All of us attend SU so when semester break fnally arrved Dan Hubly, Mke Monahan and I clmbed nto a 960 convertble Volkswagon drven by Mark McKnley. We left Chenoa at 3 30 p.m. and arrved worn out and cold at John's apartment at 2:30 a.m. Thursday. Whle n Mnneapols for our bref stay we toured John s school, a professonal buaness nsttute, and were kept busy wth varous other actvtes over the weekend. Then on Saturday nght, the day before we had ntended to leave, the Volkswagon broke down and t looked as f t would take qute a few days to get t runnng agan. So on Sunday mornng Mke and I bd farewell to our fne frends n Mnneapols and set out to htch-hke back to Pper Cty. The temperature was wanner then t had been all week, n fact t reached a hgh of 8 depees n Mnneapols that day. We stood along the entrance ramp to nterstate 94 and quckly got our frst rde, whch took us all the way nto Wsconsn. It ddn't take long for us to team the rules of htch-hkng for wthn four hours we were stopped by three Wsconsn polce, all of whom told us the proper way to htch-hke. The weather was bearable and traffc was good, so by dark we arrved n Black Rver Falls, whch s roughly one-quarter of the way. At that pont I called my parents and nformed them that may not make t home by Monday, because I was htch-hkng. I suppose you oould say that they were mdly surprsed. Anyway we soon got a rde to Madson from an army sergeant on hs way to Great Lakes. By the tme we arrved just outsde Madson, Wsconsn, t was 0 p.m. and the temperature had fallen well below aero. Traffc was lght and Mke and I were both feelng uncomfortably cold and rather down when we had nog gotten a rde by md-nght. Then a young man drvng a pck-up truck came by and told us to get n f we wanted a rde to Rockford. That was exactly what we needed and he drove us nto Rockford at :30 a.m. where we soon got a motel for the nght. Our frst rde Monday mornng came from a state polceman who took us to U.S. 5 where he sad we'd have a better chance of fndng a rde. Sure enough a few mnutes later a sem-truck drver p v e us a rde all the way to Rochelle,. However, here we ran nto dffculty as we stood along the hghway n own for about 45 mnutes tryng to thumb a rde. Soon a town polceman pulled up and sad to get n and he'd gve us a rde out of town. And that exactly s what he dd. He dumped us off along 5 and fve mles south of Rochelle and seven mles from the next town. The emperature wax just below freezng and a wnd had come up that went rght through our heavy clothes. We wated desperately for over two hours before we fnally decded to walk the seven mles to the next town. That was the low pont of our whole trp. Before we had walked a mle we got our next rde all the way to Peru. It ddn't take long to get from there to El Paso and from El Paso we soon arrved n down-town Chatsworth. At that pont I sad good-bye to Mke Monahan as he walked tbs few blocks left to hs home. I was then fortunate enough to run nto my neghbor, Mrs. McKee, who gave me a rde to my doorstep. So 450 mles, 8 rdes and 2 hours on the road later I arrved safely at home. And that was an experence I m sure to remember for a long tme to come. 11 A w ard Arends Dstngushed Servce M edal In reooyton of hs "leadershp and contrbuton to our harng a far and sound Selectve Servce Law and to the successful operatons of the Selectve Servce System, Dr. Curts W. Tarr, drector of the Selectve Servce System, presented the agency's Gold Medal for Dstngushed Servce to Conyemman Lesle C. Arends, of Melvn. The ceremones were held last week n Arends Rayburn Buldng offce facng the Captal After some prelmnary remarks concernng the nature of the award and Mr. Arends' legslatve contrbuton, Dr. Tarr pnned the medal on the Congressman and read the offcal Dstngushed Servce Award Ctaton. The Ctaton referred to Contressman Arends' "art of statecraft" and read n part: "In a very real way, the Presdent's program for y ea ter equty n the Selectve Servce process has depended upon your personal support and that whch you were able to muster among your colleagues." Expressng hs apprecaton for ths recoytton, Mr. Arends responded that "of all the measures consdered by our Armed Servces Commttee the draft law s one of the most mportant, most dffcult to wrte and, to me, the most dstasteful. I do not lke compulson. The draft law s repuyant to our Amercan way of lfe, but we have had no alternatve n meetng our manpower needs to nsure our country's safety." ' I was pleased to have had a part n ntatng the Preadent's program for phasng out the draft and establshng an all-volunteer mltary force. We hope t wll prove successful. The substantal ncrease n pay and allowances to make the mltary servce more attractve has added 2.3 bllon to our defense budget. It wll be worth the prce f we can thereby obtan qualfed volunteers. Whle we try to have a draft law that s far and equtable, try as we may, we cannot wrte a perfect law. Oglve Requests Congress Take Acton To Halt Dock Gov. Rchard B. Oglve asked Conyess Monday to take swft acton to halt what he termed "crpplng dock strkes." In a statement to be fled wth the Senate Labor and Publc Welfare Commttee, Oglve called for "senous consderaton and prompt acton" on House Jont Resoluton 025. The governor noted that whle the resoluton apples only to the West Coast dock strke, smlar leyslaton may be requred n the event that the Gulf Coast s struck agan Feb. 4. An 80-day coolng-off perod n the Gulf strke wll expre that day. Oglve s statement noted: "If the strke resumes, t wll have an mmedate and detrmental mpact n Illnos partcularly upon farm gran prces. "There s lttle doubt but that dock strkes have a drect effect upon export prces. We n Illnos learned ths lesson anew durng the recent Gulf Coast strke." Oglve's testmony noted that com prces, for example, fell to 90 cents a bushel durng the strke, and recovered to $.05 when the ports reopened. Hs statement contnued: "Dock strkes, whether on the Gulf or West coasts, have a dramatc mpact on many people who share no part n the dspute and who are far removed from the ports themselves. Whle I beleve frmly n the collectve barganng process, legslaton s needed to termnate crpplng dock strkes whch occur when collectve barganng breaks down and a natonal emergency exsts." In November, when Oglve won the assurance of Attorney General John Mtchell that the coolng off perod would be ordered, Oglve estmated the losses to Illnos farmers alone at $40 mllon. That loss, he explaned, s only part of the long-term damage, because foregn buyers of Illnos products wll seek permanent supplers elsewhere unless Amercan delvery can be assured Oglve has worked closely wth Illnos farm groups, ncludng the Illnos Agrcultural Assocaton, to present to the Presdent the urgent need of farmers to be able to move ther products Illnos s thy leadng exportng state of farm products and thrd n the exportng of manufactured goods Last week Oglve telegraphed both the Presdent and the Federal Medaton and Conclaton Servce offerng hs assstance n seekng a settlement of the Gulf Coast strkes. Be sure to punch a few dran holes n the bottom f the contaner has no dranage. Place the contaner n the brghtest locaton n your home. A sunny wndow sll, glassed n porch, pato door, or large south wndow are the best places snce plants requre lots of sun. You can obtan ready-to-use pottng sol that s free of plant dseases and weeds from your local garden center. Your cprden dealer can also suggest a low-analyss water soluble fertlzer. Parsley takes about 0- weeks but leaves can be cut for cprnsh for a long perod of tme. It does well n small, shallow contaners. Chves grows faster than parsley (8-0 weeks) and can be clpped for ^m shes for a long perod of tme. WINDBREAKS MEAN EASY WINTERS A farmstead wndbreak can subdue wntry blasts and make for easy wnters. A stnp of evergreens on the north and west tdes of the farmstead area wll reduce btter northwest wnds to a breeze, he says. At the same tme the trees wll trap blowng snow away from drves and doorways. Norway spruce and Douglas fr, adapted wdely to Illnos sols, develop denser folage and attan 7-eater heght than other ew ryeens, partcularly on prare sols. Pnes self prune at an earler age, have more open folage, and under average condtons, grow to a stubby heght and become flat-topped. Three rows wth a 5-foot spacng n and between rows offer the most protecton for the area nvolved. In plannng the strp s locaton, you can expect the wndbreak to gve notceable protecton leeward a dstance equal to ten tmes the wndbreak heght. To nsure southerly breezes wll be coolng n the summer, the strp should be located at least 50 feet a way from areas and buldngs n summer use An addtonal advantage of a wndbreak s savngs n feed and fuel hlls when lvestock s on the farm. ECONOMIST PRESENTS SWINE BREEDING HERD IMPROVEMENT METHODS Any lvestock producer wth a breedng herd operaton must constantly be on the watch for better stock to mprove hs herd, R. P. Kesler, Unversty of Illnos agrcultural economst, told the pork producers at the Swne Semnar, January 25 n Pontac. He lsted three optons the hog producers should use to acqure replacement breedng anmals for ther breedng herds: () Select replacement pts from your own herd. (2) Buy replacement ^lts from a seed-stock producer, a pure bred breeder, or another commercal producer. (3) Lease replacement rplts usng one of the sow-leasng contracts, wdely avalable today. The evaluaton of these dfferent strateges requres a cost estmate of provdng replacement anmals and evaluatng the genetc performance of the sow herd obtaned from dfferent sources, Kesler sad. For example, a leasng contract may offer the producer the benefts of a superor genetc lne. Or, the producer has the opton of developng superor genetc materal wthn hs own breedng herd In one nstance the genetc materal may be acqured through the lease contract In the other, genetc materal may be acqured through the efforst and costs assocated wth boar selecton, (pt selecton and offsprng testng. If genetc performance wth the sow herd under all three optons was equal, t would clearly be to the commercal hog producer s advantage to rase hs own breedng anmals, Kesler noted. When commercal producers obtan genetc materal through leasng the breedng herd, the cost per sow over an eght year perod would be hgher-about $89 or slghtly less than $2 per ltter. He sad ths dfference mght be off set by an ncrease n feed effcency, an ncrease n pgs weaned per ltter, or an ncrease n market prce due to a hgher grade and yeld of anmals marketed. The fnal decson must be made on the bass of the dfferental n cost and the C.I.P.S. Sets $5 4 Mllon O n 7 2 Plans; Includes Envronment Control Equpment Central Illnos Publc Servce Co plans expendtures of more than $54,000,000 on new constructon, envronmental control equpment and replacement of facltes durng 972, accordng to an announcement by K E. Bowen, presdent of CIPS We must contnually plan ahead and buld ahead to make sure our customers have plenty of power as they need t, Bowen stated Tradtonally, customer requrements double every 0 years, but forecasts ndcate that ths rato s on the ncrease. Bowen sad the planned expendture s vtally necessary to mantan our servce relablty, meet the constantly ncreasng requrements of our customers and move ahead n helpng to clean up the envronment. Of the total allocaton, more than $48,000,000 wll be expended for electrc facltes, and more than $5,000,000 for natural gas facltes. Announcement of ths year's program was made by Bowen n connecton wth CIPS observance of Natonal Electrcal Week, Feb. 6-2, when the electrc ndustry focuses attenton on the contrbutons of electrcty to the Amercan economy and way of bfe. The 972 constructon program wll further strengthen the relablty of servce to CIPS customers, as well asapve added support to the company s entre transmsson and dstrbuton system through constructon of new and larger power lnes and substatons. At the end of 97 the utlty was servng probably 7ns from mproved genetc materal. Kesler advsed that producers consder the tme, efforts, and sklls requred to develop superor genetc materal n ther own herd as compared wth the purchase of the genetc materal through the leasng route or by buyng replacement glts from producers wth proven seed stock.
