1 DISTRICT 14-D PA LIONS DISTRICT 14D NEWSLETTER DETAILS June Thoughts From District Governor Deb Lions, Lionesses, and Leos, As I write this last message as your District Governor I can only say thank you from the bottom of my heart for giving me one last memory that will last a lifetime. What I am referring to is the unbelievably wonderful State Convention that our District hosted this year. All the Lions, Lionesses, and Leos of our District should be extremely proud of the work that their committee members put into this convention. Everyone gave all they had to make it a convention the State Lions will be talking about for a long time to come. Thank you to all the Lions, Lionesses and Leos that came out and supported the State Convention. I was very proud to be able to report that we had approximately 250 members of our District registered out of the 800 plus total registrations. Thank you also for all the clubs that sponsored baskets for the convention. Everyone in attendance thought the baskets were outstanding. I would also offer many thanks to the local clubs that manned the information table and to the Fabulous Cheeze Brothers and Sisters for fantastic hospitality music. Those in attendance at hospitality even had the treat of having International President Joe Preston get up and sing his song with the band. On Saturday of the convention there were so many good events to attend it was hard to get them all in. Our motivational speakers, Anne Beiler and Jay Blake were great and really recharged our Lion spirits to do even more good work and what a fun time we had learning about Disaster relief with the hilarious antics of the Christiana Clampetts! I don t think I ll ever look at a bald head in the same way again! (Ask someone who attended what I m talking about!) Saturday evening the fun and excitement kept coming as we had over 500 Lions, Lionesses, and Leos attend the international banquet. So many things happened at the banquet to be proud of including a very motivational keynote address by International President Joe Preston. We also honored a 70 year member of the Lancaster Lions for giving $100,000 to LCIF this past year and saw International President Joe induct a Leo to become a Lion, allowing 3 generations of one family to be Lions. Many of our District Lions also received Presidential recognition with awards and presidential certificates of appreciation. I could go on and on but I think you get the idea that we had a fabulous convention. Without all of your support from around our great District this would not have been possible, so once again I THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR EF- FORTS THIS YEAR and look forward to another great year with DGE Kathy Ridder leading the way! 3 MESSAGE FROM YOUR VDG-KATHY RIDDER GREETINGS ALL! It s the time in our Lion year when we think of the changing of the guards, so to speak; the installation of new officers & a new District Governor with some new faces on Cabinet, Lions taking the step to serve on another level, to be of service to the Lions Clubs of District 14D. These last 2 years have been a time of training & even though I have 19 years in as a Lion & 33 years as a Lioness, there is always something new to learn, or a different way to approach things in order to accomplish goals. The Lions organization is changing in many ways but we will maintain some of the old traditions, the glue that holds us together as we go into the future. Almost 20 years ago I was 1 st Lady when PDG Tom was DG. Our rolls are reversed & I wonder now how he managed to do the job, for he was still working, come to think of it, he s still working, & when you have your own business your boss is no less intent on getting a job done than if you worked for someone else. Through it all PDG Tom enjoyed his year, we made long time friends with his then Council as I am with my Council of Governors. He talks fondly of his serving the District & says it with pride, long before pride became a campaign. His personal thought when serving the District was, When making a decision, the basis of that decision should be, what is best for the District. I ve been hearing that statement for 20 years & though times are ever changing, What is best for District 14D, will serve me well. ALOHA!! DGE Kathy P.S. Thanks to all the Lions & Lioness who came out to the Convention, it was totally awesome!! Congrats to PDG Tom on receiving the 2 nd highest award in Lionism at the International Banquet on Saturday Night with International President Joe Preston as the speaker!
4 Notes and Hints from your Global Leadership Team As I write the 36 th article for our District newsletter I am reminded of some of the things our International President, Joe Preston from Arizona said at the State Convention. He informed us that we had hit a milestone during the year by going over 1.4 million members. As of May 23 rd we have 1,410,675 in 210 countries in the world. Worldwide membership is at a plus 30,555 since June 30, However, membership in the United States continues to drop each year including our own District that is down by 69 members while the rest of the world is gaining in members and starting new clubs. Reading an article by John Wm. McNaughton he tells the story of Sisyphus in Greek mythology. Sisyphus was condemned by Zeus, king of the gods, to roll an enchanted boulder to the top of a steep hill only to watch helpless as it toppled back down again and again, an eternity of useless efforts and unending frustration. Reflecting on this story, we should also think about the unmistakable message our members are sending to our Club and District leaders. In surveys that Lions Clubs International has been involved in we found that prospective members will volunteer their time, but do not want to join our Clubs due to meeting restraints. They want to serve in a capacity that gets something done. As our leaders continues in its attempt to roll the rock up the hill and not make changes, most of our members are absent at our social meetings and then drop out of Lions. Yet we have leaders who have assumed the role of Sisyphus and are willing to devote endless hours to keeping our clubs operating the same way they have for years and criticize our new members that attends service and fundraising projects for not attending the social meetings causing them to not wanting to a be a Lion. Many of today s Lions leaders have chosen to hitch our once great traditional wagon not to a star, but to the stone. However, unlike Sisyphus, Lions are still free to choose their fate. Members drops in so many of our Clubs, the consolidation of struggling clubs and those turning their Charter in are the lack of good men and women wanting to SERVE should be a wakeup call to our leaders. In Districts throughout the United States, membership and influence continue to decline, and yet, in most cases the emphasis in not on WE SERVE and looking for prospective members that want to volunteer their time. Instead, we expect them to join our clubs and adapt to the way we are continuing to run our clubs like we did many years ago. Lions in the United States and our District cannot blame a mythological god or goddess for our shortcomings. The blame is that we have many leaders that do not want to change and accept the newer ways that our younger members not only want but need. If the reason is that the fault is in ourselves, then the solution is within us as well. Seminars/workshops and training are available on the following dates in our District: June 7, 2015 at 2:30 PM before our District Cabinet Meeting at The Moveable Feast, 350 Highland Drive, Mountville, Pa Reservation are not required, just show up. 6 Nomination and Selection of District Melvin Jones Fellowship PURPOSE: To provide guidelines on the nomination and selection process of District 14-D for a Melvin Jones Fellowship to be presented to a Lion from each Region and a Lioness. GENERAL: 1. Each Lionistic year, District 14-D may present a Melvin Jones Fellowship to a Lion per Region along with a Lioness based on nominations from the Lions/Lioness clubs. 2. Only Clubs that contributed to the District as per the Contribution Schedule for LCIF, which is set each year by the District Governor, may submit a nominee for a District Melvin Jones Fellowship. All nominations must be board approved and signed by either the Club President or Secretary, preferably by the President where possible. 6. All nominations MUST be submitted on club stationery providing the qualifications of the nominee and sent to the LCIF Chairperson and a copy to the District Secretary by the established deadline. 7. Within a month after the deadline, the LCIF Chairperson must call a meeting and based on the received nominations select the Lion/Lioness from each region and Lioness clubs that will received a Melvin Jones Fellowship from District 14-D. The final decision, will be made by a Committee consisting of the District Governor, the last Past District Governor from each Region, Cabinet Secretary, and Cabinet Treasurer. Note: The process will be: The above Lions will assess those nominated in each Region, assigning 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc. positions to each nominee, the #1 position will receive the Melvin Jones Award.
