Dear Pastor Mark and Church family, Thank you for coming to Jean s funeral hours, all support, visits, cards, and prayers during this time. Love, Mike, Mary & Brian Livingston Good morning, my friends! Words cannot express my gratitude for you, your team, and the investment you made in our community. Through the summer, we were blessed with over 2000 volunteers who gave their time and resources to the people of our area. Your kindness, compassion, and love were evident, and I can assure you that your efforts are still making a difference! It can be difficult to measure the results of a mission trip even here at the mission center. Sometimes we wonder if we could have done more. Sometimes we wonder what more we need to do. But, at the end of the day, I hope that all of us can lay our heads down at night and simply say, "Lord, I worshiped you with my whole life today. Help me do it again tomorrow!" Thank you for serving with us this summer. Our prayer is that you, your group, and your church are continuing this mission back at home! We would consider it an honor and privilege to serve with your team again in the future. Kevin Rogers Director, Big Creek Missions Thank you to everyone for your prayers. Michael and Debby Hill (Terry Hill s Brother)
2 Dear members and friends of St. John s: At a church Thanksgiving party, the evening ended with a fellowship circle and each participant was asked to say what he or she was especially thankful for. Many of the usual blessings were mentioned, but a shy, little girl paused and said, "Oh, I'm just thankful that I am thankful." When we gather with family and friends for our Thanksgiving dinners, we won t be shy about filling our plates with turkey and dressing, sweet potatoes, green bean casserole and cranberry sauce. My personal favorite is the broccoli salad. There will be no hesitation in sharing reasons to be thankful, not the least of which is the freedom to have fellowship and worship like the Pilgrims. What does it feel like to be thankful? For me, I feel all happy inside and at peace. Thankfulness has a way of releasing and replacing sadness, frustration and fear. How does it feel to be thankful? On crosswalk.com Nancy DeMoss-Wolgemuth says, Be thankful. God has commanded it for our good and for God s glory. God s command to be thankful is not the threatening demand of a tyrant. Rather, it is the invitation of a lifetime the opportunity to draw near to Him at any moment of the day. John Piper says, Genuine thankfulness is an act of the heart s affections, not an act of the lips muscles. Andrew Murray says, "Let us thank God heartily as often as we pray that we have God s Spirit in us to teach us to pray. Thanksgiving will draw our hearts out to God and keep us engaged with God; it will take our attention from ourselves and give the Spirit room in our hearts." And Priscilla Shirer says, When we choose thankful prayer over wallowing in anxiety and worry, we are demonstrating an unwavering trust in God. To summarize, thankfulness means feeling happy inside and at peace, an invitation to draw near to God at any moment, acting on the heart s affections, gives the Spirit room in our hearts and demonstrates an unwavering trust in God. Whenever we connect with God and to each other in a spirit of thankfulness all these good things happen and so much more. So when we make our fellowship circles on Thanksgiving Day and join hands, let s pray with the wisdom of that little girl and just be thankful for being thankful. In Christ s love and thankfulness for all of you, Rev. Mark
3 Chucky If you re lookin to widen your fellowship circles on Thanksgiving Day, Chester and me will be glad to oblige. Here are a few instructions for the care and maintenance of church mice: We like fruits, seeds and grains, so pass the cranberry sauce and stuffing. We are omnivores and eat plants and meat. We ll have the white and the dark meat. Green bean casserole is our favorite, especially with the french-fried onions on top. Cheetos make great appetizers! The Macy s Parade is our favorite, especially when the Mighty Mouse balloon comes on. If you watch football, don t put on the Detroit Lions. They re related to kitties. Pumpkin pie is the best. We always have a little with our whipped cream. If you need help with the leftovers, WE LL BE BAAAACK! We re kind of hard to see, so don t leave us out of the prayer circle. Church mice always give thanks to the Lord. Mission and Outreach is offering Thanksgiving boxes for 10 families in need this Thanksgiving. The boxes will include: a frozen (10-12lb.) turkey, boxed dressing and potatoes, canned green beans, corn and cranberry sauce, rolls and a frozen pumpkin pie. We will need to know the names and phone numbers of the families receiving the boxes by November 4th. These families can be either in the congregation or someone a member knows is in need. Call the church to submit your request and give the name and phone number of the family. Thanksgiving box pick-up will be at the church between 2pm and 4pm on Sunday, November 11th. Mission and Outreach, Dr. Owen Lee, Susan Jansheski and Karen O'Hare AFTERNOON CIRCLE The Afternoon Circle will hold their annual Thank Offering Service on Wednesday, Nov. 7, at 1:00 p.m. in the Meeting Room. Members are reminded to bring their Thank Offering jars for dedication. Mrs. Vicky Davis and Mrs. Bea Pursley will provide the refreshments. Our December 5 th, meeting will include a catered dinner (chicken & noodles, mashed potatoes, croissant, and salad) by Susie s Bistro and Bakery (downtown Newark). The meal will cost $10.95 per person. We will need reservations before the end of November. Please call either Donna Hewitt ( ) or Dorothy Turdo ( ) by November 23, with your RSVP. Thank you.
4 Licking Memorial Hospital Development Council announces the 2018 Recipient of The Mary Jane McDonald Building a Healthier Community Award Fostering Further Award Ceremonies - Friday, Nov. 2, 2018 The following is the second in a series of articles explaining the work of the Fostering Further organization with whom St. John s is a partner. A Brief Description of Current Programs and Activities: At Fostering Further, we divide our programs and activities into 4 main categories: - Children in foster care - Foster families - Foster caseworkers - Youth who have emancipated from foster care For the children of foster care, our Grant a Wish program has sponsored well over 100 activities, camps, and trips for local foster youth in the last two years. In addition, we collect backpacks, school supplies, and camp supplies for foster youth. We also work with Newark Nazarene Church to host a Christmas party for foster kids each December. For local foster families, we work with area churches to provide quarterly Parent s Nights Out, which give an evening of respite to parents who may otherwise never get a break. We sponsor a foster family event each spring, working with area businesses to thank the families for their service to our county s foster kids. We also act as a donation coordinator when a parent needs a specific item, such as a dresser or diapers for kids coming into care. For caseworkers, we act as a community resource and local support system. We have helped coordinate family picnics, furniture donations, volunteers for events, and items for youth who are aging out of foster care. Finally, we work closely with emancipating youth to provide furniture, toiletry items, and nonperishable foods to get them started. Our free store for these items is housed at St. John s United Church of Christ. We have resources to help with financial planning, life skills, and the college application process, and we established an award to support a college-bound foster youth. We continue to keep in touch with them as they navigate post-foster care life. Visit
