1 A Great Heritage A Great Future DAn D. Lines By Dr. Dan Darby, Pastor The highlight of February is St. Valentine s Day, the patron saint of love and romance. With that in mind, you will have to forgive if I use my space to honor the day with the following story to wish you a Happy Valentine s Day: Three handsome male dogs are walking down the street when they see a beautiful, enticing, female Poodle. The three male dogs fall all over themselves in an effort to be the one to reach her first, but end up arriving in front of her at the same time. The males are speechless before her beauty, slobbering on themselves and hoping for just a glance from her in return. Aware of her charms and her obvious effect on the three suitors, she decides to be kind and tells them, "The first one who can use the words 'liver' and 'cheese' together in an imaginative, intelligent sentence can go out with me." The sturdy, muscular black Lab speaks up quickly and says, "I love liver and cheese." "Oh, how childish," said the Poodle. "That shows no imagination or intelligence whatsoever." She turns to the tall, shiny Golden Retriever and says, "How well can you do?" "Um. I HATE liver and cheese," blurts the Golden Retriever. "My, my," said the Poodle. "I guess it's hopeless. That's just as dumb as the Lab's sentence." She then turns to the last of the three dogs and says, "How about you, little guy?" The last of the three, tiny in stature but big in fame and finesse, is the Taco Bell Chihuahua. He gives her a smile, a sly wink, turns to the Golden Retriever and the Lab and says... Liver alone. Cheese mine. Pastor Dan

4 In Worship February 3, The Onlys - Jeremiah said that he could not speak for the Lord because he was only a boy (Jeremiah 1:4-10). What is our call and commission from the Lord? Are we qualified to fulfill it? Do we have some excellent excuses? This will be a service of Holy Communion, and our Chancel Choir will sing in the 11:00 a.m. service, The Breaking of the Bread. February 10, Say Yes to God! - Isaiah was unable to serve the Lord because of being a sinner, but when he was cleansed by the fire of the Spirit, he said Yes to God s summons (Isaiah 6:1-8). Feb. 10 is also Scout Sunday, and the Scouts will be posting the colors and saying a word about scouting. They will also be serving spaghetti in the Fellowship Hall at noon, with take-out available after Sunday School. February 17, Finding Water in Times of Drought - Jeremiah prophesied great tragedy for the Jewish people, but told them how to find the water their souls would desperately need during the drought. We will look at Jeremiah 17:1-5, Psalm 1, Luke 6:20-23, and 1 Corinthians 15: February 24, Blessings Blossom from Tragedy - Great tragedies befell Joseph, the son of Jacob. But God used them to bring forth a blessing. He can do the same thing in our lives. Genesis 45:1-15. United Methodist Men The Coldspring United Methodist Men held it s monthly meeting on January 9, 2019 with 27 members and guests attending. Breakfast was served after the opening prayer. After breakfast the cooks were thanked and several members volunteered to help with the clean-up of the kitchen. The treasurer s report, scouting report and the special projects report were given. Jon Webb reported about the recent Court of Honor and showed a photograph of the two new Eagle Scouts together with three of the past Eagle Scouts from our troop. Twenty-four young men have now achieved the rank of Eagle Scout in our local troop. San Jacinto County Judge Fritz Faulkner was the featured speaker. Judge Faulkner was raised in our church and his mother, Hilde Faulkner, was a tireless worker in our church as well as, many county activities. 7 Pure Joy! The United Methodist Women met in January to plan our spring activities and to approve our budget for The budget was approved, so we thought you should know about some of our projects. We will continue to financially support ongoing organizations and special needs that might arise in our community both locally and non-locally. Local examples of missions are CASA, COCISD, our Church Youth and Christmas Families. Non-local examples include Costa Rica Mission, CRU, KAIROS, Methodist Children s Home and Central North District UMW, just to name a few. Some projects this year will include our annual garage sale, the Community Easter Egg Hunt, and wooden yard crosses for sale during Lent. We will continue support to our circles which include Busy Bodies/Prayer Blankets and Share the Bread. We will also host the annual Prayer Breakfast for all the churches in our community. We are still grieving over the passing of our sister, Audrey Russell, and will be working on making church bus seat bags as a memorial. Each bag sewn will have her initials on the bag as a reminder of a joyful, gracious lady of faith which is reflected in the title of our newsletter above. We will also feature a recipe of the month in the church newsletter that Audrey requested during our December meeting. As you can see, we are ready to work. What do we need? You! Every lady in our church or from our community is invited to join in with us to celebrate God s love. Our Prayer Blanket/Busy Body Circle meets on the 3rd Friday of the month at 10 AM in the Fellowship Hall. Please join us February 15 th and bring new ideas for projects. If you need an application, please see Anne Closs, Dale Martin or any member. Our lessons in February will cover lizards, turtles, goldfish, and hermit crabs. and Family Proverbs. Don t miss any adventure of the Deep Blue Kids! With Valentine s Day rapidly approaching, you may wonder why the children need Easter candy in February and March if Easter is in April? As soon as the retailers clear the Valentine s candy off the shelves, they will be replacing it with Easter candy. This year, the Prayer Blanket Circle group of UMW will be putting I wonder what characteristics these pets have in common with characters in the Bible? During Sunday School, the children will be studying Families Remember God, Family Traditions, A Family Faith, eggs together during their March 15 th meeting. Please consider donating this year by March 10, A collection basket will be on the Mission s Cabinet in the Fellowship Hall. Thank you for your support of the children s ministry. Lisa Lewis, Children s Ministry
9 Dear Friends- Please tell the congregation at Coldspring UMC how much we appreciate your ongoing support of Methodist Children s Home. Your gifts help us reach over 5,000 children, youth and families each year as we seek to offer hope through our Waco residential programs, our 13 Outreach Centers, and through our Transition Services which provides educational and emotional support for those young adults who leave us after graduation. As we head into our 129 th year of faithful service to the children of Texas and New Mexico, we ask for your prayers as we celebrate the legacy of hope left by our President/CEO, Mr. Tim Brown. After nearly 4 decades of service to our organization, Mr. Brown recently announced his retirement effective in June. Please call me or check out our website if you have questions about the search process and please keep us, our Board of Directors, and Mr. Brown in your prayers during this transition. God has great plans for MCH and we are glad that you are playing such an important role. Thanks again! Blessings, Don Rev. 10 CUB SCOUT PACK 845 & BOY SCOUT TROOP 845 January was a very busy month for all our scouts. They have all been doing their best and working hard toward their badges of rank. Our senior scouts, those in the Arrow of Light Den, have almost completely all they need to move on up to the Boy Scout Troop. It has been such a pleasure to watch them grow and accomplish so much. They have all become such great young men. The scouts main excitement for the month was our annual Pinewood Derby Race on the 26 th. All the boys and their families had a great time racing their cars. Our boys have such great imaginations! All the car designs were great to see. The race and car judging results will follow. In February we will be having our Blue and Gold Banquet on the 16 th beginning at 6 pm. This is a celebration of the Cub Scout program s birthday. This is also the evening in which we will be sending our Arrow of Light cubs up the Boy Scout Troop. We will also be having our annual Fellers Cake Auction. All are welcome and invited to attend. Troop 845 has been pursuing sending eight Scouts to Summer Camp in July to Camp Trevor Rees-Jones near Athens, Texas. There had been concern about having enough funds to even get the reservation fees made. However, Theresa Sheffield, the mother of Henry Thibideaux, a former Troop member and an Eagle Scout, wished to make a Memorial contribution to the Troop in the remembrance of Bill Burgess, a long time Troop Committee member and supporter of Scouting who passed away last year. Bill and Kathy Burgess son, Paul Burgess, is an Eagle Scout and former member of the Troop. Her generosity in honoring Bill will allow all eight of our Scouts in the Troop to attend Summer Camp with all their camp registration fees paid. The Troop is most appreciative of this gift and will now be able to start building its fund for camp in CUB SCOUT PACK 845 PINEWOOD DERBY RESULTS, January 26, 2019 PLACE TIGERS WOLVES BEARS 1 st Beau Jackson Roy King Koda-Ray Slater 2 nd Filip Duke Tracyn Wisted (Tied for 2 nd Place) rd Daemian Kvasnicka Cooper Moss (Tied for 2 nd Place) th Donovan Kvasnicka th Daniel Froelich th Mason Enloe PLACE ARROW OF LIGHT PLACE PACK FINALS 1st Clayton Taylor 1 st Koda-Ray Slater 2nd Nathan Holmon 2 nd Clayton Taylor 3rd Samson Blackstock 3 rd Roy King Judging - 4 th Arthur Thompson 4 th Beau Jackson BEST DESIGN PLACE ADULTS SIBLINGS 1 st Joe Wigginton Zackary Blackstock 2 nd Sean Taylor Annabelle Blackstock 3 rd Mary Despart Luke Jackson 4 th Joshua Blackstock Cadence Calderon 5 th Nicole Calderon Mark Hosea February 2019 Schedule February 5 Committee Meeting 6 pm & Den Meetings 7 pm February 7 Cub Scout Roundtable LDS Church Cleveland February 10 Scout Sunday 8:30 and 11 am Services February 12 Den Meetings 7 pm February 16 Blue and Gold Banquet 6 pm Scouting for Food begins February 19 Leader s Meeting 6 pm Den Meetings 7 pm February 26 Pack Meeting 7 pm Scouting for Food turn in Tracyn Wisted Daemian Kvasnicka Filip Duke Mason Enloe Roy King MOST CREATIVE MOST UNIQUE MOST COLORFUL BEST PAINT JOB MOST SUITABLY NAMED Nathan Holmon JUDGE S CHOICE Cooper Moss February Birthdays February 6 Jason Terry February 15 Nicole Calderon February 15 Christopher Pulk February 18 Jonathan Webb February 22 Russell Jowell Jr February 22 Russell Jowell Sr February 26 Robert Trapp
