Our Spring Outing will begin with an 11am chicken plate BBQ (tickets $15 in advance) at Mt. Carmel, about 15 miles South on US 41-A toward Exit 19 of I-24. Look for the Gov. Willie Blount Historic Highway Marker, and turn left; Mt. Carmel is just around the corner! At noon, Rev. Dr. Von Unruh, the Tennessee Conference United Methodist Historian and Archivist will give a talk in the historic sanctuary of Mt. Carmel. He has transcribed and made extensive annotations to the five-volume set of diaries of Rev. J. W. Cullom, and the first of three projected volumes should be available to purchase at this event on 18 June. Warm Hearts and Saddlebags was the title of the abbreviated version published many years ago, that is now out of print; but this is the FULL transcription containing many more details and persons names. Dr. Unruh has meticulously researched each named person, and gives many interesting footnotes that will be of interest to historians and researchers for ages to come! He has added maps and pictures of persons and places where available. Both Sango United Methodist and Mt. Carmel United Methodist have members who descend from Rev. Cullom, who was assigned to the eleven-church circuit in 1866, after serving in the Confederacy. Twice assigned to Asbury Circuit in East Montgomery/West Cheatham; he was later assigned to the Montgomery Circuit around Dotsonville; and still later at the Sango church. Rev. Cullom mentions many Montgomery Countians, both in the County and the City of Clarksville. Rev. Dr. Unruh has carefully identified and located the farms of many of those named. These volumes of Warm Hearts and Saddlebags will provide many evenings of interesting reading. Get your lunch tickets in advance from President Kurt Bryant, kurt.bryant@gmail.com, John Head, or Cleo Hogan, (leave a message for a return call). 1

Clarksville Weekly Chronicle 19 Jun 1869, Sat P. 3 CAPTURED On Monday last the Police arrested one of the bacon stealers who have been operating here recently. He goes by the name of Charley Woodford, and is of the colored persuasion. They also succeeded in recovering a lot of bacon and cigars which had been stolen and sold. Clarksville Weekly Chronicle 26 Jun 1869, Sat Page 3 PIC-NIC AND BRAN-DANCE The young men of Mr. D. C. Landon's neighborhood will give a Pic-nic and bran-dance at Hunter's Spring today. We thank the managers for their kind invitation, but business prevents our attendance. Clarksville Weekly Chronicle 4 Jun 1870, Sat P. 3 We are authorized by the proprietors of the Skating Rink to request the ladies and gentlemen to appear at the Rink, on Thursday evening the 9th inst., in fancy costume. This is a weekly feature In City Rinks, generally, and must add greatly to the fascinations of an amusement now so popular. It gives, too, a wide scope to the play of fancy and taste, and is just as appropriate as fancy balls the only difference being that, at the ball they go it on the "light fantastic toe," while at the rink they go it flat-footed, or heel and toe. A band of music will be on hand. Clarksville Weekly Chronicle 11 Jun Sat P.3 The census-taker will soon be going around asking all sorts of questions, and the ladies are advised to get their ages ready. Clarksville Weekly Chronicle 18 Jun 1870, Sat P.3 Mr. Frank Hamilton proposes to number the business and private houses in the city, for twenty-five cents each, in good style. Most of the business men have engaged him and we hope all will do so. It will add to the appearance of our city, besides being very convenient. Clarksville Weekly Chronicle 18 Jun Sat P. 3 A Thing Of Beauty. We stepped in at Baker & Bro's Carriage and Buggy manufactory, a few days since, and saw, among a lot of very fine work, a buggy just completed for Mr. Thomas Beasley, the fat man, who is said to as clever as he is large. The finishing touches of the master-work-man, had just been given this elegant turn-out, every part of which shows the handy-work of skillful artisans in the different departments of the manufacture of pleasure vehicles. This homemade specimen was gotten up by Messrs. Baker & Bro., proficient in their line, and who are, beside being good workmen, citizens of whom we are proud. We trust they may meet with sufficient encouragement to make theirs a permanent institution in our city. "WindoW into the past is closed. 4
