GEORGE AREA: CHIEF ENGINEER-R&D Grant Johnson (435) Demo of the Month September 2018 The demo for the month of September was presented by the Prez, Will Arcularius. Will showed an alternative method to turn the tenon off any piece and how to turn a natural edge flower vase with glass inserts. The alternative method to turn off the bottom of any piece is just long bolts, plywood, and rubber matting to create an inside support jig. This is a "redneck" alternative to using a Longworth chuck or using Cole jaws. (Continued on next page)

2 Demo of the Month In order to demonstrate the turning of two separate twig pots/bud vases on his demo, Will had completed the base on one of the pieces and the upper on the other. Initial turning on both pieces were turned between centers and establishing a tenon on the base of both. Will also showed how to save the bark on the Aspen to give it a natural look. As will commented, flower display vases are easy to turn and make great gifts for almost any occasion. Also, the glass test tubes which allow one to place fresh flowers in the vase are inexpensive from Craft Supplies USA. A video of Will s demos will be available at a future meeting.

3 Above is Caleb Williams showing an acorn Christmas ornament and an Aspen branch peppermill. Caleb also showed a Mesquite goblet which is pictured in the Close Up section. Below left Brent Arnold showing a small Red Cedar/Walnut goblet and a large Aspen candlestick holder. Brent also showed several hollow form Christmas ornaments which are pictured in the Close Up section. Below is showing an Aspen platter with the Cedar City logo and sister city, Gapyeong, South Korea logo which will be presented to Cedar's sister city. Will is also showing a large Aspen bowl with a turquoise inlace rim.

4 Above is Jack Gunn showing a Maple bowl with Bloodwood accents segmented into the piece and a staved lidded vase made from numerous species. Jack also showed a segmented water style pitcher which is pictured in the Close up section. Below is Ken Ragsdale showing a delicate Redwood rimmed platter and a large California Pepper bowl with numerous voids. Below left is Karl Bradshaw showing some irregular segmented rolling pins which he is currently working on. Below right is new member, Kevin Luthy, showing a colorful Aspen bowl with sawdust filled cracks. Kevin also showed some acrylic darts pictured in the Close Up section.

5 Above is Bill Vincent showing Kevin Truman Olivewood burl bandsaw box which was made from a Jerry log pulled Keller from a bonfire. Bill is also showing numerous small turnings made from a branch given to him by a park ranger during a hike in Zion National park which will make nice gifts. 9 Meeting Information Prez Message It s heck getting old. just had my right thumb operated on to eliminate the bone on bone contact. I guess I have worn out both of my thumbs because the other is due next. Of course as soon as I get the hand in a cast I can find a million things to do which require my right hand or both. DO NOT GET OLD or develop a great sense of humor. The club has had excellent success in selling our turnings at Wet Willy s Car Wash. These sales will enable us to have a few more pro workshop this coming year. A special thanks to those who have turned pieces for Wet Willy s. When we first started the club, our demonstrations were very successful in getting members to duplicate the demo and bring a challenge piece for the next meeting. That has fallen off substantially and we need to get out of our comfort zone and turn whatever was demonstrated the past month. You will be receiving more reminders and encouragement to participate. This month the challenge is a twig pot or bud vase. If you look up either the bud vase or the twig pot on the web and go to images you will see so many different sizes and shapes. Also check out YouTube videos. See ya in October with lots of bud vases or twig pots. Hopefully, you will also donate them to Wet Willy s for the club sale.
