Hawaiian. My mom would sing Hawaiian lullabies and take her to camp ohana and they would go to the Hawaiian explorations program. Kahea was taken early from this world in I know that my mom is with her now and I hope that my grandmother is teaching them both to weave lauhala. As a grandmother with grown children mom was able to make decisions not based on what the best thing for her children was but instead what it was that she wanted to do. She quickly became involved with many social groups and went skiing, and biking. She went on cruises with her girlfriends and toured Italy and France. She was also able at this time to achieve something she had promised her grandmother a long time ago. In 1995 she went back to school at Washington State University to complete her undergraduate degree as an English major. It mattered very much to my mom to keep the promises you make. And she would not have left this world so peacefully had she not fulfilled the promise she had made to her grandmother so many years before. Another thing she became was a serendipitous book of wisdom. There was an occasion I found myself in a bit of a trouble with the law. I didn t know how I was going to get out of the mess I was in and my mom always told me never to call asking for bail money but I did anyway. She didn t bail me out but instead simply said, Son, there are a million reasons for not accomplishing the things you want in life. You just have to find the one reason you can do something, and focus on it. I sat in jail and wondered how did she not understand what I was trying to say. It was with this that I learned that the thing that makes the biggest difference in your life is attitude. I know it is cliché but, when the world hands you a basket of lemons, make lemonade. I got out of jail and never went back. In 2002 my mom moved back to Hawai i. She was the happiest that I can remember her being since we were kids. She reactivated her faith in the Lord and was able to find fellowship at Kawaiaha o. She had friends that she cared about and friends that cared about her. She had raised her children to all be active and participating members of society. Most of all she was with family and got to see and help raise her grandchildren. She did her job well and left her legacy better than when she came into the world. May we all do the same for our children. I think the thing that my mom would like us all to take away from having her in our lives, is to dare to live our dreams. She would not want us to mourn her loss for too long. Instead she would want us to remember the happy memories she has given us. She would want her passing to inspire us to do something great. Don t be afraid to fail but be afraid to have never tried. That is what my mom would want us all to take from having her in our lives. For the thing she was best of all was my mom. I loved her and will miss her until I see her next. May she travel safe and warm on the rest of her journey with courage and kindness in her heart. Rest in peace Momma. I love you and God bless.

4 Holoholo I Kalua aha aha That's not a Christmas Tree on his leg! Frank Pestana Kalua aha Church, Est Loading it in the helicopter and leaving I got off the plane and into my Alamo Rental and drove off to eat breakfast at the Hotel Moloka i. The last time I was in Moloka i, I stayed at the Hotel Moloka i and Linda and I went back to Honolulu on the SEAFLIGHT Hydrofoil. Except for the absence of pineapples, Moloka i looked the same. I tried to dally over breakfast but found myself outside the locked cattle gate at Kalua aha Church, the first Christian Church on Moloka i, established in 1832, 3 hours early. I figured I would kill an hour walking around the grounds and taking pictures. As I walked around the church property, I noticed some helicopters flying overhead. There were three of them and one of them had a rope with a guy (upon closer inspection he turned out to be a police officer) at the end. So they dropped the officer off in the bushes on the property adjacent to the church. Soon after, they were picking him up again and he had some bushes tied to his leg. The helicopter dropped the officer and his plants (I figure it must be pakalolo) off at the church. The chopper then picked up another officer with more plants and let him down at the same place. The helicopter then landed on the church grounds and the two officers bundled up their plants, placed them in the chopper and jumped in with the plants, and took off. So I was left alone here at the church again, next to a known pakalolo growing site and some errant leaves. The first member to arrive was Dan Kaloi, Kamehameha Class of '53. He unlocked the gate, and their Matson container and I helped him set up the church. We brought out three folding tables and 12 chairs for the service. That took about 10 minutes. Then we started talking story. Uncle Dan's parents were both Kahu at Kalua aha Church. So we discussed the history of the church and who was buried in their graveyard. I shared my story of the pakalolo raid that morning showed him the pictures on my digital camera. He was amazed. Then Stella and Earline Iaea (Mits Shito's sister and niece) showed up. They had the communion elements and other things for the service. They were the reason I was there that morning. Stella, the Moderator at Kalua aha, had asked Kawaiaha o Church to help her build a roof inside the church walls. Mits Shito was chair of the Board at that time. About 5 years later, they got it built and Kawaiaha o Church did kokua $10,000 to build the roof. Mits and I were making plans to attend the service together but he was called home to heaven before we could make it happen. So I went by myself, or at least I thought I did. Some things happened during this trip that almost made me believe Mits came along with me, but that's another mo olelo. As I talked to Stella and Earline (a fellow KS Class of 1967), I told them about the helicopters and said there were probably some leaves still on the property. Stella, being the moderator, wanted to see for sure. Surprise, we found a hand full of cannabis leaves. I said she could add it to her soup, better than kalamungai. She looked at me and suggested I take them back to Honolulu for show and tell. I laughed. Soon the rest of members arrived along with Kahu Fe Ayap, who brought her electric keyboard and put it on one of the tables, so she was Kahu and organist. Then our service began. My kind of service, ohana style on a dirt floor. I thought, this is how Jesus worshipped, except he always had more people at his service than us (we had less than twelve). Kahu Fe gave a good sermon titled, "Healing Reign", about Jesus doing God's work on Sunday and being chastised for doing so. After the service, it was mea ai time. The food was delicious. We had pancit, chicken and papaya soup, rice, and sandwiches. No, Stella didn't add the leaves to the soup. I don't know what she did with them. We ate and fellowshipped until it was time for me to go. I left Kalua aha at 2:30 PM for my 4:30pm flight back to Honolulu. I didn't get back to Honolulu until 7:00pm, but that, too, is another mo olelo. New Roof viewed from outside. Kalua aha Congregation on Aug 22, 2010

5 Volume MMX, Issue 2 Apr-Jun 2010 Aloha Kākou, I know that it has been awhile since I last wrote, ed, called, texted, facebooked, or any other modern form of communication that may exist with most of you. This has been an interesting few months for me. Last month, I watched a large number of my friends graduate. It was a bittersweet occasion for me. It was sweet to celebrate a wonderful accomplishment of finishing school, but bitter because inside we realize that as we move out from Pasadena we will never have the same connection that comes with being in such a tight knit community. Over the last two years we have shared stories, laughs, life, love, and grief with each other. Last month also saw the end of another quarter for me. It also marked the beginning of the end of my time here at Fuller. I have one year left here at Fuller. This past spring quarter was probably my favorite quarter because of the mixture of classes that I had last quarter. My three classes this past quarter were Homelitics (preaching), Missional Church and Leadership, and Race and Christian Identity in the New Testament. I learned so much from these classes that it is difficult to pinpoint one item to share with you all. My final paper in my New Testament class focused on Acts 6:1-6. This text deals with the feeding of the Jewish and Hellenist widows. The Hellenist complained because their widows were being neglected in the distribution of food. The solution that was devised is that the twelve disciples along with the members of the church chose seven men to be the decision makers in the distribution of the food. These men were not randomly selected, but rather all seven men were probably Greek (Hellenist). These selections have incredible implications because these men were chosen from the group that was being mistreated. It was the Hellenist that were being mistreated, and rather than those who already have power finding solutions they relinquished their power. They gave their power over to the people that were the victims of their decision. It was not given to anyone within this group though. The power to make decisions was given to those who were full of the Spirit and of wisdom (Acts 6:4). The disciples became living examples of what it means to empower those in our communities. The disciples were allowing those who were victims to become caretakers of everyone. What does this have to do with us? With Kawaiaha o? With Hawai i? I often like to think of myself as being a victim. I think that at some level everyone likes to themselves as being a victim. The truth is that for myself I have been afforded many privileges that makes me more of a person in power rather than a victim of the system. I think that the challenge for all of us is to look at these places that we are the people in power and ask ourselves how can we empower those who have no, or little, power. The homeless problem in Hawaii has had a huge impact on the Hawaiian community. These people have found themselves in a situation where they are victims. How can we as a church empower these people? How can we be people that breathe life and hope into these communities? How can we walk side by side with these victims and help them to be transformed into people that become victorious? These are questions that are worth our time and effort. Let us start spurring each other on to become people that empower others to live the lives that God has called us to and that Christ has shown us. There is so many other things of Acts 6:1-6 to dig into. It has become one of my favorite texts in the Bible. I can dig into other aspects of this text at another time. Until the next time I write, may our God continue to help you find ways to empower those in your communities to a life that is lived out in His Glory. 6 Kahu Hope Jonathan Pak Kahu Jonathan Pak Having immigrated to Hawai i at the age of two, my only exposure to Christianity was during the participation in my pre-school s Christmas nativity play. It wasn t until I entered a rebellious phase during my teenage years that I was formally introduced to God. My mother, not knowing what to do with her insubordinate son, sought guidance from her hairdresser Sue who suggested that we attend church with her and her family. My mother immediately fell in love with Jesus and dragged the whole family with her to the Pentecostal Asembly of God church every Sunday morning. Having been abruptly introduced to the gospel in this manner, I pretended to obey her but I was only going through the motions. I was attending a Catholic boy s preparatory school that required all students to attend weekly mass and religion class. Consequently I foolishly thought that I knew everything there was to know about God. In 1987 I graduated from Damien High School. I enrolled in Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, graduating in 1961 with a BA (Business Management) degree. I did what was expected of all graduates. I eagerly looked for and found a job. Initially, I enjoyed the feeling of making my own money, but once the novelty wore off, this experience of working in the real world left me empty and made me question the reason for my existence. By now, I had stopped going to church, and so I did not have anything to keep me spiritually grounded. Instead, I succumbed to the drudgery of the Monday to Friday bump and grind. After several years of this, it became clear to me that my idea of the American Dream was elusive and that I was not going to become rich and famous or achieve any of those ambitions goals of my youth. The resulting depression caused me to question my life s purpose as well as God s existence. It was during this low point in my life that I was invited to attend a church service by an Aunt. As I listened to the pastor preach about God s grace, I realized that I did not understand what he was talking about. Intrigued, I continued to attend this particular church with the intent of figuring out what the pastor meant. My regular attendance eventually led me to visit a bible study, and it was in this smaller more intimate setting that I received answers to my questions. It was here that I came to understand who God really was and that we are saved by his grace. My earlier theology was being challenged. I discovered that I could not earn my way into heaven by my efforts or good deeds. This adventure of learning more about God ultimately led me to join a new church, New Hope Christian Fellowship O ahu. This new church was nothing like what I was accustomed to and it furthered my spiritual growth. My direct involvement helped transform my perception of what the church could be. My passion for God grew exponentially as I was exposed to a different theology. The culture of this new church emphasized that we are a priesthood of all believers. It was here that I learned about God s plan for our lives, that every member is a minister called by God to play a specific role within the body of Christ. Here I was given the opportunity to figure out where I fit in. I served in a plethora of ministries: parking cars, helping in the nursery, teaching high school youth, setting up and taking down the sanctuary, leading a small group, coaching small groups, and eventually becoming a staff pastor overseeing our Connections Ministry (helping new members and attendees join the Church). It was an exhilarating and at the same time challenging eight years of serving in this fast paced environment. Countless lives were transformed, mine included. However, as the church continued to grow, we struggled with one question, How do we disciple the masses? This was the pressing challenge that seemed to elude all of our efforts. Although we were growing by 1500 to 2000 new attendees each year, we recognized that we were losing about the same number. Frustrated without any clear answers, I felt-ill equipped to lead our Connections Ministry as we saw thousands leave every year. I wrestled with my ineptitude and distinctively knew that I needed help. After much soul searching and seeking wise counsel, I discerned that my next step in this faith journey was seminary training. Once we (Clarissa and I) decided that I should go back to school, God orchestrated the rest. Within a span of a week I applied to Fuller Seminary, obtained financial support, made the necessary arrangements to move and received our church s blessings (with the understanding that we would return to plant a satellite video download site upon completion of my degree). However, God had other plans for us. While at Fuller, I came to realize that we would not be returning to our former church. I was horrified. I thought that my purpose in attending seminary was to figure out how the early church discipled the masses, and then to return and help our church stop our revolving door problem. As I wrestled with this revelation, I felt like I was betraying all my friends, because my life was literally transformed by Christ in this community of believers. Nevertheless, through multiple experiences God showed me that we would not be returning to our former church. I eventually accepted that my time at seminary was not just about me figuring our How the early church discipled the masses. Rather the reason spent at Fuller Seminary was another step that God was using to prepare and sanctify me in my journey of faith. Realizing that we would not be returning to our former church, Clarissa and I earnestly sought God s direction for our future. A year later Kahu Curt Kekuna of Kawaiaha o Church, the Association of Hawaiian Evangelical Churches and the United Church of Christ entered the picture. Kawaiaha o Church had been searching for a Kahu Hope, and it was two years later that God brought us all together. Members of the search committee said jokingly that they just had to endure the process until I graduated in It was a perfect match. The integration of my pastoral experience and seminary education met Kahu Curt and Kawaiaha o Church s needs. Additionally, I already knew of Kahu Curt and his missional approach to ministrythat followers of Christ are God s agents to accomplish his mission. I was and still am excited about this opportunity to serve Ke Akua and the body of Christ at Kawaiaha o Church.

7 After enjoying a wonderful breakfast at Zippy s in Hawai i Kai the Women of Kawaiaha o had a meeting to go over our next activities. From there we went to join up with our fellow members at Lunalilo Home. When was the last time you held hands with kūpuna and joyously sang "This Little Light of Mine" together, or were blessed by their smiles of appreciation as you danced a spiritual hula for them. Kahu Curt Kekuna, the Women of Kawaiaha o, and Hālau Hula o Kawaiaha o received these blessings when we visited with our senior citizen ohana at Lunalilo Home on August 21, And what a morning that was, celebrating our aloha for one another and our love for our Lord Jesus Christ! Approximately 40 kūpuna were in attendance, all dressed up and smiling from ear to ear, expectant and exuberant, clearly happy to have visitors. Truly this was a day that the Lord made! With Kanani Kawika at the piano, and Sally Akaka Truong leading us in song, we began our celebration with the mele, Ua Mau, which speaks about unity and love. Our senior citizen friends happily joined in the singing. Hālau Hula o Kawaiaha o then performed the hula, Kalana, a song written by Barrett Awai and based on Ephesians 2:8, which says, For it is by grace which you have been saved, through faith--- and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God. Kumu Hula Ardis Gomes choreographed this hula, and her haumāna performed it using the feathered uli uli, the bamboo pū ili, and the ipu gourd. What smiles lit up the faces of the kūpuna to be reminded of God s grace, and transported back in time to the days of their youth when these hula implements were more commonly used. We all sang inspirational songs along with many of the kūpuna. The hālau next danced a vibrant and whimsical hula to a song by Lou Rawls, Pure Imagination, again using the bamboo pū ili. This mele Lunalilo Home Visit Monica Morris/ Becky Kekuna has special significance, as it is a tribute to our imagination, and how anything in life can be realized if we have the courage to dream and accomplish those dreams. Kumu Hula Ardis Gomes also wanted to give an, a hui hou, farewell, until we meet again, to TJ, T L and Karli Tario, who have been such an integral part of our hālau, and who have taken up residence in New York City so that TJ may attend The Julliard School, one of the world s most prestigious performing arts conservatories. This visit to Lunalilo Home was not just about celebrating our seniors, but also about celebrating our youth! The final hula performed by the hālau was the rousing song, The Voice of the Lord by Phillips, Craig and Dean. Ann Kealoha Benavente taught this hula to the halau in preparation for Hebedoma, which took place at the beginning of The words of this song are powerful, including these lyrics: The voice of the Lord is calling His Children, the Voice of the Lord is shaking the Earth, the voice of the Lord echoes like thunder, is awesome in glory, Hear, Hear the Voice of the Lord. At one part during this mele, the hālau shouts out a primordial sound, taking us back to a time when language was still in its developmental stages, but when communication could still be effectively accomplished with urgency and modulation. We ended our celebration by joining hands with our kūpuna and singing the songs, You are My Sunshine, and This Little Light of Mine. Then we prayed, hugged, laughed and shared stories with them. Each one of the kūpuna at Lunalilo Home is unique and has lived a life especially designed and shaped for them by God. And each one of them has a family that loves them, and who calls them Mom, Dad, or Tutu. On August 21, Kahu Curt Kekuna, the Women of Kawaiaha o, and the Halau Hula o Kawaiaha o were part of their lives, and part of their family. May God Bless our kūpuna at Lunalilo Home.

8 Ua lehulehu a manomano ka ikena a ka Hawai i. (Immense and immeasurable is the knowledge of the Hawaiians) "Study Hard! Make good grades! Graduate from high school and go to college. Education will get you far in life!" Many of us grew up hearing our parents and kūpuna drilling these words over and over into our heads. They wanted a better life for us, better than they had. And they in their wisdom knew that a college education from a vocational or professional university was the ticket. For many Hawaiians in our generation, we were the first in our family to graduate from college. What pride this brought to our families. What pride this brought to our Hawaiian community. What lei we enjoyed on graduation day. We had arrived, and could show the world that Hawaiians could succeed at anything. Doctors, lawyers, educators, pastors, engineers, politicians, Hawaiian language and culture practitioners, musicians ---these were careers Hawaiians were aspiring to be in and excelling at. But college education isn t free. Recognizing this need, Kawaiaha o Church created scholarship funds in the 1970 s to help struggling students with college expenses. In the late 1990 s, under the leadership of Kerri Ann Hewett Fraiser, Puanani Caindec, and Ruby Donlin, the Scholarship Committee took a dramatic change by revising and reorganizing the scholarship policy and Scholarship application. Through the years, numerous members and their children and grandchildren have received financial assistance to help with college expenses. Persons such as Daniel Akaka Truong, Claire Steele, Corrie Young, Esera Vegas, Manu Nae ole, Hollan Hendrix, Kaleianuenue Akaka, and Kaleinani Furtado, to name a few. Scholarship awards are given as grants, which students do not need to repay, although some have. Students are, however, expected to give back to Kawaiaha o Church in the form of 10 service hours per semester. Also, undergraduate students need to maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5 and full time status, while graduate students need to maintain a minimum GPA of 3.3, to be eligible for scholarship funds. Recently, on July 11, the Kawaiaha o Church Scholarship Committee announced and recognized its scholarship recipients for the academic year. Award amounts are based on academic excellence, service to Kawaiaha o Church, service to the community, and other characterbased criteria. Students who will be receiving scholarship funds for the upcoming academic year are: Dezarie Caires (UH-Mānoa); Puakailima Davis (Ph.D. candidate, UH-Mānoa); Kate Hendrix (St. Louis University, Madrid-Spain campus); Cheyne Ikaika Kaninau (Linfield College, Oregon); Kanani Kawika (UH-Manoa); Aulani Kekuna (Master's candidate, University of San Diego, California); Kekoa Makua (Honolulu Community Monica Morris

9 College); Megann Sala (UH- Mānoa); Cole Soma (Kapi olani Community College); Noel Soma (Northern Arizona University, Arizona); William Truong (UH- Mānoa); Kevin Wong (Stanford University, California); and Kurt Wong (UH-Mānoa). Cont. Scholarship What a joyous day July 11 was, as we celebrated our ōpio and their ohana. These ōpio, our precious youth, are the future leaders of our Church, and of our local, national and international communities. And so there was much to celebrate on July 11. Crown flower lei handstrung by Ruby and Leighton Donlin were presented to scholarship recipients, and plenty of ono refreshments, provided by Aunty Pua Caindec and Uncle George Panui, were dished out following church service. And lots and lots of pictures of the scholarship recipients and their proud families were taken. Mahalo Ke Akua for a blessed day and for the promise these youth represent. Talk story with these young scholars when you have a chance. Ask them what their dreams are, what their story is, and how they intend to use their gifts and talents to change the world. They will be the first to thank God for all their blessings, and to thank their parents for all the sacrifices made so they could receive a good high school and college education. These youth will make you laugh, they will make you cry, and they will inspire you with the hopes they have for their futures. Many generous donors make this all possible-- individuals who created scholarship funds, or in whose memory scholarship funds were created, and we wish to thank them: Ruby Ethel Kono (Hosoi); Owen and Mary K. Burman; Ralph and Edith DeMars; John Kawaianiani McCandless, Sr.; Albertine Loomis; Lehua C. Conrad; Frank and Adele Sommerfeld; Charles Chu-Hing; Ohana o Kawaiaha o (Comprised of Redress Funds). We also owe a debt of gratitude to Kahu Curt Kekuna, and church office staff, who have provided invaluable spiritual, moral and administrative support to the scholarship committee over the years-- Gloria Kelly, Patti Igawa, Dean Yokotake, Lindsay Wahineokai, Shirley Peterson, Madeline Igawa and now Janet Tolentino and Kalei Balanon. Mahalo nui loa also to the many volunteers who have served on the Scholarship Committee over the years: Kerri-Ann Hewett Fraiser, Puanani Caindec, Ruby Donlin, Hilda Rogers, Maile Burgess, Char Izuka, Kaipo Kanahele, William Ha ole, Manu Nae ole, Eda Kāneakua, and Joel Leong. Current members of the committee are Puanani Caindec, Ruby Donlin, Sally Akaka Truong, Puakailima Davis, Monica Morris, and our Trustee chairperson, Claire Steele. Please feel free to approach any of us if you have questions, have suggestions, or are interested in making monetary donations to our scholarship fund. Foremost, we are grateful to our Lord, from whom all blessings flow. Monica Morris

Kupuna Korner Puanani Caindec The Kupuna Ministry met on September 17, 2010 to discuss the upcoming White Elephant Sale which is scheduled for November 27 in Ōpūkaha ia basement. We are asking members and friends to bring in their gently used clothing and other articles on November 22, 23, and 24th so they can be priced and sorted. Since Thursday is Thanksgiving, the kūpuna will not be working that day. All donations may be left in the hallway in the basement. Last June, through your generous support, the kūpuna grossed over $3,000 which went to the church for operations. We would like to thank everyone for their donations and kokua in setting up and providing items for that sale. This is a huge task which takes many hands to make it a success. This November, we will be accepting hard bound and paperback books, videos, DVDs (movies) and records for our book section. Last year magazines did not sell well so we are asking that they not be brought in this time. We will also have a bed and bath area set up in Pauahi. Kitchen items and knickknacks will also have a special place. The nursery will hold children s books, clothing and toys. Our big items are clothing and all types are welcome along with shoes, handbags and hats. Our special boutique carries high end items like crystal glasses and china, new or slightly used clothing, antiques, old books and the like. We are again asking that no large furniture items or electronic equipment be donated as they are difficult to handle. Remember that Sunday, November 28 is the half price sale day which begins when worship service ends and closes at 1pm. There are bargains galore so you don t want to miss this event. Remember that on Saturday, November 27, we will also have craft booths on the lawn. The Kūpuna Ministry is open to one and all. There are no age limits and ministry gathers once a month on the third Friday from 10am-12pm in the Ka ahumanu Room. Please join us as we share stories of days gone by. We are also working on completing our third set of kāhili. Hope you can join us.
