VOLUME 74, NO. 5 & 6 NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2017 Visit for the Latest Information and Council Events Grand Knight's Message by John Thomas Grand Knight Dear Brothers Knights and Sister Columbiettes: How about the 75 th Anniversary Dinner Dance? It turned out to be a big success and a great time for all. The Anniversary Mass, held at Notre Dame Church, concelebrated with Bishop Chappetto and Father McBrien, Father Grieco, and Father Slater was a beautiful and memorable beginning. We then traveled to the outdoor patio at Westbury Manor for a fantastic cocktail hour followed by dinner, where we had plenty to eat, drink and share good times with our Brother Knights, Sister Columbiettes, their family and friends. The four principles of our order: Charity, Unity, Fraternity, and Patriotism were evident throughout the day. We were honored to have the NYPD Pipe Band perform for us and they did a spectacular job. There were a total of 220 people in attendance who appeared to have a great time dancing to the music of DJ John, eating the delicious food and socializing with good friends. Brian Ennis, PGK, took on a great deal of responsibility leading up to our celebration. Additionally he was our emcee for the afternoon; which ensured that the guest speakers and raffle drawing remained on schedule. In addition, he and his wife, Rosie, put Published Monthly by NEW HYDE PARK KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS COUNCIL NO together a great selection of raffle prizes. Many thanks of appreciation to both of them. Thanks to Brother Knights Bob McCann, Mike Mikowski, Ed Long and many other Brother Knights who came during the day to help make our participation at the New Hyde Park Street Fair a huge success. The selling of our C & B continued during October at our Churches: Our Lady of The Snows, Holy Spirit and Notre Dame. On Tuesday, November 21, 7:00 PM at Holy Spirit Church our Council 2852 will celebrate our annual Memorial Mass for Deceased Members. This Mass is one of our most cherished events. It offers all of us a time to refl ect and remember our deceased in a special way. Family and friends are invited and encouraged to attend. Refreshments will follow in the cafeteria of the Church. At 9:00 AM on Saturday, December 2, we will need volunteers to help Chairman Tom McGowan, PGK, decorate the Christmas tree and set up the manger in front of Holy Spirit Church. On Tuesday, December 5, at 7:30 PM we will gather to celebrate Light Up For Christ as we light the tree and sing carols. We will then have refreshments in the cafeteria of the Church. Father Grieco is happy to host this event and we appreciate his hospitality. In the months ahead, we will be involved with Coats for Kids - a program to help the needy, Essay and Poster Contests for our elementary through high school students, Pro-Life March, plus many other activities. I urge all our Brother Knights to get involved as much as possible. Thanksgiving will be here before we know it. In closing, I wish you and your family a blessed, happy Thanksgiving. These popular signs come in RED or GREEN and will enhance your outdoor Christmas displays. The signs are being sold at our local parishes. Like we did last year the event will be held at Holy Spirit Church. Again, thanks to Father Grieco, the festivities will begin 7:30 PM in front of Holy Spirit Church. Then at exactly 8:00 PM, the switch will be thrown, our freshly cut tree and nativity will shine brightly - joining other Brother Knights and their families as Councils throughout the Order participate in announcing the coming of Christ s birthday. Afterwards we will have some light refreshments in the cafeteria located in the basement of the school. Dear Knights of Columbus of NHP: On behalf of the Missionary Sisters of St. Benedict and Residents of St. Joseph s Home for the Aged I wish to express our deepest gratitude for the generous donation that we have received from you in memory of Mr. Frank Grieco. On Saturday, September 16th, the New Hyde Park Knights of Columbus # 2852 participated in the annual New Hyde Park Village Street Fair. We had our usual location to sell C & B books and to recruit new members. The bright sunny day brought with it a large crowd. My fellow brothers all worked very hard to keep pace with the crowd throughout the busy day. At day s end their efforts refl ected their dedication to the tune of selling126 books. I would like to give a well deserved recognition to all my Brothers who gave up their time to help out and make this endeavor a success: GK John Thomas, DGK Charles Tartaro, PGK's Joe Wendling, Tom Liddy, Tom McGowan, Ben Massa, Harry O'Connor, and Patrick Crosson. I., (Center for Women s Health and Fertility); the goal is to raise $25,000 and a matching $25,000 will come from Supreme Council Harry O Connor, PGK Trustee World Priest Day, Sunday, October was a day set aside to honor our priests and deacons who have committed their lives to the Lord and to our Church. If you haven t already thanked your priests and deacons for all they do, then do it now. again and again. They give up so much for us and should be recognized and know they are not taken for granted. Special Olympics Basketball by Joe Abberton Dear Brother Knights & Sister Columbiettes: Come January we will begin the 11 th year of hosting our Special Olympics Basketball Program. Held on Thursday evenings at Manor Oaks School we encourage and appreciate the help from all our volunteers. And our young volunteers use this for community service credit. If there is anyone you know who would be interested in volunteering or would benefi t from enrolling in our program, please call me at When this issue of the Clarion went to print the starting date was not yet determined.
