C olton A v e., R e dlands, CA Web s i t e: w ww. u um credlands. org E- m ail: r edl ands uu mc. office@gm ail.com The vision of University United Methodist Church is to witness to Jesus Christ in the world as His disciples by the power of the Holy Spirit. Greetings families and friends of UUMC, Grace and peace to you all. We are once again entering the season of anticipating Christ s second Advent. Ever since God created the world, we have been anticipating God s work in our lives. In 2018, we received many blessings from God. As always, we loved and supported one another in Christ as a faith community. We laughed and grieved with our beloved people. To extend our love beyond the church walls, we initiated a relationship with Franklin Elementary School, which has blossomed to more than what we expected. We donated more than 2,000 books to support their Book Box program. We donated school supplies and provided breakfast to the staff. In order to enhance our ministry with the school, we created Franklin Task Force, which meets regularly with the school Principal in her office. It is exciting to see our new members joining our outreach to the school. Our welcoming and inviting worship and fellowship for Franklin in September was a great success! We now have a choir! Our new choir director, Leslie Kowalski, and her choir add so much beauty to our worship. I am looking forward to enjoying our choir s Christmas Cantata during our Sunday worship on December 2. Beyond her choir, Leslie worked hard to lead our children for children s Christmas play, which will be presented during our pot-luck lunch on Sunday, December 9. Please mark your calendars for these important events! Our faithful and dedicated Readiness 360+ team has completed the 15-month church revitalization program! It has been an extensive, yet an inspiring and rejuvenating journey. Our perspectives have changed to be more missional, aligning our identity and purpose as a church with Jesus Great Commission to make disciples of Christ. As the team noted at the last training in November, IT IS ONLY THE BEGINNING OF OUR JOURNEY WITH GOD! Out of our effort to minister to Hispanic neighbors in our community, the Church Council decided to call a half-time, local-hired, bilingual Community Developer, and applied for a micro-grant to the District Planning and Strategy committee. By God s grace, we got the grant! I praise God for all the blessings we received in In addition, I give you all thanks for your sincere and faithful partnership with God for God s missions. I thank you for your support for my work at University Church. As a blessed people, let us give honor and glory to God and answer God s call on us to share our blessings with our neighbors and those who have not heard the good news of our Lord, Jesus Christ! May the Lord bless us abundantly in the coming year and beyond! In Christ, Rev. Hee Jung Yu

3 Join in Advent / Christmas preparations as we look forward to this season! Children are rehearsing for December 9 program, so please make sure yours get to 11:10-11:30 rehearsals in the south classroom (in the center of upper patio). Leslie Kowalski is eager to sing with the children (YOUR help is also welcome) every Sunday after worship through December 2 for It All Happened in The Country. Finger foods and Christmas cookies are desired December 9. It wouldn t be quite right to have the children wait until AFTER our usual second-sunday potluck before their program. Bring your favorite holiday snack to share after the children s Christmas program. Attention Movie Lovers This month, the Movie Lovers group will meet on Tuesday, December 18 to see the first showing of the chosen film, hopefully starting between 10 and 11 a.m. Which movie we see, and which theater we go to, depends on what s showing that week, and that will be announced in worship the Sunday before the gathering. Our discussion after the film will be at either Las Fuentes or Farmer Boys. The $5.00 price at the Studio Movie Grill makes that theater attractive, but the timing of the film may make the Harkens theatre the better option. If you want to know more, please contact George Crisp: (909) United Methodist Women All women are invited to come to the Circle meeting at Carol Ann Nelsen s home at 1255 Amethyst, Space #70, Mentone on Thursday, December 20 at 10:30 a.m. You are invited to bring a favored Christmas ornament or card and Hors d oeuvres to share, as we reminisce and celebrate United Methodist Women s 150 years in mission. Volunteer to work with Franklin Elementary Students? Volunteers who want to interact with students must: 1)Have a clear TB test, and 2)Turn in the Redlands Unified School District Volunteer Application to the school office. Get the form (and information about the TB test) from the Franklin office, RUSD office, or David Center. Church Staff Serving You Bishop: Rev. Grant J. Hagiya District Superintendent: Rev. 4 Summary of November 25 Church Council Meeting Treasurer Dale Wintergerst will send a 2019 Draft Budget to the office for inclusion with other required reports for our church Annual Conference on December 9; this will be a rough draft only as our Stewardship Celebration is not until December 16. Trustee Gary Wintergerst noted that the 2018 property maintenance budget line has been very inadequate, especially in light of the few trustees and little response to work days. Bob Denham will put that discussion on the December Council agenda. Rev Hee Jung Yu s Salary & Benefits Package was approved at the rate for a fully ordained elder status, as we sincerely pray she will achieve that ordination. We also approved the Staff-Parish Relations Committee Appointment Recommendation & Pastoral Evaluation 2019 CC Form #6 which requests Rev. Hee Jung Yu continue her appointment with UUMC for the upcoming year. Rachel will ask the office include two more activities in the December Univista: Informal Christmas Carol Sing with David Center and Jamin Hunt, about 7PM December 21. New Year s Party December 31 for 6 9PM (coordinated by Bob and Stephanie Denham) Pastor Hee Jung has continued making hospital and home visits. She felt blessed to bring her chaplain s training to support Delbert and Edyie Schmidt. Intense focus is needed to complete requirements before taking ordination exams. District Superintendent Rev. Melissa MacKinnon presides over our Annual Conference at Yucaipa at 4 PM on December 9 with our Methodist Mission Group churches (Banning, Redlands University and First, and Yucaipa). David Center distributed Financial Policies for University United Methodist Church ; these were approved as recommended. He also noted our 2017 financial records were audited and a memo of recommendations filed. David asked that the December agenda include his strong recommendation that the pastor address financial stewardship at least once a quarter during worship service. Rachel Wintergerst, Church Council Secretary Interested members are welcome to join the next council meeting Sunday, December 23. Complete minutes of November 25 will be posted near the northwest social hall door. Contact any church council member with concerns or suggestions. We are Church Council Chair Bob Denham; Finance members David Center, Leslie Hall, and Dale Wintergerst; Staff Parish members Glen Icanberry, Gerald Moody, and Daniel Morales; Trustees Gerald Nila, Clara Titera, and Gary Wintergerst; Member-at-large David Nesamony, Lay Leader Rachel Wintergerst, and Rev. Hee Jung Yu
5 Sixty Plus Fellowship Liz Roark opened in prayer for our November meeting and great luncheon. Our Birthday people were Carol Ann Nelsen and Don Wirth. We are grateful to have Susie Wintergerst here to tell us of her home country of Japan. We with to thank her husband, Dale Wintergerst for giving his wife a helping hand. She showed us pictures of castles. One was the Matsumoto Castle (1504 AD). The Fushimi Shrine in Kyoto (711 AD), Torie gateways had become used as an offering by the start of the Edo period ( ) to symbolize a wish for or acknowledgement of the passing of prayers from people to the deity. It was a wonderful program and we all learned a little more about Japan. The Birthday cake was furnished by Eleanor Johnson. The cake for December will be furnished by Daisy Wakeland. The December 12 meeting will have our annual Christmas sing along. It will be hosted by David Center and Don Wirth will be on piano. Blessings for Christmas and the New Year from, Eleanor Johnson and Elaine Thorpe Pastor Hee Jung s work days are Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. She works on her full connection Board of Ordained Ministry exams on Fridays. Pastor is available for an appointment on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
