I ve enjoyed the three years that I have been able to serve as president and would like to thank you all for the opportunity but it s time for me to let someone else take over the reins. Lonnie Jensen will be stepping in as our new president of BFC and will do a fantastic job promoting our passion for blacksmithing. This will leave an opening for VP, if you interested please contact me before the conference when we will hold elections. I was enjoying our wonderful Southern Utah with family during the July meeting at Lonnie s shop so I was not able to attend but I did hear there was a great turn out and lots of folks making noise at the anvil! Our group is growing with a lot of new faces and it s good to see so many people interested in this great trade of blacksmithing. A big thanks to Lonnie for opening up his shop and equipment to members for this hammer-in. If anyone is interested in hosting a meeting at their place get with Lonnie, we are always looking for new places to hold meetings. Our annual blacksmithing conference is just around the corner and you won t want to miss this one with Peter Ross! Be sure to sign up early, this ensures you a free dinner and helps us to better plan for the conference. Bring one or two or ten things for the Iron in the Hat and something for the auction. There will be a gallery to display your work so bring your metal work to share with the other members. Also, plan on making something for the Iron Trade, more the merrier. Space for the Friday workshop is limited so contact me to get signed up ( ). Hope to see you all there! Keep the fire hot and the slack tub full, Shane Hall
2 Page 2 Top of the Anvil July Meeting Highlights Our July meeting was in Tremonton at Lonnie s shop. We had a great turnout with about 18 people. Several new people showed up. I think we got 2 or 3 new members. Lonnie demonstrated how to make two different types of candle holders. One was a cone shaped twisted holder that one would mount into a piece of wood. The second was another twist holder that had a steel plug in it that was used to raise the burning candle. Both holders used special tooling which we were able to make at the meeting. The third thing he demonstrated was how to make candle stick cup holders from copper pipe. Here again he had special guillotine tool with several different diameter holes which allowed for a controlled necking down of the copper. As always Lonnie very hospitable with his shop and his tools. We need to remember that whenever anyone opens their shop to us we need to be respectful of their tools. Conference Info Demonstrator: Peter Ross Content: History of 18th century blacksmithing and colonial hardware Location: Lightning Forge (4757 Plum Street. Murray, UT ) Date & Time: 12th (workshop), 13th and 14th of September Fee: See registration on page 4 Iron Trade: Necklace/Keychain Pendant Note: Bring some thing for the iron in the hat/ your own tools if you plan on doing the workshop. 3 August / September 2014 Page 3 Conference Info Peter Ross took his first blacksmith lesson at Stonybrook Museums, in After attending the Rhode Island School of Design he worked his way through various shops working as a blacksmith until he moved to be the Master blacksmith at Colonial Williamsburg. Peter worked to promote the study of blacksmithing through historically accurate processes. He remained at the museum from 1979 to Peter has now begun pursuing his own ventures of producing historic hardware reproductions in his own studio. Peter has demonstrated nationally at several ABANA conferences as well as most of the countries craft schools. Friday the 12th will be a workshop with Peter Ross. This workshop will cover making tongs in a traditional manner. You will learn hammer control, forging techniques, forge welding and much more in the one day workshop. Some basic blacksmithing skills are required but this workshop will be suited for new and seasoned smiths. Only those that are registered for the class will be able to attend on Friday, due to space and safety we can't have people show up to just watch the workshop. Cost for the workshop will be $90.00 if you bring your own anvil, forge, tongs, hammer and fuel. If you need to borrow equipment and fuel the cost will be $ This workshop will be limited to 12 participants. Contact Shane Hall to register or for more Iron in the Hat and Auction These help keep us solvent. The generosities you express with your donations of the items that are drawn and auctioned off generate the revenue to keep Bonneville Forge Council going. If you are going to participate in the Iron Trade please also bring something for Iron in the Hat and/or Auction. Gallery There will be a gallery to display your work so bring your metal work to share with the other members. Tailgating Bonneville Forge Council encourages Tailgating for its members. In turn tailgaters are expected to donate items to the Iron in the Hat or Auction.

6 Page 6 Top of the Anvil Your Smithy Over the past several months when I would call people to interview them about their smithy I kept talking to folks that said they took classes from Jarom Rush; so I decided to talk to Jarom this month. He has only been blacksmithing for about a year and boy is he into it. He has a personality that gets people excited about blacksmithing, because he is excited about blacksmithing. What a great trait to have as a teacher. He teaches a series of 4 classes. The first one is a two hour free introduction class. The other three go through a series techniques and projects. Jarom took a week long class from Brian Brazeal on tool making. To help offset the cost of the class he was able to get some funding from ABANA as well as Kickstarter. (If you are not familiar with Kickstarter it is a web site where people post projects that they are looking for funding for. In fact there is a young boy from American Fork that is trying to raise money to buy an anvil. Jarom taught this kid as well.) Jarom s smithy is about 10 x 10. He uses both a gas and coal forge. He works off an 80 pound Fisher and Norris Eagle anvil. He really enjoys the lack of ring from his anvil yet still has good rebound. (Our library has a great book all about the history of Anvils.) As many people that Jarom has taught in the short amount of time he has been blacksmithing he wanted to give a shout out to Micheal Miller- Imperiale (Mike was interviewed in Dec. 2013) who was instrumental in getting Jarom involved in blacksmithing. The first sentence of ABANA s mission statement is ABANA is dedicated to perpetuating the noble art of blacksmithing. Thanks Jarom for carrying on the tradition and for being a member of BFC, it s good to have you.
7 August / September 2014 Page 7 Anvil for sale I m planning on driving up to Spokane, Washington to buy a new anvil from Incandescent Ironworks in the next couple months. If you are interested in buying a new high quality anvil (142lb or 242lb) made in the USA at a reasonable price without the shipping cost contact me. hobblecreekforge@gmail.com or The Baby Rhino weighs 142 lb. Length is 16.7 ", width is 4.75 inches, and height is 9.6 inches. It has a 1" hardie hole and 5/8" pritchel hole. Hardness (HRC 52) extends through the full thickness of the anvil. $950. The Papa weighs 242 lb, and its dimensions are inches long, 5.25 inches wide and inches high. Step height is 0.75". Papa Rhino has a 1" hardie hole and a 5/8" pritchel hole. Hardness (HRC 52) extends through the full thickness of the anvil. $1250 Centering Jig At the last meeting I borrowed a video from our library and the demonstrator was using a centering jig. It seems every time I need to split a piece of metal my chisel veer s off the center line. This simple jig can be used to set up some reference marks to make more accurate cuts. Start with any size bar, maybe ½ x 1 x 8. Drill two holes for the pins. The pins should be 3/8 in diameter or larger. Set them 4 to 5 inches apart. Now be very accurate and drill a hole directly in the center of the two pins. This hole should be large enough for a transfer punch. When finding the center, the pins straddle each side of the workpiece and use the transfer punch to make reference marks every inch or so. Transfer punch hole We have a great library full of books and videos where you can find a lot of helpful information. Please be responsible and return any checked out material at the next meeting. If you cannot make it let the librarian know.
8 Page 8 Top of the Anvil Junkyard Steels and Heat Treating Chart Most of us scrounge around for metal to smith. The following chart was provided by Charles Freshman to help determine the type of metal we are picking off the ground. The second chart will help with the heat treating of our junk metal.
