1 SM September 2014 Welcome To Our Interim Rector During the service on Sunday, July 27th, Reverend Meredyth invited the children up to the sanctuary to observe close up preparations for the Eucharist. Following the service an Italian Sunday dinner was enjoyed by a large number of parishioners. It was also an opportunity to meet the Reverend Meredyth Ward interim rector. With red and white tablecloths to set the mood, we enjoyed caprice salad, bruschetta, lasagna, meatballs, vegetables and garlic bread. The finally was espresso, lemon gelato, biscotti, and homemade cannoli. A huge thank you to the entire Motta family for the preparation of this fabulous meal!

Meredyth on the first Sunday of the month at the common behind city hall. This is an ecumenical group of Worcester area churches that provide bag lunches, items such as hats, gloves, and scarfs in the winter and socks, baseball caps, and, bottled water for the homeless, as well as, an ecumenical church service. One or more parishioners have accompanied Rev. Meredyth since last February. Lunches and clothing items are distributed before the service so there is no pressure for those who come to participate in the service. This is a small but significant way we can outreach to the Worcester community. There is a box in the narthex to collect the clothing items, (cash could also be donated to purchase items). A sign up sheet is also in the Narthex for anyone who would like to go with Rev. Meredyth. We would love to have two or three people going with her each month. This is a very small commitment as its only one to two hours on the first Sunday of the month following our 10am service. Having gone with Rev. Meredyth in February, I can say this is a very rewarding experience. We thought we had too many hats and gloves, as we had over 75 items collected at church, but they were soon gone. Although most of the homeless that come are adult men, there were women and children as well. It was a chilly February day and a cold rain started close to the end of the service. On the way to my car, Mary and I reflected on how fortunate we were to get into my car and turn on the heat, and go home to warm houses. Please consider joining us in this small way of helping our community. 3 Dear Fellow Parishioners, We hope that this summer was as wonderful for you as it was for us. We have, over the summer, welcomed a new interim rector, and she has in turn given us some wonderful ideas to implement. She plans to host a children s homily once a month, and we have planned to have the children s backpacks blessed for the start of the school year on September 7th, which is also the first day of Sunday school. We can t wait to welcome all the children back, and look forward to another fun filled year of learning. As a reminder, Sunday School starts promptly at 9:45. Any arrival after that time is disruptive to the class, please try to be on time. A special note about Saint Michael s Day, we will once again host a bounce house for the children, along with some other games and activities. It is sure to be family fun unleashed! We also wanted to take time to offer out condolences to the Galvin and Motta families. They are in our thoughts and prayers, with hugs too. We love you all. Please look to The Light each month as a reminder of the events that we are coordinating for your enjoyment, and lets usher fall in with happy, full hearts. Erin Baril for the Family Fellowship Committee. Family Fellowship Saint Michael s Country Fair St. Michael s Country Fair will be held on Saturday, November 22nd from 9 am-3pm in the Church. It s time to start working on the Gift Baskets for the Gift Basket Raffle, and dreaming up some exceptional Silent Auction Items. We will have all of your favorite tables and of course the Snack Bar for all to enjoy! Please keep reading as I describe each table you may like to help at the Fair, or you may be able to help us in many other ways. Crafts & Kneedlework If you are a crafter or can knit, crochet or sew we would love to have your help making beautiful items for the Fair. Do you have ideas, samples or craft magazines to share? Any leftover notions, fabric or felt, trims, buttons, floral or greenery picks that are Fall or Christmas themed are useful. We also have supplies we can share for your project! Plants It s time to take cuttings to start new plants now, for healthy plants at Fair time. If you have decorative plant pots, books, gardening items or decorations you can donate we would love to have them. *NOTE: A Gardening Basket would be great for the raffle! Bake Table & Country Store Muffins, Breads, Cookies, Cakes & Pies the list goes on! Your home made jams, jellies and fudge would be great. We also love to have gently used Antiques and Collectables, linens, silver, and other Country Store Items. News about Apple Pie Baking Day will follow next month. At the Jewelry Table, we would love to have your unbroken and clean jewelry that you no longer use. Necklaces, Bracelets, Earrings, Rings, Pins, Tie Tacks and Cufflinks would all be appreciated! The Children s Table needs donations of New and Very Gently used Games, Books, Toys, Dolls, Stuffed Animals and Craft Items and Kits are popular too. The Gift Basket Raffle will be looking for donations of Themed Gift Baskets and/or the items that would go into one. Some of the most popular baskets are these: Chocolate Lovers, Pasta Dinner, Spa, Tea Time, Christmas, and Money Tree. Everyone loves the Gift Certificate Baskets too! They are the sons of Parker and Judith Glasier. As part of their requirement to preform a service, the boys spent a Saturday raking and cleaning up the Burncoat Street side of the church. St Michael s is in need of someone to snow blow this coming winter. The job pays $15.00 an hour. Contact Pete Seskevich at Since its beginning in 2009, we have given eighteen gift baskets to the newly baptized. The baskets are made up totally from donated items. There are copies of the list of items that go in each basket (as they do need to be the same) in the narthex as well as a basket to collect items. This is a wonderful way to welcome the newly baptized into St Michael s parish family. 5 Remembering Departed Parishioners Sidney Vernon (Bud) Rudge, 93, died Thursday, July 10, at Blaire House of Worcester. He was predeceased in 2013 by his beloved wife of 70 years, Anna Eleanor (Selen) Rudge. A lifelong resident of Worcester, he was born to Alfred H. and Annie E. (Greenhalge) Rudge, the 2nd of 5 sons. He grew up in Quinsigamond Village and lived there until he enlisted in the Marine Corps at the age of 18 to fight in WWII. He was assigned to the Pacific theater and fought at Guadalcanal, Bougainville, and Guam. The experience was to shape his life, and he was always very proud of his opportunity to serve his country as a Marine. After the war, Bud returned to Worcester and was employed by New England Power Co. for his entire working career. After retirement he learned to golf and it became a passion for him. At the age of 86 he got a hole in one at the Green Hill Golf Course, where he worked after retirement. He was a loyal, brave and generous man much loved and respected by his family and many friends. He leaves his daughter, Carole R. Lodding and her husband, David, of Natick; two sons, Donald V. Rudge and his wife, Pamela of Worcester and Paul S. Rudge and his wife Ann, of Sandy, Utah; six grandchildren Jeffrey W. Lodding, Dr. Cynthia C. Lodding, Matthew V. Rudge, Lisa A. Rudge, Jennifer D. Germer and Michael J. Rudge; three step-grandchildren Jodi, Benjamin and Emily Tucker and six great-grandchildren. He also leaves two brothers, Robert and Ronald Rudge both of Millbury. He was predeceased by grandson, Erik W. Lodding and his brothers Alfred Howard Rudge and Richard Rudge. A memorial service will be held for Bud and Eleanor at St. Michael s on-the-heights Episcopal Church, 340 Burncoat St. on Saturday, September 20 at 11 a.m. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to St. Michael s on-the-heights Episcopal Church, 340 Burncoat St., Worcester MA Nordgren Memorial Chapel, 300 Lincoln Street, Worcester MA is assisting the family with arrangements. First Friday Bill and Julie Burgoyne will be hosting the next First Friday meal on September 12, 2014 at 6:30 pm in the church library. Celebration of St. Michael s Day Sunday, September 28, 2014 Combined service with St. Matthew s and St. Luke s choirs at 10:00. Annual Chicken BBQ to follow.
