Greetings friends and families of UUMC, May the peace of Christ be with you and yours! As some of you may know, in December, I submitted the exams I wrote for my ordination as a full Elder in the United Methodist Church. I spent months last year reflecting, writing, reviewing, and editing my almost 100 pages of exams. In all honesty, it was an EXTENSIVE (and exhausting) process! But it was also a great opportunity to reflect on my theology and my ministry during my two-year Provisional period. I am thankful I was given the chance to remember and reflect on that time. I admit I enjoyed the process more than I expected. In addition to the exams I wrote, more than 10 people wrote reference letters on my behalf that were submitted to the Board. Many thanks to all my references for their time, effort, and assistance during this lengthy process. Many thanks to each of you, as well, for your prayers and encouragement as I continue to pursue ordination in the UMC. By God s grace, I passed the written exams and am now invited to meet with the Board of Ordained Ministry for an interview on Tuesday, February 5, in Rancho Palos Verdes. Passing the written exam is only half of the process. After my interview, the Board of Ordained Ministry will decide whether to recommend me to the Conference for ordination. If I pass the interview, I will be ordained during Annual Conference later this year. I covet your continued prayers and support and thank you for the opportunity to be in ministry with you. Hee Jung Yu UUMC Franklin Team Update of January activities Kindness Is Kool was begun at Franklin Elementary January 28 as five Franklin Team members moved through the play ground at the lunch recess, handing out tickets to students doing kind things. Children cheerfully put their earned tickets in Leslie Kowalski s bucket; we expect to return each week, then randomly pull out 30 or so for a fun lunchtime activity in February or March. Some of the team members had met with Franklin s principal, Heidi Vazquez, earlier in January to explain the program and set it s kick-off date. Dr. Vazquez eagerly welcomes positive interaction and reward for students. We also resumed monthly meetings with the administration by setting February 14 for the next one. 3 (Franklin School article cont.) Representatives joined the January 16 PTA meeting to keep abreast of opportunities to help with students. We thank all contributors of books for Franklin s curb-side Book Box, enabling us to keep that full for students and parents. Staff envisioned that children would return books, cycling them around as a free lending library, so concern ensued when an empty box signaled CHILDREN WERE KEEPING THEM. We are delighted to put books in community homes, and -- with just over 2,000 books received to date - - are ready to re-supply the box. United Methodist Women The Esther-Lydia Circle began with scriptures of God s calling women and men to service. Exodus 3, Judges 6, Esther 4, and Acts 9 gave examples of calls for a specific time or lifestyle. We reflected on personal experiences of being called by God. God s call to service was a transition for 2019 budget pledges, led by our UMW treasurer. In reviewing assets, Dorothy Cable pointed out the Bereavement Fund balance in our account but our inability to organize and serve a lunch after Delbert Schmidt s service. Wanting to make this money available to church families, we agreed to ask the Church Council to transfer it into an account for memorial meals and suggest a contact coordinator for its use. Dorothy Cable served apple pie with whipped topping after the program. We gather next on February 14 at 10:30; bring a light entrée if you wish to extend the dessert and drink provided by hostess, Doris Washom, to a noon meal fellowship. Rachel Wintergerst, Circle secretary/ treasurer Volunteer to work with Franklin Elementary Students? Volunteers who want to interact with students must: 1)Have a clear TB test, and 2)Turn in the Redlands Unified School District Volunteer Application to the school office. Get the form (and information about the TB test) from the Franklin office, RUSD office, or David Center.

4 Summary of January 27 Church Council Meeting There was no meeting of the Church Council for the month of January. They will meet again on February 24 after the church service in the Wesley Lounge. David Nesamony talked to us and showed pictures of his mission trip to India. The birthday people were Hazel Cook, Wilma Fisher and Dorothy Cable. The birthday cake was furnished by Rachel Wintergerst. It was a great carrot cake which was home made. The cake for February will be furnished by Marjorie Miller. We had a sympathy card for Del Schmidt which was signed by all. Our program for the February 13th will be presented by Gary Wintergerst on his trip with Rachel to London, South Hampton and the Trans Atlantic Crossing. The African Children s Choir program promotes the beauty, dignity and unlimited ability of the African child around the world, being a voice for the millions of suffering children who cannot speak for themselves. The program provides for the children s well-being and quality education, utilizing the transformative power of music. We install Christian principles through teaching and leading by example and bring relief and development to African nations in crisis. The African Children s Choir is more than just a choir. It s part of a larger, international, Christian organization called Music for Life, which provides thousands of impoverished children throughout Africa with the education, discipleship and leadership skills needed to rise above their conditions so they can bring positive, lasting change to their families, communities, and countries.
