1 POST GAZETTE The American Legion Post 7 The American Legion Auxiliary Unit 7 Volume 87, Issue 9 September 2016 Commander David Griffith Greetings Fellow Legionnaires, Starting at September s meeting, I plan to have our WWII members speak about their time in service and the job they did. Our first speaker will be Murray Price. Mr. Price was a WWII Bomber Pilot We are planning a Fund Raiser in October. I will have more details at our September meeting. There has been discussions about changing our meeting time. We will continue to meet at our regular time (which is 7pm) on the first Saturday for the rest of the year. Changes in the meeting time will be sent out in the newsletter and by . We will have more on this later. Fall Conference is here. Just Contact me to let me know. I will verify payment. Be patient, it takes about a month or two for the information to trickle up stream. Contact me and let me know the month and day. We need your help! Mrs. Jesse Graham is an 81 year old Korean War widow who lives in a low income community in Greenville, South Carolina. Mrs. Graham's house is completely dilapidated and in need of desperate repair. She has had no air conditioning or heat for the past three years. And, given our hotter than average temperatures this summer, she is doing all she can to survive. There are holes in the bathroom floor and the fixtures are so worn and antiquated that the faucets continuously run. The front porch and steps are sagging beyond repair and need to be replaced as they are literally falling off of the house. Additionally, every single window and door on her home also needs to be replaced. Truly, it is a very sad situation. Advocates for Mrs. Graham have appealed to the Community Development Service of Greenville for assistance in fixing and rehabilitating her home. They were informed that Mrs. Graham does indeed qualify for assistance. However, there is one small problem. There is a lien in the amount of $2,600 on the house. The lien disqualifies her from the program. We, The American Legion Department of South Carolina, are asking for your assistance in the effort to raise $2,600 for Mrs. Graham. 2 Auxiliary News On August 6, 2016, the officers Jean Testruth, Linda Roemer, Mary Hazelton, Doris Frye and myself were installed by our Parliamentarian, Mary Hazelton. That was the first line of business. Thank you, Mary. Other members present were Doris Reynolds, Evelyn Moss and Dot Tunstall We had a member from the North August unit, Margaret Parker and her daughter, Meg Causey from Greenville, visit our meeting. We hope they will also be able to attend our September meeting. We are still taking orders for Stanley Products. If you are interested and need a catalog, please contact me by phone. This is one of the unit s fundraisers along with our No Sale Yard Sale donations of $25 per member or whatever the member can afford. Treasurer, Linda Roemer, is accepting checks for your 2017 membership dues. Senior members are still $30 and Juniors stayed the same at $5.00. When our treasurer receives your payment, your membership card will be mailed to you by our Sr. Vice President / Membership Chairman, Jean Testruth. Congratulations to Commander David Griffith and ALA Linda Griffith on their 50th wedding anniversary on August 11, If you know of any Legionnaire or Auxiliary members who are ill or have had a death in their family, please call me so I can inform our Auxiliary Chaplain, Marge Carter, to send them a card. Also, if you need help with anything, please feel free to call me. Our next meeting will be on Saturday, September 10, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. We will meet again in the Green Room at Flight Deck in Lexington for our business meeting and lunch afterwards. 5 FYI Food, Fun and Baseball: Blowfish Baseball continues the tradition of honoring our military heroes. Tickets, seats, food and drink. One military family present will be selected to throw the ceremonial first pitch. For more information, go to Starting in 2017, the American Legion Legacy Scholarship Fund will expand to include children of post 9/11 veterans with a 50% or higher disability rating. November 5th: SC Run For The Fallen kicks off from Liberty Square at 0600 and will finish at the SC State House Sunday the 6th. Each mile of the run is dedicated to a SC Fallen Hero. The run team will stop at every marker, present an American flag and a biographical card in honor of every fallen service member in an effort to create a 120 mile memorial trail through SC. November 3pm (1500): Lexington County Veterans Parade Dot and Marge Carter folded flags to give to the departing sailors. Dieter Klose, Ernie Hall, Nila Ballentine, Bob and Linda Roemer along with their German exchange student, Lara Haacks and Dot Tunstall attended the event. Dot and some volunteers made 105 neck pillows which were distributed to the departing sailors. Contact Dot for further information at She has also been working on more neck pillows to hand out but needs some help to purchase the polyfil stuffing. A 10lb package cost $19.97 at Walmart. Veterans Transportation Services : From Lexington.. Contact Mr. Steven Torres (6398) for info and reservation. We are still in need of volunteers for driving the van to take veterans to the VA and back to their home. 11th annual Legacy Run left Indy on the 21st of August. They will travel 1,300 miles through 7 states to raise funds for children of fallen service members and disabled veterans. 5
