2 MCHS MEMBER OF THE MONTH GLORIA MOORE This month our featured member of the month is Gloria Moore. Clarksville has been home for Gloria for seven years. After arriving in Clarksville, Gloria transferred her memberships to comparable organizations, and that is when she joined the Montgomery Historical Society as a life-time member. She also is a member of Maury County Historical Society and Wayne County Historical Society. Gloria Moore Christmas Diner 2015 Life began for Gloria in Columbus, Georgia. As a young child, she was seen playing on the big kids playground equipment rather than the appropriate sized smaller equipment. When Gloria was 2 1/2 years old. the Moore family moved to Wayne County, Tennessee near where her father had grown up. She attended Frank Hughes School in Clifton, Tennessee where she played basketball and participated in many clubs and helped with many activities at the school. Gloria was the third generation in her family to attend Middle Tennessee State University where she majored in elementary education. One of her greatest treasures is a textbooks from Middle Tennessee State University from summer, 1916 which belonged to her grandmother when she was a student at the Normal School. After graduation from Middle Tennessee State University, Gloria settled in Columbia, Tennessee, where she taught in four elementary schools. Two of those schools were new schools, and she treasures the experience of setting policies and procedures for those new schools. Gloria retired from the Maury County Schools with thirtythree years of service. After retiring from teaching in the public schools, Gloria worked with student teachers from Middle Tennessee State University. Gloria has always participated in educational, civic, charitable and religious activities. She was a charter member of three of the organizations she served Ephraim McLean Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution which is named for her 7th g-grandfather, the Natchez Trace Reading Association and the Beta Alpha Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa honorary Teacher Sorority. Gloria`s address contains three b`s which stand for books, bridge and basketball. Bridge occupies much of Gloria`s time. playing both party and duplicate games. Bridge tournaments are a real treat for her. In addition to bridge, she collects cookbooks, dust, and continues to add to her extensive list of unusual names. If you attend some of the scheduled meetings, you should be able to meet Gloria there. She is a regular attendee. Descendants of Maj. George Marable Continued from Feb. 5 WINDOW INTO THE PAST by Sandra J Stacey Clarksville Weekly Chronicle Killed - Last Tuesday a negro woman named Fanny McFadden was killed by the falling of one of the walls of Brockman & Porter s old warehouses near the wharf. She had stopped to speak to one of the workmen who were engaged in tearing it down and unexpectedly the wall gave way, falling on and killing her almost Instantly. What would you find if you looked in the window into the past in March Clarksville Weekly Chronicle, 19 Mar 1858, Fri. Page 3 That portion of our beautiful city, situated on Charlotte street, is, (or will be when Charlotte Road is piked,) one of the most desirable parts of the city. It is a quiet little nook to itself, very healthy, and contains a clever set of neighbors. When the improvements contemplated are made, we expect to see retired merchants and others seeking suburban residences in that locality. Clarksville Weekly Chronicle, 4 Mar 1859, Fri. Page 3 On Monday morning last, Franklin Street from the Post Office, to the National Hotel, was crowded with wagons, so that it was impossible to pass, even on horseback. Such an evidence of the increase in the Grocery trade we have not seen in a long while. Every wagon was being loaded with all kinds of Groceries. There are several new establishments just commencing that business, which seems, even to make the demand still greater. We shall soon have a town as is a town. Clarksville Weekly Chronicle, 11 Mar 1859, Fri Page 3 About noon, on Wednesday, three Irishmen decoyed an Irish peddler to the rear of Mr. Bringhurst's Carriage shop and layed violent hands upon him, as supposed, for the purpose of robbing him. A policeman, whose suspicions were aroused by the manner of the three Irishmen, previous to the assault, watched their movements, and was on hand as soon as the peddler was knocked down, and arrested the three worthies who are now in jail. Truly, the democratic, is a persecuted party, as a speaker lately remarked, in a Northern State, and workhouses, jails, penitentiaries, and gibbets attest it. Clarksville Weekly Chronicle, 18 Mar 1859, Fri. Page 3 For the last two months our town has been visited by every description of shows and concerts scarcely a night passing without some kind amusement being offered.' 'We are glad of this, and hope it will "keep on," for, like Mark Tapley, we love to be jolly, when we can. We have had Theatre's, Operas, Negro Minstrels, and the like in doors, and Organ-grinders, tambourines and triangles, out doors. And to-night and to-morrow night we are to have Peel's Original, unrivalled and inimitable Campbell Minstrels. Let every one turn out who wishes to enjoy a hearty laugh Clarksville Weekly Chronicle, 9 Mar 1860, Fri Page 3 A short time since we found in the Louisville Journal, an advertisement, signed Wm. Y. Worthington, Clarksville, Tenn., expressing all earnest desire to get a wife,- a desire he sought to accomplish by giving the public notice that "Barkis was willing." We now clip from the Cincinnati Commercial the following advertisement, setting forth that Mr. Charles H. Winters is also seeking a matrimonial alliance : WANTED. WIFE by a young man of 22 years of age, a wife between the age of 17 and 21. The advertiser is neither rich nor poor, erudite or ignorant ; is in good busiest., and has no reason to suppose bet that a fair financial future is before him. Is chiefly led to this mode of trying to find a partner for life by a lack of conversational powers, mislay from bashfulness on first acquaintance, and a failure on his part to see anything wrong la thus advertising. Address CHARLES 11. WINTERS, Box 483 Clarksville, Tenn. From Mr., Winters own statement it will be seen that he is only a tolerable sort of a feller; he ain t the whole hog on any point, but a kind or half- way man. He may, after all, though, be a perfect bore - but that has got to be so common that it can mildly be considered hogish. Of course Messrs. Worthington and Winters, both, think that their enquiry for a wife will set all the eligible young ladies in the country on the qui rive as to who they are, and which of them shall be fortunate enough to fill the bill. We would recommend all hard-run women to open personal negotiations at once with the delectable advertisers -if they can be found. Clarksville Weekly Chronicle 21 Mar 1874, Sat. Page 3 A LETTER FROM WOODLAWN. DEAR CHRONICLE: Permit me to give you a few items from this section of country. though I fear to the general reader they will be of little interest. For the past few months the roads have been so intolerable that we could seek news but seldom out of our own little town. As was remarked by one, a few days since, this portion of old Montgomery is easily bounded, to-wit: North by mud and water ; east by water and mud ; south by mud-puddle and water; west by pud-muddle and mud. The Dover road has been almost impassable most of the recent traveling being done on the new cut road, which lies about three feet under the old one. We are thankful, however, that the last few days of sunshine are rapidly drying the roads, and hope to see them soon in good traveling order. Not-withstanding bad roads and almost incessant rains, our little village has triumphantly passed the winter through, and as spring bursts upon us with such fair promise we welcome it with grate-ful hearts, determining in her bright and beautiful days to reclaim the time that winter stole. As to our little burg, she has not only stood the test of winter, but I am more than happy to note the several improvements now under way. The dairy business, with Wood, Chilton A CO at its head, bids fair to be a success, some of our most enterprising farmers taking liberal stock. The enterprise will claim greater attention so soon as spring fairly opens. Mr. J. Kennerly, formerly a citizen of Stewart county has purchased the Brandon property here and is rapidly preparing to put up manufactured tobacco. He will put up the best brands and sell at Grange prices. Here I am reminded that the Grangers are preparing to build them a nice hall over the M. E. Church at this place. This they are doing by private subscription, preferring to keep the funds of the Grange for other purposes. The Grange here was organized on the 23rd day of January last with thirty charter members. They now number seventy. Both officers and members are taking the greatest inter-est in it. hoping and believing that great good may be the result. If it is not telling tales out of school, I will state that there was considerable excitement occasioned in the Grange at our last meeting, caused by a resolu-tion, offered by brother D., to the effect that no more chickens be killed for Grange purposes until after August the 1st; stating as his reasons that the preachers were terribly dissatisfied, and really grumbling at it. This caused considerable discussion, but was finally adopted, with the amendment that the time for killing be extended until the "preachers leave for conference.- This seemed to be perfectly satisfactory to the members. So may it be to the preachers. In conclusion dear CHRONICLE, let me say to-morrow is your day here (a welcome visitor.) May you be filled with your usual sound doctrine and pleasing information. Yours truly Amicus Woodlawn, Tenn March 13 Clarksville Weekly Chronicle, Mar 1875, Sat. Page 3 It must be unpleasant, for a stuttering man in Berlin to hail a street car, because there they call a street car a Pferdestrasseneisenbahnwagen short. Clarksville Weekly Chronicle, 13 Mar 1875, Sat. Page 3 Mr. B. 0. Keesee's building, next to Scott's private boarding house, has been pronounced unsuitable for a cotton factory, and now Mr. K. proposes to convert it into a merchants mill. If we cannot have the factory let us have the mill it will prove to be a great convenience to the public. Clarksville Weekly Chronicle, 20 Mar 1875, Sat. Page 3 One of the hardest lessons to instill into the generation of young men, is the dignity of labor. They seem to think that loafing around bar-rooms, is a mark of honorable independence, and that no one can be a gentleman who soils his hands in pursuit of any useful vocation. This sentiment is a curse to the South, and the ruin of many who pride themselves upon being gentlemen of leisure. "window into the past is closed. 5
