1 BISHOP SEBASTIAN COUNCIL NO July 2016 Volume 56, Issue 1 KNIGHTS REPORTER Grand Knight s Report - William Keenan Congratulations to all of those Knights who were elected for this fraternal year. I thank the Council for this opportunity to lead you as Grand Knight. It is through the hard work and dedication of our members that we are able to continue to grow and be successful. We have many new and exciting events planned for this year. If any member has an idea or a concern, I would encourage him to let an officer or myself know. We have established a new Retention Committee and are working on creating a Facebook page. All members of our Bishop Sebastian family should feel welcome anytime they meet each other or step into the Hall. This is a year of change. Always remember, Charity, Unity, and Fraternity. There will be a stronger relationship with the DOSEAS, widows, and with the parishes we support. We will continue to work towards building the domestic Church. It s very likely that someone in your immediate or extended family or group of friends is facing financial uncertainty. Maybe there s a possibility that you (or your spouse) could change employers, or even lose your job. Too many people have often relied on group term life insurance as their only safety net. Often, this insurance is an employee benefit provided at low or no cost. The existence of this coverage might convince someone that personallyowned life insurance is not necessary. On June 3, Fr. Guy Kagere and Patrick Cullen took their Knighthood Degree at Patapsco Council. On June 8, Andrew D'Agostino made his Admission Degree at St. Philip Neri Council in Linthicum after the admission committee meeting at the hall on June 6. On June 20, another admission committee meeting was held and two more candidates are now able to take the Admissions Degree, and more to follow. This is a good start for star council for next fraternal year. Membership will always be the life blood of every council. Program Director s Report Steve Radziminski Welcome to the new Fraternal Year! Officers have been elected and will soon be installed. The mix of the officers is good, some experienced members, and some new comers. We will look forward to some creative ideas, especially on Building the Domestic Church. Archbishop Lori has reassigned a number of Priests and Pastors. There will be a current Pastor in a different location, as well as old friends. Hopefully the Council will be able to support these parishes with our programs. I have been approached by the new District Deputy Elect. He has ideas about cooperative agendas, pooling together the talents of the councils within the District, which may lead to easier efforts for all in the report writing function. 3 Culture of Life Activities - Richard Sullivan In early May for the 'Baby Shower for the Unborn' held at Saint Ursula's the Council collected $105 and approximately 10 pounds of baby articles. It was a successful drive and many more articles of clothing, supplies and diapers were collected at the Church over the weekend. If you are interested in becoming more active in Saint Ursula's Respect Life Committee, please contact Liz Walz at ajwalz@verizon.net. They do need your help! Father Francis Ouma's Fatherhood Pilot Program that he has started at the Pregnancy Center North has finished it's first 5 training sessions for volunteers. Council members will be encouraged to learn more about this program. We'll be making information available on this great program, and we ask you to consider becoming a male mentor to young fathers who may not understand the importance of a man in the development of a child. Community Activities - Roy C. Gary Bishop Sebastian Council held a Food For Families drive at Geresbeck's on Eastern Avenue on Saturday, June 11, PGK Michael Mank, Joseph Keller, and Roy Gary and DOSEAS member Rosemary Mank collected 110 items, weighing in at 101 pounds and $59.00 in cash donations for St. Clare's food pantry. Our next Community Activities planned activity is the Parkville Fair on Saturday. September 10, We can use any and all volunteers. Council Activities - Steve Radziminski Congratulations to our Honorees, PGK Michael Colbourne and our new Third Degree Knights. The dinner was held on June 4, We were honored to have State Deputy Stephen Cohen and his wife, and our District Deputy Moises Mariano and his wife join us for the evening. Also our Worthy Chaplin Father Francis Ouma was in attendance. Father Steven Roth, Pastor at St. Isaac Jogues Church and a third degree member of our council also stopped by to greet his Brother Knights and their Ladies. Our Honoree stated in his remarks about his dedication to the Knights and their mission. It was a very enjoyable and memorable evening. Next up is the State Incentive Car Raffle. I am pleased to announce that Brother Patrick Cullen will be assisting us in conducting this event this year. First Prize is a 2017 Ford Mustang or $18, Cash. Look for a letter around the end of July containing raffle tickets for you to sell. We are trying to coordinate with the Parishes and other locations to sell tickets. And don t forget we will be at the Parkville Fair. Please consider coming to these events to sell tickets, we need your help. The drawing will be held on Saturday October 8, Any ideas? Family Activities Michael Colbourne Family of the Month Official qualifications for nominating a family for this honor: The rules for Family of the Month are the member must be a member of the Knights in good standing and a member of the council. Forms have been received for non-members, but they are only put on our participating list and not eligible for the drawing. Only members are. Habitat for Humanity The Family Director will look into this opportunity for our Council to volunteer and help someone receive the gift of shelter. Looking for a Co-Director. The need is great to have a Brother Knight to step up to be the Co-Director for the Parishes we serve. One Co-Director to represent St. Issac Jogues, St. Thomas More and St. Clare Parishes will help our Council greatly. Youth Activities Jose Guzman In June, Saint Ursula's held their annual graduation. The council and the DOSEAS presented the annual citizens of the year award to the 8th graders. This year s winners were Noah Mercado and Cassidy Thommen. In July, I plan to arrange a soccer shootout for early fall. 5 Aberdeen Ironbirds Game This year the council will be going to view a baseball game and taking the Friend s of St. Isaac Jogues along with us. The game is scheduled for August 12th and will feature a tailgate party before the game and fireworks afterward. This game is sold out again this year. Thank You for your support of the event. Call Tom Jr for reservations. $8pp It was great to have so many ladies participate in our tour of St. Mary s Spiritual Center. We are now looking forward to a Paint Night on Monday August 29th. Congratulations to all the new Council Officers and Rick Callender as the new DD. Thank you all for electing the new Officers and your trust in me as the new president. Our plan is to be installed with the Council Officers. The Ladies July s meeting will be held at the hall on July 22nd. Camp GLOW needs you! Mark your calendars for Tuesday July 19 th, and Tuesday August 9 th. We need help at the Bingo games. The Maryland State Ladies donated lots of p0rizes and gifts. This is a great cause, and means so very much to all who attend. Pat will be in OBX, so please see Jeanine if you can help. The Council Family picnic is August 13th...it is a great time for all. Most group life insurance policies are limited in amount, which may be tied to salary or some other benchmark. These numbers are often capped, and this cap may be dangerously low when compared to your family s actual needs. In fact, a detailed needs analysis that evaluates your specific situation, will likely show that any employer-provided coverage falls short. In addition, the amount of group insurance offered is almost always reduced, sometimes dramatically, when you retire. You could one day find yourself without coverage, and if your health has changed (which it will as you age), you might also find yourself unable to secure individual protection.
