A Great Heritage A Great Future Dan D. Lines By Dr. Dan Darby, Pastor A special word of thanks to our Worship Team, our music leaders and choir, those who read, and all who took leadership roles in our Advent and Christmas worship services. You truly made them meaningful for all of us. What a fantastic congregation this congregation is! You are faithful in your support of the church through your time, talents, presence, gifts, prayers, and witness. You support our church staff and are constantly encouraging to us. Each of us has received a Christmas bonus from the church. Thank you! We had a good year in 2018, receiving 15 new members for the calendar year. These persons are all adults five couples and five single persons. Eight of the individuals come by profession of faith, one restored to active membership, two people coming from other denominations, and four transferring from other United Methodist churches. Any church our size would be very proud to have so many new persons join the church. Of course, 2018 has also been a very difficult year for us. Ten of our church members passed away, and 13 church members transferred out three moving their membership to other denominations, five transferring to other United Methodist Churches, and five withdrawing their membership. Our current membership is 223 professing members. Our charge for 2019 is to continue to reach out to our community with the Gospel and in mission. We are a very much alive congregation. We are involved, engaged, and inviting. That will not change, and we will build upon our work of the past to do even more for our community and the Kingdom of God. One staff change to announce to you. Lisa Lewis has requested to move from employed status to volunteer status. She will continue to bless us with her time and talents on Wednesday nights in working with the children and will continue to help our church with publicity and communications. She and Matt want to travel more on the weekends, so she is resigning as the children s Sunday School teacher. To address that need, we are expanding the role of our nursery workers, and making them our Sunday Children s Ministry Coordinators. Charlene Burnett and Cori Amszi will teach the Children s Sunday School class, coordinate the acolytes on Sundays, and staff the nursery on Sunday mornings. We appreciate them taking this expanded role. Pastor Dan

United Methodist Men The United Methodist Men held its monthly meeting on December 12, 2018 with 27 members and guests attending. After the opening prayer a wonderful breakfast was served. 4 SHARING OUR TALENTS Ephesians 4: 10b-13. He handed out gifts above and below, filled heaven with his gifts, filled earth with his gifts. He handed out gifts of apostle, prophet, evangelist, and pastor-teacher to train Christ s followers in skilled servant work, working within Christ s body, the church, until we re all moving rhythmically and easily with each other, efficient and graceful in response to God s Son, fully mature adults, fully developed within and without, fully alive like Christ. Each one of us have been blessed with God-given talents. As we share our gifts, not only are we giving a gift to others but we get to know each other better. God gave us this life and what we do with it is our gift to God. Please complete a membership profile in 2019 and return it to the church office. The information will be helpful for your assimilation into the church family. Rev. Melissa H Hinton Judy Swanson, Mya Blue, Monique Blue Holy Harmony members share their voices. L-R: Karen Countiss, Phyllis Palmer on flute, Marcy Campbell, Suzi Walters and accompanied by Paula Darby. TerrI Cook shares her quilting talents with CUMC Paula Darby & Andrew Main Chancel Choir
UMYF- The Matches Igniting the flame of Christ in everyone Who doesn t love December? We took the kids to The Christmas Ranch on FM 1725 on December 12 th, what a blast! Our Ugly Sweater Christmas party on the 19 th was a lot of fun. The winner was Carolyn Figueroa. Everyone got a pair of Christmas socks full of candy. One of the kids fit 14 big marshmallows in his mouth and still managed to say, Frosty the Snowman. The tree ornament fundraiser with a picture of our church to commemorate our 170 th anniversary is still going on for just $10 each. Reminder: We will not have youth on December 26 th or January 2 nd. Coming up in January is Hot Hearts on the th. The cost is $25. Mark your calendars for April 6 th. We will have a dinner theatre called The Case of the Missing Bride. Happy to serve, Carri Clark Assistant Youth Director Coldspring United Methodist Church Psalm 104:4 He makes his messengers winds, his minister a flaming fire. In Worship January 6, Epiphany I will preach a sermon entitled, The Mystery Revealed. It will be based on Ephesians 3:1-12. January 13, The Baptism of the Lord. My sermon for this special day in the life of the church is entitled, The Baptism of the Holy Ghost, based on Luke 3:15-17 and 21-23, and Acts 8: January 20, The Wedding at Cana, John 2:1-11. My sermon is entitled, How to Have a Happy Family. January 27, The Third Sunday after the Epiphany. My sermon is entitled, Finding Strength for Living, based on Luke 4:14-21 and Nehemiah 8:1-10.
King s Kidz will start the new year on Wednesday nights beginning January 9 th after school starts again. We will begin our Pets Curriculum where we will learn to unleash God s potential in our lives. Our lessons will cover turtle, gold fish, hermit crabs, and parakeets. I wonder what characteristics these pets have in common with characters in the Bible? During Sunday School, the children will be studying Healing Families specifically the Magi seeking a healer, Jesus heals a young woman and Jesus heals ten men with the Deep Blue Kids: At Home with God. As your Children s Ministry Coordinator for the last three and one-half years, I would like to express my gratitude to the entire congregation for the opportunity to serve you. I have enjoyed learning about Children s Ministry which was a wonderful change of pace from all my years teaching in a public school. A new phase of our church life calls for me to begin as a volunteer on Wednesday nights, as well as, contributing to the Communications Committee making your pre-service slides for worship and updating our social media. I trust that God will use this as a new growth in our church. Thank you all for supporting me through these years. Lisa Lewis, Children s Ministry
COLDSPRING UNITED METHODIST CHURCH Profit & Loss Budget vs. Actual January through November 2018 Church Leadership Training On Saturday, January 12, from 9:00 until noon, we will conduct a Church Leadership Training for all church officers, including members of all committees and work teams. We will work together to establish a vision for our ministry for the coming year, cross fertilizing with the different groups to enrich our ideas and potential. We will put the spotlight on some of our areas of ministry to educate each other about what we are doing in our various areas of ministry. I have asked one of our leaders to talk about how she conducts a meeting, so there will be some good tips and information for those of you who chair committees and work teams.
CUB SCOUT PACK 845 & BOY SCOUT TROOP 845 December was a busy month for all our Scouts and we are so proud of them for all they have been able to accomplish this year. Congratulations to all our Scouts and family members that helped work on our Pack float for the annual Coldspring Lighted Christmas Parade during Christmas on the Square. Our float Notes of Joy received 1 st place in our Division and we also brought home the big trophy for Best in Show for youth organizations. Thank you to everyone that helped make the evening such a success. The boys and their families had a great time showing off their float during the parade. On December 18, during our last Pack Meeting of the year, the Pack, the Troop, and the Girl Scouts joined together for a Christmas Celebration. We handed out awards, enjoyed snacks, and spent the evening together. At the end of the evening we even had a visitor from the North. It was a fun night and a great way to end the year. January will be a busy month as the boys continue their work to earn their badges of rank. They will also be readying their cars for the much-anticipated Pinewood Derby race at the end of the month.
