1 NAZARETH NEWS 680 Nazareth Church Road, Moore, SC Office hours Monday Thursday APRIL 9:00 am 2:00 pm MISSION STATEMENT OF NAZARETH PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH To worship and glorify God and to make disciples for Christ. Dear Friends, As you will read in this newsletter, there are a lot of exciting things happening at Nazareth Presbyterian Church. What a dedicated group of disciples we have here in this Body of Christ. I am continually uplifted by the faith and service that I witness here regularly. However, in the midst of all the activities, I pray that you will intentionally walk with Jesus from the Mount of Olives to the Hill of Calvary and finally to the empty tomb. This effort will make the joy of Easter Sunday so much more complete. So I will offer a few challenges for experiencing Holy Week, besides reading the wonderful "Ordinary Saints" booklet, and coming to worship for Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday and Easter. During Holy week, choose a particular Gospel and read through the account of the last week of Christ day by day. OR compare the account of the crucifixion and resurrection in the four Gospels and the similarities and differences you find. OR put seven people's names (or seven families or causes) that you love in a bag and draw one out each day of that week and pray for them all day long. OR come up with one of your own and share it with me! It has been my experience that doing something like this makes the Good News, "He is not here! He is risen!" even more joyful. I thank you all for your witness and work that continues to spread the grace of Jesus Christ and look forward to celebrating Resurrection with you all. Blessings, Julie "For I know that my Redeemer lives, and that at the last he will stand upon the earth." Job 19:25

6 MISSION OPPORTUNITIES Please make a note of the opportunities we have to enjoy fellowship while serving the needs of others. Our day to work at The Carpenter s Table, located on the Tyger River Presbyterian Church campus, is April 8 from 9:00-12:00. Nazareth also volunteers at the Spartanburg Soup Kitchen. Come lend a helping hand and make a difference in the lives of those in our community! Hope to see you there Saturday, April 22 from 9:00-1:00. MISSION FOCUS FOR APRIL is the Soup Kitchen. Thank you for making a difference. We will receive Pennies for Hunger on Sunday, April 30 during the children s message. March Pennies for Hunger will go to Mobile Meals. FELLOWSHIP THE NEW DISCIPLE LUNCHEON will be held Sunday, April 9th, after worship. The congregation is asked to bring a salad or dessert. Plan now to attend and make this a big celebration! THE FRIENDSHIP CLUB will meet on April 19 at 11:45 in the Fellowship Hall. Please bring a friend and a dish or two to share. SAILING CLUB will have a party at Angela Smith s home on May 12th. WELCOME NEW ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT Debby Keaton I was raised in PA and grew up in church, the daughter of a minister. I met my husband, Rex, in college and after marrying, we traveled in evangelism, serving and ministering for Christ in sermon and song. We are blessed with four wonderful children and one awesome grandson. During our 15 years living in SC, I have worked in the private and public school system as a music teacher, secretary, and library assistant. I have enjoyed the last couple years caring for my grandson, Ty, as Nana. I am now very grateful and excited to be part of the team at Nazareth Presbyterian Church and appreciate all of your friendly smiles and welcoming words.

7 A Mission Opportunity Nazareth is a welcoming church. We hear this or some similar comment all of the time from guests and visitors. We support and encourage each other at every turn. We have taken to heart the concepts of fellowship, stewardship and service. Here is a situation we are challenged with occasionally. As you know, most of the people buried at Nazareth were members of the church. At least the people who purchased plots were members. As time has passed, a lot of those folks have passed away and many of their families have not continued as members. In fact, a good number have never been members or are at best only remotely connected in any way to the church. When graveside services are held for these people, many of their friends and family are present. They are good people, but none-the-less, they are strangers to Nazareth. Because of our location, there are few hospitality services immediately available. A good number of those people would like to have some kind of hospitality available, even if it is simply the use of our restrooms. The difficulty is that we currently do not have the resources organized to provide any of those services. We believe that we need to be sympathetic, accommodating and inviting toward these families. The difficulty is that we all have daily commitments and responsibilities. We would need a large enough pool of volunteers that may be able to host these occasions depending on their commitments on any given day. Depending on the number of anticipated attendees, anywhere from 2 to 5 hosts may be required. To do this, a pool of about a dozen people are needed. From past experience, this need may only occur once or twice a year. But, we need to be prepared. The alternative is that we have a policy where we simply do not allow any access to our facilities because of the lack of resources. We can do that. But how does that reflect on our church and congregation? We want to be welcoming and empathetic to these families, but we need to be prepared to do so. We need for you to consider being a member of this group of volunteers. If you would be willing, we ask that you contact Mike Baier to participate or get further information about the needs and expectations. This is an excellent opportunity to be part of an outreach mission that requires only a small commitment of time, but reflects very positively on Nazareth s commitment to the community and all of God s people. Please contact Mike and be a part of this opportunity. You can call the office or reach Mike directly at Thank you for your prayerful consideration.

8 SATURDAY SISTERS meeting will be announced. Presbyterian Women CIRCLE #3 will meet Monday, April 10, at the home of Pat Sykes, 205 Woodgrove Trace, Spartanburg, at 7:00 PM. We will be discussing Chapter 3 in our book Seize The Day. Visitors are welcome to join us. SAVE THE DATE: The 5th Annual Women s Retreat will take place April 28 & 29. Registration has begun! All women of the church are invited to attend. It is a wonderful opportunity for Disciple Development. Cost is $80 and scholarships are available. Retreat committee members will be available before and after church for registration. This year s retreat will be led by Jennie Scott, daughter of Steve and Vickie Gray. Its theme is Making Time for Your Dreams. If you would like to register by , contact Kim Cansler at rkplus3@gmail.com or The Retreat Committee will be collecting small prizes for games that will be played during our retreat weekend. If you have something that you would like to donate, please see Kim Cansler or Kim Kotecha. Thank you! BAKERS, if you are interested in baking Communion bread and/or the squares, please contact Elaine McLeod or Amelia Senn for the recipes. Your assistance in providing these elements for Communion would be appreciated. You would only need to provide these items occasionally, not every month. Elaine McLeod: Elainegmc@yahoo.com or Amelia Senn: ameliasenn@bellsouth.net
