15 WE INTRODUCE Rev Christiaan and Irma Jooste GK Waterberg Rev Christiaan Jooste was born and bred on the West Rand in Krugersdorp. After finishing school at Hoërskool Bekker, he initially studied agriculture at the then Technikon Pretoria and started a career in agriculture until he followed up the calling in 2001 to become a minister. He met Irma Dykstra in 1994, a qualified hair stylist. They were married in March 2003 and were blessed with 5 children, 4 daughters and a son. The Jooste family has stood in service of the Lord s church in 4 congregations to date. They joined the GK Innesdal/Eloffsdal combination in 2007 and served there for a bit more than 2 years. In 2009 they accepted a calling to GK Wonderboompoort and ministered there for 7 years until August Since then they are part of GK Waterberg. This rural ministry poses special challenges and fulfilment for a minister of God s Word. Traditionally Afrikaans congregations, especially in the country, are facing the reality of shrinking membership due to aging, urbanisation and a decrease in children per family. The GK Waterberg is, therefore, located in a community characterised by a range of retirement villages where the average age of the congregation is quite high. The challenges of an aging congregation are also the associated financial pressure on pensions that does not keep up with sharp increases in daily living costs. The pastoral care of the congregation is also confronted with unique challenges in terms of fading health, loneliness, children and grandchildren who have emigrated and other diaconal challenges. Aside from ministering in the local church, the Joostes also feel pressed upon to be involved with community, especially in terms of private education. The value, on the one hand, and the lack of Reformed education, on the other hand, confirms the enormous task to convey the precious Reformed doctrine in the church as well as in schools and society. It is part of our calling. 15
