Summary of Franklin Elementary PTA meeting Dear Friends and Members: UUMC is excited to continue our mission in support of our community and neighbor, Franklin Elementary School. Three UUMC/Franklin Elementary Task Force members volunteered to attend a monthly PTA meeting held on September 19 th at 3PM at the school. In attendance were: Rachel Wintergerst, Leslie Kowalski and Christy Royer. Our group was warmly welcomed to the meeting. PTA president Regina graciously provided us time to present our thoughts and inquiries of how we could best continue our ministry to Franklin. We first recognized and thanked Principal Heidi for her presentation of the Mission Moment at UUMC on Sept 9 th. We were blessed to host many Franklin families, including Heidi s, at our BBQ/Potluck following the service. One of the many ways UUMC supports Franklin and creates a positive community relationship is by supplying their outside Book Box with donated books. Located in the school s drive-thru, this outside book box is available for use after school and on weekends for all Franklin children. Students are encouraged to read as much as possible and the book box allows them the opportunity to take books home with them as often as they want. We reaffirmed our intention to continue this ongoing support. To date UUMC has donated 1,823 books for all grade levels. Principal Heidi has assured us that the children love the quantity and variety of books provided. We continued with questions of how UUMC could support on-going Franklin efforts for students & families, asking about weekend food backpacks, teacher assistance in preparation of school materials, and reading in classrooms. Weekend food backpacks are provided to students suggested to Building A Generation program in the school Family Resource Center. We received a very positive response and were encouraged to move forward as quickly as we are comfortable. The schedule for in-classroom reading to students, preparing materials from teachers for his/her classroom, and weekend food backpacks will all be coordinated with the Assistant Principal. We continued by inquiring if UUMC members could join Franklin PTA. Members were excited about this idea. Membership envelopes were provided and all UUMC members are encouraged and welcome to join. 3 Join in Advent / Christmas preparations as we look forward to this season! Children are rehearsing for December 9 program, so please make sure yours get to 11:10-11:30 rehearsals in the south classroom (in the center of upper patio). Leslie Kowalski is eager to sing with the children (YOUR help is also welcome) every Sunday after worship through December 2 for It All Happened in The Country. Singing in the choir is DEVINE especially when rehearsing for the December 2 cantata. Join in the fun on Wednesday evenings at 6:45 PM, beginning a joyous choir year this fall. Finger foods and Christmas cookies are desired December 9. It wouldn t be quite right to have the children wait until AFTER our usual second-sunday potluck before their program. Bring your favorite holiday snack to share after the children s Christmas program. Attention Movie Lovers The Movie Lovers group will meet one week later than usual, on Tuesday, October 23, to see the first showing of the chosen film, hopefully starting between 10 and 11 a.m. Which movie we see, and which theater we go to, depends on what s showing that week, and that will be announced in worship the Sunday before the gathering. Our discussion after the film will be at either Las Fuentes or Farmer Boys. The $5.00 price at the Studio Movie Grill makes that theater attractive. Volunteers who want to interact with students must: 1)Have a clear TB test, and 2)Turn in the Redlands Unified School District Volunteer Application to the school office. Get the form (and information about the TB test) from the Franklin office, RUSD office, or David Center. 4 Summary of Church Council Meeting of September 23 The Council finalized our vision statement: The vision of University United Methodist Church is to witness to Jesus Christ in the world as His disciples by the power of the Holy Spirit. Following David Nesamony s suggested, we set December 16 as Consecration Sunday. The stewardship campaign guest leader will give the message, and a celebration meal is served in the social hall after worship. David Center encouraged we give David N. a positive response if asked to serve, noting the frustration and unease coming after several refusals. Trustee chairman, Gary Wintergerst, reported there is more work to eradicate graffiti on the north side of the lower patio. A city notice of a failure to repair leaks will require more sprinkler work. Call him ( ) to help work on either task, or to be a coworker on future maintenance projects.. Saturday, October 27 evening Halloween Party was added to the church calendar. Leslie Kowalski said the December 2 worship service will be the Christmas Cantata; Children s Christmas program will be December 9 in the social hall. We suggested refreshments be offered after their performance and members be encouraged to bring finger foods and Christmas cookies, rather than have a potluck. December 16 will have a served Consecration Sunday Celebration meal after worship. Pastor Hee Jung Yu is writing ordination papers and said it was a privilege to have us in this process. The papers also include a filmed worship service, probably October 28. We reviewed our outreach to Franklin Elementary School, suggestions from Rev. Joel Hortiales (R360+ coach), and grant support money available. Motion: Church Council approved writing a microgrant application for Conference and East District financial support to hire a bilingual Community Developer. Motion: UUMC put forth $2,500 as matching money for the microgrant application. David C. will check Memorial Funds for $2,500 matching money and send his suggestions to treasurer, Dale W. Gary, Bob, and Pastor Hee Jung will write up the microgrant application, ASAP as the board for approval meets next on October 2. Interested members are welcome to join the next council meeting Sunday, October 28. Complete minutes of September 23 will be posted near the northwest social hall door. 5 Commission on the Way Forward Bishop Grant Hagiya Date & Time: Sunday, October 14, 2018; 3:00 5:00 pm Location: UMC of Cucamonga, 7690 Archibald Ave., Rancho Cucamonga, CA Bishop Grant Hagiya will be meeting with clergy and laity in the East District regarding the Way Forward decision. He will be speaking to the district and will listen to your concerns and questions. All are welcome to join the gathering. Registration forms will be sent out by when ready and will also be available by request. Please make sure to register as a church for this important event. We have new, updated Church directories. 6 United Methodist Women Rev. Hee Jung Yu joined the Esther-Lydia Circle September 20 to tell us of the Korean Methodist Women s movement, which began with a women s missionary group visit in Although women have held mission leadership positions for years, they are not encouraged to become lead pastors in the Korean Methodist Church. Carol Ann Nelsen reflected on the May 2018 UMW Assembly held in Ohio, as Mikhayla Roark s class schedule did not allow her to share her experience there. Carol Ann also noted United Methodist Women celebrate their 150 th anniversary this coming year, telling us of the Legacy Fund, and national level mission projects. A short business program followed the program, before a light dessert was served. All women are invited to the 10:30 am meeting on October 18. Sixty Plus Fellowship David Center opened us in prayer on our first meeting after the summer holidays. We had a delicious luncheon. We always have good cooks. I asked Carmen Ivory to give us a devotional. She read a poem called Take it to Jesus. It was very good. Then the program was turned over to Gary Wintergerst. He showed us slides of Harrisburg and Hershey, Pennsylvania. Gary and Rachel were there in the fall, so there were lots of fall colors. He showed pictures of the capital building, which is quite beautiful. It is 15 miles to Hershey, PA from there where all the lovely Hershey's chocolate is made. There is a place called Chocolate World where you can get all the different kinds of chocolate that Hershey's makes. He also showed us pictures of antique cars in the museum. Birthdays for September were Stephanie Denham, Linda Smith and Gary Wintergerst. The birthday cake was furnished by Elaine Thorpe. Dorothy Cable will furnish the cake for October. The meeting on October 10th will have Family Services to tell us what they are doing. Please remember to bring food items to help fill the food pantry at Family Services. 7 (continued from the front page) One of our UUMC members, Daisy Wakeland, provided a donation to the PTA and it was graciously and gratefully accepted by President Regina. Leslie presented an idea for student support. It is called Manners Matter. This is a very simple program for catching and recognizing/rewarding children when adults observe acts of kindness towards others. PTA Members were pleased with this suggested program to recognize acts of kindness, as Kindness is the theme for school this year. They suggested we further integrate this by changing the title to Kindness is Cool. Positive recognition is always reassuring and very welcome. Since this could be easily implemented, we were encouraged to do that by speaking with the Assistant Principal. We can let her know times that UUMC volunteers could interact with students on the playground and/or cafeteria for the Kindness Is Cool program. As we wrapped up our meeting, we were provided a list of intended PTA event and activity dates for outside-of-classroom general volunteer opportunities. We were also provided with Franklin s class schedules for full and minimum days, to allow us the opportunity for better communication when volunteers are available for students. Rachel is graciously serving as our communication liaison with Franklin. A final note is that the first PTA event was Sept 20 - Family Arts Night, from 5-7PM. This is an introduction to the (national) PTA Reflections Art Program, creations on the theme What Heroes Mean to ME will be due October 19.
