1 The Greatest Gift Session 1 Lessons for the Leader When you hear the word promise, what comes to mind? Do you think of promises people made to you but did not keep? Do you think of promises you made? Did you keep them? Read Isaiah 7:1-14. Why do you think King Ahaz refused to ask for a sign from God? How do you think the people felt hearing God's words spoken through the prophet Isaiah? How does reading and knowing God kept His promise make you feel? Read Isaiah 9:6. How do people select names for their children today? What do you think of when you hear people's names? Consider the names Isaiah listed. What do these names tell you about Jesus? Read Isaiah 11:1-5. During Old Testament times, the Holy Spirit empowered individuals for a specific task. Once complete, the Spirit left. Isaiah states that the coming Ruler, however, would have the Spirit rest on Him, meaning "to settle and remain settled." Compare the Old Testament view of the Spirit with the New Testament view. How does knowing God's Spirit is with you change your outlook on life? Read Micah 5:2. Micah prophesied that not only would the Messiah be in David's family line, but He would be born in David's birthplace, Bethlehem. Reflect on the promises recorded in the Books of Isaiah and Micah. How does knowing God kept His promise affect your celebration of Christmas? In what ways do you think the world would be different had God not kept His promise? Pray for each child in your ministry by name. Ask God to help each child understand the true meaning of Christmas. What do these symbols mean? Explain: "Isaiah said the Savior would come from the family of King David. The Savior would have God's Spirit of wisdom, understanding, strength, knowledge, and the fear of the Lord. The Savior would be fair to the poor and would punish the wicked. He would also be completely just, faithful, and holy." Say: "The prophet Micah also told about the birth of the Savior. Listen as I read aloud Micah 5:2." Read aloud Micah 5:2. Ask: "In what city did Micah say the Savior would be born?" State: "Bethlehem was a small town in Judah. 12 Worship KidStyle Children's Edition Parent Connection Parents: Check out what your child is learning in Worship KidStyle! The information on this page will help you carry out your role as your child's primary spiritual developer by continuing the discussion we have in class throughout the week. The Greatest Gift This unit will show the amazing sacrificial gift that Jesus was and continues to be. Session 1: The Gift Is Promised The Big Idea: I can know God promised to send the Savior. The Bible Story: The Promise Is Given (Isaiah 7:14; 9:6; 11:1-5; Micah 5:2) Key Bible Verse: Isaiah 9:6 Connecting Points: Recall the Bible story. Ask: "What are some of the words or names used to describe the Baby Jesus?" Allow kids to respond. Ask: "What kinds of words do we use to describe babies today?" Notice the guarantee in the promise of Jesus not only as a baby but of His long-term impact on the world Consider: "How many babies today are welcomed with such chatter... hundreds of years before they are born?" Realize God has the same "chatter" of excitement about us. He longs for us to grow and rely on His will for our lives through the promises found in His Word. Pray today your family will be a family of prayer resting and living in the excited anticipation of God's promises fulfilled. Session 2: Preparing for the Gift The Big Idea: I can tell people Jesus is the Son of God. The Bible Story: Angels Speak to Mary and Joseph (Luke 1:26-56; 1:18-24) Key Bible Verse: Matthew 1:21 Connecting Points: Ask: "When was the last time you told about Jesus and what He is doing in your life?" Allow responses. Ask: "Why do we not tell others about Jesus?" Turn on a CD player as a distraction. Softly whisper a sentence to the first person. Each person will whisper the phrase to the next person until all have heard the statement. The last person will say what he heard. Ask: "How was the ending statement different from the beginning statement?" Say: "God can speak in the softest whisper or in the loudest yell. Though we can't always trust what we hear around us, we can always trust God." Pray your family begins to focus on God's voice and to allow God to lead them. Session 3: The Gift Arrives The Big Idea: I can thank God for sending Jesus. The Bible Story: Jesus Is Born (Luke 2:1-20) Key Bible Verse: Luke 2:11 Connecting Points: Review the Bible story. Ask the children for one word to sum up the story. Did "thankfulness" or "gratefulness" make the list? Ask: "How many times in a day do you say 'thank you'? Why?" Did their answers include thanking people for holding the door open or to someone for helping them at school? What about thanking God? Consider how life would be different had Jesus not come as a baby and had God not sent His only Son. Think about that word only "no one and nothing more." Jesus was God's perfection, yet He willingly gave it for us. Pray today your family would live a life in response to that sacrifice with thankfulness and gratefulness. Session 4: The Gift Is Shared The Big Idea: I can have a relationship with Jesus. The Bible Story: The Best Gift of All (Luke 2:21-40) Key Bible Verse: John 3:16 Connecting Points: As a family, discuss the gifts you have received over the years. Ask: "What gift would you consider a good gift, a better gift, and the all-time best gift? Would you consider sharing that gift with anyone? What makes each gift fall into each category? How would you make a good gift into a better or a best gift?" Realize Jesus gives us a gift every day... relationship with Him. Ask: "How can we move our relationship with Jesus into the 'best' category?" Guide each family member to write his response and post it in a place to remind him daily to be thankful for the best, most tailor-made gift of all Jesus. Pray today your family appreciates the best gift of Jesus. Session 5: The Impact of the Gift The Big Idea: I can worship Jesus. The Bible Story: Incredible Gifts (Matthew 2:1-12) Key Bible Verse: Psalm 146:2 Connecting Points: Ask: "What is worship?" Record responses. Note which responses revolve around the parts of a church service. Say: "Worship is so much more than music, teaching, and the things we 'see;' worship is a lifestyle. It is how we show Jesus' worth to us, both when people are looking but especially when they aren't. Simply put, we use our gifts to show His worth to us." Post this list and pray daily for your family to shift their mind-set to realize their worth to Jesus and to respond accordingly through their lives. 14 The Promise Is Given A prophet is a person who speaks for (the king, the governor, God). The prophet (Ezekiel, Isaiah, Jeremiah) lived in (Jordan, Egypt, Jerusalem) (500, 700, 900) years before Jesus' (birth, baptism, death). Isaiah said God would send a Savior. Isaiah also said the baby would be called (Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, and Prince of Peace). Isaiah 11:1-5 tells other information the prophet Isaiah wrote about the Savior. Isaiah said the Savior would come from the family of (King Saul, King David, King Josiah). The Savior would have God's Spirit of wisdom, understanding, strength, knowledge, and the fear of the Lord. The Savior would be (unfair, fair) to the poor and would (award, punish) the wicked. He would also be completely just, faithful, and holy. The prophet (Micah, Jeremiah, Jonah) also told about the birth of the Savior. Micah said the Savior would be born in the city of (Nazareth, Bethlehem, Bethany), a small town in Judah. Although Isaiah and Micah told about Jesus' birth over 700 years before it occurred, we can know God promised to send the Savior and that God (did not keep, kept) His promise.
