I sincerely hope that all of you have had a great Holiday season. I would like to thank you for the privilege and honor of serving as your President for I am looking forward to a very exciting year and hope you will all join me in making this year exciting and productive. Together we can accomplish all that we plan for and work towards growing our membership. I invite all of you to recruit at least one member. Bring them to our Installation luncheon to introduce them to our club. That is the best place to start. I d like to invite all of you to come out to the meetings, bring your musical instruments. We will kanikapila for the first few minutes of our meetings. We will provide you with words to our favorite Hawaiian Songs. We will be doing some community service with Loko Ea Fish Pond in Haleiwa and Maunalua Bay this year. You will be hearing shortly about our Ho`olako Project that we will offer our club to participate in this year. I am looking for a volunteer to be the Chaplain for our club. 3 HAWAII YOURH OPERA CHORUS Pearl Harbor Hawaiian Civic Club helped the Hawaii Youth Opera Chorus last night at Kawaiaha`o church by providing ushers for their Christmas Concert. Their season theme Nalu Hou reminds us that HYOC fosters the next wave in Hawai`i s community leaders by encouraging the personal and social growth of its members. Self esteem, leadership, teamwork and personal responsibility are all benefits of HYOC participation. These life skills serve our students well as they navigate their way through life. The his is the HYOC s 52nd Season of Making Music. Ho`omaika`i! Nola! Ushering for this beautiful concert were: Moana Sanders Ka`iulani Hess Puakailima Davis Toni Lee Charles Kapua. 3
4 Donovan Nacapuy, son of Cheryl Kapua and Ronnie Nacapuy sang in the concert. Nola Nahulu is the Artistic Director of the Hawai`ì Youth Opera Chorus. Representing Pearl Harbor was Ilima Dela Cruz, Charles Kapua represented the Oahu Council and Toni Lee represented the Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs. 5 Nola Nahulu led the Choir. The Kanahele Ohana; Kaipo, Karen, Mana and Kahi lit the Advent Candle of Peace. Kaipo led the congregation with the prayer of Invocation and the Lord's Prayer and Caren did the Blessing of Our Gifts and Offering. Pearl Harbor Hawaiian Civic Club traditionally ushers for the Kawaiolaonapukanileo January Concert every year that is held at the Orvis Theater at the University of Hawaiì. Ä Lei of Stars music of the Hapa Haole Era was held Sunday, January 13, It was a very enjoyable concert. Our own Kaleiaina Lee is a bass in this group and of course Nola is the Director. Attending the concert was Kimberly Wong, Moana Sanders, Charlie Kapua and Toni Lee. Moana, Charlie and Toni were ushers at the concert all dressed up in our club uniform. This was our first community service activity starting 2013 with a very enjoyable event. 5

7 OAHU COUNCIL VOTES TO SUPPORT CONFIRMATIONS OF JOBIE MASAGATANI AND ANNELLE AMARAL The Oahu Council vote at their first meeting of the year to support Jobie Masagatani in her confirmation that will be coming up at this Legislature at their first Council Meeting of the year. The motion was made by Waianae Hawaiian Civic Club where their permanent member moved to support Jobie as Director of Hawaiian Homes. The motion was passed with three kanalua votes. The Oahu Council voted unanimously to support the confirmation of Annelle Amaral to the position on the Parole Board. Governor Neil Abercrombie appointed Annelle to be on the Parole Board Board in December. PRINCE JONAH KUHIO KALANIANA`OLE CELEBRATION MARCH 13 - Native Hawaiian Day, State Capitol (a day of exhibits of various Native Hawaiian Organizations) Pearl Harbor has traditionally had a table of arts and crafts and information about a club in the past. MARCH 16 - ADA WALK: Ho`oikaika Kino: The power of Moms and Dads in influencing the diet and exercise of their children to avoid obesity. This is in partnership with the American Diabetes Association. Pearl Harbor has also entered a team for this event in the past. MARCH 23 - Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalaniana`ole Commemorative Parade 10:00 a.m. in Waikiki from Kalakaua Avenue and Olohana Street. Parade narrations will occur at Saratoga/Kalakaua Avlenue, Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center, Outrigger Waikiki and 7
8 the Hula Mound location on Waikiki Beach. Parade ends at Kapi`olani Park. Senator Daniel K. Akaka will be the Grand Marshall of the Parade. Princess Abigail Kawananakoa will be invited to take part in the parade. (The council did not feel that it be appropriate for her to be the Pa`u Queen since there was going to be only four horses in the unit. It was suggested that she just be invited to be the parade. HO`IKE`IKE Will be held at Kapi`olani Park after the parade. There will be food booths, craft booths and entertainment held in the park. KE AHE LAU MAKANI, HAWAIIAN CHORAL FESTIVAL Will be held at Kawaiaha`o Church Festival Rehearsal from 2:00 to 5:00 p,m. Tea on the Lawn from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. Prince Kuhio Choral Concert from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. featuring the Royal Hawaiian Band and the debut of New Composition by Aaron Mahi and a new Lili`uokalani arrangement of justin Ka`upu HONGWANJI LIVING TREASURE Our very own Nola Nahulu will be honored this year as a living treasure by the Hongwanji. She will be honored along with: Oswald Stender, Michael Nakasone, Denise Kauahi and Gary Washburn. It would be great to support Nola at this auspicious luncheon. Early bird tickets can be purchased for $70 if purchased by January 25. Otherwise tickets will be $80 per person. The Luncheon will be held at the Sheraton Waikiki hotel. 9 ANNUAL LUNALILO HOME BENEFIT LU`AU Lunalilo Home will be celebrating it s 178th Birthday of King William Charles Lunalilo and 130 years of Lunalilo Home providing care for our Kupuna. In their annual tradition, Lunalilo Home will host a Lu`au featuring `ono food, nahenahe music, beautiful hula, and a relaxing time with family and friends! Each year Lunalilo Home look to the future and give thanks for the past generosity of our benefactor, King William Charles Lunalilo, their friends and supporters who help fulfill the mission of providing programs and services to our Kupuna. Our continued support, generosity and kokua are especially welcomed with a mahalo nui, and will help assure that they will be able to provide for the kupuna throughout the coming year, and into the future. Na kakou apau ke kuleana e malama I ko kakou mau kupuna. It is all of our responsibility to care for our elders. The Lu`au will be held on Saturday, January 26, 2013 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Tickets are $50.00 per person.
