Aloha From The Kahu loha e Nā Hoahānau, Do you remember the uncertainty and fear that gripped America as we geared up for Y2K 10 years ago? Rumors of computers collapsing causing financial collapse and social collapse filled the news. Well, our worse fears weren t realized and in spite of the current economic downturn, most seem okay. In This Issue Aloha from the Kahu 1 Stevedore to Friar Tuck 2 From Kawaiaha o to Stanford 3 Saint Damien/Live, Love, Laugh 4 Kūpuna Visits 5 Sunday School Sunday/Kea au 6 Thanksgiving Announcements 7 Kūpuna Korner 8 Luka mokuna 2, paukū Mai makau oukou, no ka mea, eia hoi, ke hai aku nei au ia oukou i ka mea maikai, e olioli nui ai e lilo ana no na kanaka a pau. 11 No ka mea, i keia la i hanau ai, ma ke kulanakauhale o Davida, he Ola no oukou, oia ka Mesia ka Haku. Luke 2: Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. 11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord. Jesus told us of the signs that would signal the end of our world, but at the same time assured us He was in charge. If so, what then do we need to fear? If the King of kings, the Lord of hosts, the Savior tells us He s got our back, why fear? Maybe it s because we really don t know Our Risen Lord. In talking to some, I m surprised to discover some may talk about Jesus as Lord, but they don t understand that means He has already gone to prepare a place for us with Him. They are still trying to earn their way to heaven. Get to know Him. Or maybe it s because they don t trust what Ke Akua said. He loved us so much He sent His Son to die for us that we might have eternal life. Friends, we either trust He s sacrificed His Son to give us eternal life or we don t. If we trust Him, we live accordingly. If we don t trust Him, we live in fear. You choose. During Advent season, we prepare to celebrate the birth of Our Lord Jesus who 2,000 years ago allowed us to know and trust Him not only through scriptures, but through daily contact. We have firsthand accounts of His childhood, words and actions that validate who He was, is and will be. We don t celebrate His birth as a past event. We celebrate His birth as an even greater event that someday we will be with Him forever. Because of His birth, may Christmas 2009 not be characterized with fear or uncertainty as it may have been 10 years ago, but may it be your celebration of our forever with Ke Akua. Blessings, Kahu Curt ~ Mission Statement ~ Kawaiaha o Church honors and affirms Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. Through God s word expressed through worship, education, and mission, we will equip God s disciples unto faithfulness and fruitfulness. We will clearly represent Jesus Christ to others and perpetuate our Hawaiian cultural heritage. Adopted April 2007

During my early childhood, I had the most fun of my life. However, by the time I was fifteen years old, fun time became hard times. My father died in 1934, leaving my mother to care for ten children. It was also hard times because we suffered from the worst depression of the United States, which took place in the early 1930 s. As a result of hard times, I was expelled from Hilo High School, because I couldn t pay the dollar-a-month tuition which Hawai i s Legislature had temporarily placed upon all public high school students. Luckily, I was offered a job as a dollar a day assistant to the janitor of Haili Church. When the full time janitor left for Honolulu, I took over the job as a full time janitor of Haili Church. Going to school and working was not easy, but I grinned and beared it, because I wanted to earn money to help my family. After graduation from Hilo High School in June, 1938, I took a job as janitor of Hanapēpē Armory on Kaua i. The job was easy, but life was gloomy. I was lonely and easily discouraged. Alice Pauole entered my life and I married her on May 3, In mid-january we moved to Hilo, and I took a job as a stevedore. We had to load ships with sugar bags, which weighed 100 lbs. each, for ten to twelve hours a day. Stevedores also had to unload cargo from ships who docked at Hilo s wharf. During the nine years ( ) that I was a stevedore, I had three experiences in which I nearly lost my life. The third experience was the escape from the April 1, 1946 tsunami where over a hundred people in Hawai i lost their lives. At least five destructive ocean waves destroyed much of the town of Hilo, including the dock warehouse whose rafters I climbed to escape the destructive tsunami waves. While on the rafters, I heard a mysterious voice which I assumed was God speaking to me. The voice said: The tidal wave will not get you. I believed the voice, Stevedore to Friar Tuck climbed down from the rafters, went outside of the warehouse and dove into the ocean. It was filled with floating cargo and parts of the warehouse. I swam to a ship drifting helplessly and climbed its ladder to safety just as the next wave tore the ladder off. Due to these escapes from death, I was convinced that God was challenging or daring me to change my life from being a stevedore to serve Him as a Christian minister. Moving from Hawai i to the mainland was expensive. It was not until 1951 that an Executive of the Hawai i Conference of United Church of Christ (HCUCC) assured me that the HCUCC would help me finance that expensive trip for my family and I. As a result, in 1955 I graduated, cum laude from Yankton College in South Dakota. I enrolled and graduated from Andover Newton Theological School in Massachusetts in 1958 earning my divinity degree. On June 8, 1958, I was ordained a minister of the HCUCC. On June 16, 1958, Alice and I were commissioned as missionaries of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Mission (ABCFM). In mid-august, 1958, Alice, our daughter Noelani and I went to Micronesia as missionaries of the ABCFM. After a year in Micronesia, Noelani returned to Hawai i and enrolled as a boarding student at the Kamehameha School for Girls. For nine years, Alice and I lived in Micronesia as missionaries. We acclimated ourselves to the simple life of the natives. We were thankful that we could be of service to the people and students who came from the districts of Truk, Marshall Islands, Kusaie and Palau to attend the mission schools on Ponape. While there, both Alice and I learned to relate with the simple, poor and troubled people like a caring friend. In 1967, we said Kaselelie to our Micronesian family and returned to Hawai i. In 1968, I served for a year as interim Kahu for Imiola Church in Waimea, Hawai i. Then from I served as an assistant (Kahu Hope) to Kahu Abraham Akaka s 800 member Kawaiaha o Church. Alice went home to be with her Lord on May 3, At her service, Rev. Chester Terpstra, a missionary colleague honored her with these words, amidst a strange culture, a foreign language and a distant land, she established a warm and loving home for young men and women who were welcomed and loved. This was her greatest sense of selffulfillment. Kahu Kalei Tuck Wah Lee With the three children grown up, I felt a very personal need for self-realization. I would not leave the ministry but just letting God s will be done in my life. In April 1974, I submitted my letter of resignation to Kahu Akaka. After much thought and searching for the will of God for me personally, I came to the conclusion that I must take a step of faith, which is necessary if God is to use me as He wills. No plans for the future, no inquiries about positions, only a personal step of faith not knowing what I would do or where I would serve, letting God take care of my destiny. Kawaiaha o Church accepted my resignation with deepest aloha, letting another chapter of my story be written on faith. June 1974, I became the minister of Wai anae Protestant Church. From meager living conditions and a small salary I got sick eating food which had been stored in a faulty working refrigerator. Patricia Jelletich, a public school teacher who lived near by, noticed that I did not leave my cottage for three days and came to investigate. I was rushed to the hospital where the spoiled food was pumped out of me. She took care of me as I recuperated. As the result of her concern and my love for her, we were married on December 20, 1974 in Wai anae Protestant Church. God wanted me to have a worthy life-partner in Patricia, as I served Wai anae for one year. Pat and I moved to Moloka i in May 1975 and I served at Moloka i s yoke parishes of Ho olehua and Kala iakamanu Hou Churches until June We returned to O ahu to work full time with folks at Kapālama and also with the prisoners and parolees in the Honolulu Community Correctional Center who lived in the wider community and the homeless at Waimānalo. I was invited to work at two large churches. I chose to work with Central Union Church serving on the staff working on poverty for four years. In June 1988, Pat and I moved back to Hilo and became an interim minister for Kalapana- Maunakea Church from The full circle came to an end when I served as Kahu at Haili Church from , the church where I first worked as its janitor from Poor health has limited my ability to minister to others. I am now focusing on writing as a way of being useful to God and my fellowman. As a legacy to my children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and close friends of mine and Pat, I plan to print 300 copies of Challenged to Change, From Stevedore to Christian Minis-

My first memories of Kawaiaha o Church are attending Sunday service with my grandparents when I was young and still lived in California. I remember the warm and welcoming atmosphere and of course the friendly people. The Church has played a large role in not only my life, but in the lives of my whole family. My Tūtū Pa, Abraham Akaka, was Kahu at Kawaiaha o Church for many years, his brother, Daniel Akaka, was choral director, and my mother and brother are currently in the choir. Kawaiaha o Church has seen me through most of the Christmas Eves, Thanksgivings, and Easters of my life. It was the site of my high school Baccalaureate and of the funerals of my Tūtū Pa and Tūtū Ma. From seeing family and friends, to meeting new people every week, the Church has really felt like a second home. I feel extremely blessed to be a part of this Church, and I cherished every time I would come home from college and could attend service. I attended Stanford University starting September 2005 and graduated this past June. The scholarships and outreach that Kawaiaha o Church provided helped make this experience possible and reduced the stresses that come with attending college. Life at Stanford was hectic and definitely never dull. Between classes with hundreds of pages of reading and extracurricular activities and on-campus jobs, which seemed to take up more time than classes, From Kawaiaha o o to Stanford I always tried to keep myself busy and explore what Stanford had to offer. By my Junior year, I had really found my niche in the business fraternity and in non-profit consulting on campus. I made some of my closest friends through these activities, and I also got to do a lot of good work. My non-profit consulting projects included working with the YMCA and Special Olympics of Northern California, which was very rewarding. The business fraternity was not only a great experience for me to learn business skills, but it was also a way for me to give back and teach others what I had learned. Through the fraternity, I also made lifelong friends with whom I can always lean on for support. Following graduation this past June, I spent about a month searching for jobs. Although I did not know exactly what type of job I wanted, I knew I wanted to do something that was both challenging and rewarding. With the Daniel Truong economy being weak, good jobs were hard to come by, so I decided to take some time off to relax and travel until the fall in hopes that the economy would improve. I was able to travel to South Korea, Australia, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, and Orlando throughout this period of time. These experiences were so much fun, and I am extremely glad I decided to take some time off. I have recently been studying for the GMAT with hopes of attending business school in the near future, and I have been applying to several jobs both in Hawai i and in California. It has been difficult to not only contemplate the kind of work I want to do, but also balance that with where I am willing to live. The job search process has been a long and lifechanging experience starting last winter where I really had no idea what I wanted to do, to today where I know I want to do work where I am constantly learning and doing something positive for the community. I very recently interviewed and accepted a position within the Hawai i State Senate to be a Budget Analyst for the upcoming legislative session. I thank God so much for this wonderful opportunity and for the journey He took me through to get to where I am today. I want to thank Kawaiaha o Church and the congregation for all of their unwavering support and aloha through the years, and I look forward to being a part of the Church again now that I am home.

Tribute to Saint Damien Ardis Gomes Hālau Hula O Kawaiaha o had the opportunity to pay tribute to Saint Damien during a public celebration on Sunday, November 1 at Iolani Palace. After a service at Our Lady of Peace Cathedral where Saint Damien was ordained in the 1800 s, his relic was brought onto the palace grounds in a long procession which included the Royal Order of Kamehameha I, the Royal Guard and members of the Hawaiian societies. As we waited patiently, we heard a number of speeches of a courageous man s compassionate service to the residence of Kalaupapa, Moloka i. The Rev. Dr. Charles Buck, our Hawai i Confer- ence minister of the UCC, said it so well, In honoring one man, we also honor the thousands of people patients and workers who, despite disease and despair, reached out to one another in love and compassion. Monica Morris, one of our hālau members shared that her grandfather, Alfred Ho opi i died in Kalaupapa at the young age of 24. Monica s mother was only 2 when she had to say goodbye to her father. Her grandmother wanted to join her husband in Kalaupapa, but had to remain here in Honolulu to take care of Monica s mother. Her grandparents met as teenagers and were married at Our Lady of Peace Cathedral, where Saint Damien's relic is interred. The chant, Mele Halelū No Iehova that the hālau performed was appropriate for such an event. We spread God s word and love to all who were there and let them know that from heaven, God will save us and bring us victory. He did it for Saint Damien and the people of Kalaupapa and he will do the same for us. It truly was an honor to participate in a celebration of Hawaii s first Saint. Live, Love, Laugh Women s Conference Quotes from some of the attendees: Faye Wong, Patti Igawa, Vickia Koutroupas, Maddy Igawa, Healani Waiau, Danna Lyman, Kanani Kawika, Moana Sanders, Dottie Suiso and Becky Kekuna. What an awesome way to spend a weekend with wonderful women who all have hearts for Jesus. It was a place where we could rest, study, share and learn. We started out with a real comedic treat by Anita Renfroe, a Christian Comedian whose humorous insights into womanhood and motherhood are nationally known. Her heart-felt inspirational messages via song, were particularly moving. She is a gifted musician and humorist. Her comedy show was so true to the life cycle of a woman. We all go through so many changes and it s okay. I ve never heard it in a light and comical way, but I truly enjoyed knowing that we can laugh at our growth into mature womanhood with our husband, children and ourselves. Some women attended Kathy Slamp s workshop The Church Office: Ministry or Madness. One of the comments was the Church Office is definitely a MINISTRY. The people who work there should always have the attitude and character traits as written in I Corinthians 12:14-13:13. Jan Johnson was a woman of very deep faith with unique gifts and a great speaker. Her session on Enjoying God s Presence All Day Long helped us develop exercises that helped us conceptualize God and His presence in our lives in new and wonderful ways. From Jan s session I learned to always be in God s presence and to never allow anyone to take you from it. She shared so much information on how God is in our presence. We just have to be still. We went outside with the spectacular setting at the base of the Ko olau s where Ke Akua s breathtaking beauty was a constant reminder of His Greatness! Only He could create all the beauty around us and all the colors, smells and textures. We learned the technique of Breath Prayer- Lord let me see his/her heart when facing someone and when life s stresses are overwhelming. Breath prayers are short and come from the gut; Lord, give me peace. These breath prayers have already helped me! By blending prayer and work together we can do the connecting, God will do the perfecting. It was spiritually refreshing to spend Halloween at a Christian conference instead of other places. Attending this conference renewed my relationship with the Lord and helped me to remember that if He is the shepherd, and I am the sheep, when I get lost He will always carry me home joyfully on His shoulders!

Hale Ho Aloha On Saturday, October 10, the Hale Ho Aloha Care Home nestled in the Pacific Heights was alive with song and dance sponsored by the Women of Kawaiaha o. Featured voices include Hawea Waia u, son, Kaina, and newcomer Nalani, along with members of the Hālau Hula o Kawaiaha o, Char Izuka, Lisa Caires, Corrie Young, and youth Dez Caires, Jazzlyn Young, and Danielle Au. Keiko Denbeau and Martha Albin led the residents with an all time favorite, Jesus Loves Me. Songs were interspersed with dances. One of Hawea s favorites was Kahana. The hula which were so gracefully performed were He Waiwai Nui, Ho oheno Keia No Beauty, Jewel, and In Christ Alone. Climaxing our time together was a sing-along featuring oldies, like I ll Be Lovin You and Always. Some of the residents sang along with us with such joy on their face that truly moved us. What better way to brighten the day of residents of a Care Home than to bring them a time of song and dance. The Women of Kawaiaha o would like to say mahalo nui loa to our hula sisters and the Waia u family for joining us to make this a memorable morning of fellowship. Above all, we noted God s presence on this special day. Martha Albin Lunalilo Home Becky Kekuna On a misty Saturday morning, the Women of Kawaiaha o, other members and the Hālau Hula o Kawaiaha o, visited our kūpuna at Lunalilo Home on November 14, We were able to deliver many gifts from members who made and donated items from the Lunalilo Wish List. With a warm welcome, Mama Kahu shared some verses from Psalms. Kaina and his mother Hawea, with their melodic voices, sang many Hawaiian songs of old that were very inspirational. The Hālau shared a special number called Lei Ho oheno, which is a song that was written by Kanani Kahaunaele of a dear friend that is likened to a lei that adorns the shoulders, so sweet to smell and beautiful to look at. The Beauty Hula is as the heavens cries, life is given to the land and to the flowers that are beautiful and cherished, just like our kūpuna at Lunalilo Home. Makenzie did a solo performance taking our kūpuna to Ha ena, Kaua i where the hala grows at Naue by the sea called Nā Hala O Naue. The last dance was Ho ololi Ia u, O Ke Akua which is Change My Heart, O God. It s a praise song that asks God to change our hearts that we may be more like Him. We all sang Nū Oli to end our special time. We visited afterwards and from their smiles, we know we brought some sunshine into these special ones lives. Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God. II Corinthians 1:3-4

Fall Sunday School Sunday Leona-Clare Kakalia On October 25, 2009, the Christian Education Ministry held their Fall Sunday School Sunday & Birthday Sunday event in the Kawaiaha o gym. The children sang Christian songs lead by Corrie Young with Darren Almeida strumming away on his guitar. The children were divided up into two groups for relay games. It was total concentration for the children to hold a wooden spoon with a small ball on the spoon without dropping the ball to the ground. There were several crafts the children made, Moses & the Ten Commandments- Make a Bible Story Stickers, Foam Christian Pumpkin Kit and Fabulous foam shine with The Light of Jesus self-adhesive shapes. We all gathered together to sing Happy Birthday and enjoyed good food. Thanksgiving Meal for Kea au Arminta Nishimura Praise God from whom all blessings flow This past month of November, we, the Outreach Ministry prepared a Thanksgiving lunch with all the trimmings of turkey, stuffing, corn, cranberry sauce, rice and pumpkin crunch for 120 friends out at Kea au Beach Park.
