A Great Heritage A Great Future Dan D. Lines By Dr. Dan Darby Easter is the center of the Christian faith. The Resurrection is the lens that brings all the other Christian beliefs and doctrines into focus. Without the Resurrection, Christmas would be just another fairytale; the crucifixion just another travesty of justice. Holy Week is a story of a man bravely facing the end of his life. It is not until that man is raised from the dead that we realize that God was saving the world through the sacrifice of the Son of God on the cross. God encountered Death, and there was a mighty struggle. It seemed that Death had triumphed, but then there was an empty tomb. We look into the Darkness of an empty tomb and see the Light. That Light is the gift of eternal life to Christ our Savior, and, consequently, to all who hope in him. You have something to celebrate this Easter. It is the triumph of God. It is your salvation. It is that God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should have everlasting life. Easter Sunday Schedule What better time than Easter Sunday to invite a friend, a neighbor, or a family member to church. They will never be more receptive to your invitation. Here is our plan for Easter Sunday: 7:00 a.m. Community Easter Sunrise Service. Rev. James Smith, pastor of Shepherd United Methodist Church will be preaching, and Rev. Jason Copes will be leading in prayer. We will be meeting in the outdoor worship area. 7:45 a.m. Easter Breakfast in the Fellowship Hall. 8:30 a.m. Easter Worship. Pastor Dan will be preaching the Easter Sermon from Mark 16:1-8 entitled, A Go- Ahead God 9:45 a.m. Easter Egg Hunt for all Ages. Yes, we are inviting even the Senior Adults to become children again and hunt for Easter Eggs! If picking stuff up off the ground is no longer your forte just find a child and partner with them. One for you, and one for me! We will be gathering in the gym for a devotional before going on the great quest. The youth will be hiding the eggs following the first service. 11:00 a.m. Easter Worship. The choir will sing Crown Him the Lord of Life, and Pastor Dan will preach on Mark 16:1-8, A Go-Ahead God The Sundays Following Easter April 8, John 20:19-31, Faith Without Sight April 15, Luke 24:35-48, The Hands of Jesus. We will also be sending our Costa Rica Mission Team off on their trip with a word of prayer. April 22, Pastor Dan and the mission team will be returning from Costa Rica that day, so you will have a guest preacher. Dr. E. B. Beasley will be preaching. E. B. has served as pastor at FUMC, Humble; FUMC, Dayton; and many other distinguished pulpits in the Texas Annual Conference. He and Pastor Dan have been friends throughout their careers, so don t believe everything he says about your preacher. Dan and E.B. were also part of the same Doctor of Ministry program back in the 1990 s. April 29, John 15:1-17, Sappy Christians -This Sunday, we will be honoring Child and Adult Abuse Awareness Sunday and receiving an offering in support of local efforts of San Jacinto County Child Protective Services.
Missions Ministry April 2018 Newsletter April is Child Abuse Awareness Month Thousands of people will wear blue, the official color of prevention, to show their support for children. A Love Offering will be requested to support the local CPS and CASA organizations. Prayer Calendar for Costa Rica Mission Trip The Costa Rica mission trip is April Five missionaries from UMC will be going on the trip Dan Darby, Paula Darby, Linda Winkelman, Georgia Lapp and Judy Swanson. 3 UNITED METHODIST MEN The Coldspring United Methodist Men held its monthly breakfast on March 14, 2018 with 32 members and guests attending. Don Freel gave the opening prayer. Breakfast was served. After breakfast the cooks where thanked for the great meal. The treasurer s report was presented by Gene Pavey. Jon Webb gave the scouting report. Jon reported on the recent Blue & Gold Banquet as well as the Eagle Scout projects currently being worked on by two of the Boy Scouts. Robert Biba gave the ramp/special project report. Robert reported that he had a request for a wheel chair ramp and landing and he gave an estimate of the cost. A Motion was made, seconded and approved to expend the funds to build the ramp. Dennis Raymond s funeral was mentioned in the special prayer concerns. Wayne Wofford was gracious to act as a last-minute speaker. Wayne spoke about the Bugles Across America Organization. By congressional act a deceased veteran is entitled to have two uniformed Military personnel perform the Flag Folding Ceremony at his or her funeral and have taps played. Most of the time taps was played by recorded music. A need was seen, so in the year 2000, Bugles Across America was formed A member of this organization will play taps with a musical instrument at a Veteran s funeral. There are over 4,000 members of Bugles Across America. Wayne has been a part of this organization for several years and plays at funerals several times each year. Wayne said that the V.A. estimates that over the next seven years 500,000 Veterans will die each year. Wayne closed his talk by reading the lyrics to TAPS. Joe Dunn will be moving to Frisco. He has been a valuable member of the Methodist Men over the years and for our church. We will miss his sense of humor as well as all the help that he does for our group. The meeting was closed with a prayer. The next meeting is April 11. We hope to see you there. Robert H. Trapp-President UMM UMW The United Methodist Women will meet April 5th at 5:30. It will be a salad supper. Bring whatever salad you want. Bread will be provided. We will be discussing the garage sale. All women in the church are invited. It is spring cleaning time! Remember to save your give away items for the yearly garage sale the United Methodist Women and United Methodist Men will be having on April 28th. If you have items to be picked up, call the church office or Anne Closs Dear Friends, Thank you for the many calls & cards with concern for my health. I wanted to thank the UMW group for the beautiful prayer blanket. I love it. & took it with me to my first Chemo treatment. Your many many prayers are much appreciated. I know they work. Keep them coming. Hope to be A-OK in a few months. I m so thankful for God s love & protection. Sincerely, Barbra Creel. Dear Church Family, Our family would like to thank you for all your prayers and love that has been given to Dennis and our family in the last year and at his death. Everyone has been such a blessing to us. We will never forget all your kindness. Sincerely, Dennis Raymond Family
REVIVAL "The Master's Storyteller" Come be a part of a great revival- the Master's Storyteller! May right here at CUMC. We will start the Revival Sunday morning and finish up Wednesday night. Rev. Wesley Putnam has been a full-time evangelist since A musician, dramatist and storyteller, his ministry crosses denominational and demographic lines. Most of all, he s a believer who wants to glorify God and build up the Kingdom. Wesley is involved in the church. He has served as president and executive director of the National Association of United Methodist Evangelists. He has also been active as a representative on the Council of Evangelism of the South-Central Jurisdiction. Wesley has been honored by his peers in receiving the Philip Award, and the Denman award for his work in evangelism. Wesley is a family man. He and his wife, Felicia, live in Bedford, Texas. Their three adult sons are actively involved in the Church, too. When not on the road, you can usually find Wes doting over his grandchildren. Wesley Putnam Ministries is hard to define. It s a unique blend of music, drama and children s outreach combined with a good measure of lively, relevant preaching. It s a fresh approach to renewal that can bring newness to your church. His ministry includes revivals, concerts, youth camps and retreats aimed at deepening individual commitment, strengthening the family and equipping local congregations for service in the world. Wes brings the Word alive with his anointed preaching. His messages overflow with warmth and humor, but they re not candy-coated. His relevant approach connects with the struggles that all people share. Preaching is the communication of the heart of God to those He loves. The message God has burned into the heart of Wesley Putnam is his passion. He proclaims the Good News with simplicity and clarity. You will never walk away without examining your relationship with God and with those around you. You hear a message of hope. You go home believing that God is able to restore broken relationships and give the wonderful gift of new beginnings. In town after town there are testimonies of God s power to change us.
UMYF- The Matches Igniting the flame of Christ in everyone The Lenten Season had everyone listening. We had great talks and thoughts in Sunday School. We will resume our study of God s Covenants with the Earth and Humanity. A recap of the month: We went to WinterJam on the fourth and it was a great time (except for me hitting a clearance bar), sorry trustees. Our car wash on St. Paddy s day raised $427! We had a fun time in Huntsville eating pizza, playing at the park and watching A Wrinkle in Time. Things to look forward to: Easter Egg Hunt on April 1 st at 9:45 am. We have a mission project on the 14 th for a Hurricane Harvey victim. And get ready to be entertained on the 15 th with our spaghetti lunch and TALENT show! Starting right after the second service. I m happy to announce a contemperary service planned for April 29 th at 6 pm in the fellowship hall, put together by Trent Graves. Happy to serve, Carri Clark Assistant Youth Director Coldspring United Methodist Church Psalm 104:4 He makes his messengers winds, his minister a flaming fire.
King s Kidz have been learning about the incredible obedience, unbelieveable commitment, amazing love, and awesome power that Jesus displays to us on the journey to the cross as a part of our Wednesday night program. During April the King s Kidz will be looking at the early Christian church and When I Grow Up curriculum. For example - Police Officer You can grow up to protect others; Nehemiah 4, Nehemiah Protects the People Firefighter You can grow up to rescue and care for others; Genesis 14:8-24, Abram Rescues Lot Doctor You can grow up to be a healer; and Mark 5:21-43, Jesus Heals a Woman and a sick girl. King s Kidz will be beginning our study of the unit Go and Tell during Sunday School in April. We will be discovering an empty tomb, looking at how Paul changes, how Paul escapes, looking at the growth of the early church, and the selection of Timothy. Don t miss any fantastic adventures with the Deep Blue Kids! King s Kidz will have a fun time again on April 1 st on Easter Sunday at our annual Easter Egg Hunt. It will kick off at 9:45 in the Gym. The Easter Egg Hunt is free and for all ages, so come out, bring your basket, and be a part of the fun! Thank you to everyone that donated plastic eggs and candy. King s Kidz would also like to thank United Methodist Women Busy Bodies and UMYF The Matches for volunteering to stuff plastic eggs. The talent show and spaghetti luncheon will be April 15 th in the fellowship hall at noon. This will be a fundraiser for summer camp. If you would like to participate, please see Lisa Lewis. Save the date for Lakeview United Methodist Summer Camp June 17-22, Each camper is required to register online at Elementary camp is for 8-10 year olds. If you have questions, please see Lisa Lewis. 7 CUB SCOUT PACK 845 & BOY SCOUT TROOP 845 We hope all our Scouts and their families enjoyed a safe and relaxing Spring Break. Our Scouts are working hard to earn their Badges of rank and this scouting year is moving along quickly. We are proud of all that they have accomplished this year and we want to thank all that have supported them along their scouting path. February 24 the Pack enjoyed a trip to the Ellen Trout Zoo in Lufkin. They beat the rain and had lots of fun seeing all the animals and playing on the playground located there. Our Scouting for food drive during the month of February yielded about 125 lbs of food for Care Share. On March 24 three of our Scouts and their families enjoyed a hike at the Big Creek Scenic Area. We hiked about 2 miles and had a snack along the way. The boys saw lots of interesting things and did very well along the way. At the end of the hike we took the opportunity to help out and picked up some trash around the parking lot. The night of March 24 was the Awards Banquet for our Scouting district. We enjoyed a dinner of brisket and sausage, beans, and potato salad. About 45 Scouters from the district were able to attend. Our award winners for Pack 845 include: Paul Calderon Cubmaster s Key Unsung Heroes The Tanner Family and Casondra Voyles Notable Service Nicole Calderon, Stacey Poko, Felicia Burks, and Jonathan Hosea Spark Plug Award Mary Despart Award winners for the Troop include: Unsung Hero Erik Benestante Spark Plug Award Carl Seigfried April 3 - April 10 - April 14 - April 17 - April 2018 Schedule Committee Meeting 6 pm Den Meetings 7 pm Den Meetings 7 pm Possible trip to Little Beakers TBA Leader s Meeting 6 pm Den Meetings 7 pm April Cub Family STEM Camp SSR Woodville April 24 - Pack Meeting 7 pm April Birthdays April 13 - Rowdy Sosa
