1 Northminster Times Northminster Presbyterian Church of Kansas City, Missouri Volume 54, Issue 7 August 2016 New Beginnings Equipping Disciples On Tuesday, July 12 we had a New Beginnings gathering to share an update on the process thus far. In a nutshell, the New Beginnings process has led us to the conclusion that we can t keep doing what we ve always been doing. We must do something new. The Session voted in favor of what the New Beginnings process describes as Mission Redefinition. What is Mission Redefinition? The New Beginning s leader s guide defines Mission Redefinition as, a spiritual, systemic, and strategic visioning process taken on by a congregation that is striving to realize what God has called it to be and do in brand new ways. (New Beginnings Leader s Guide p.55). This will not be a short process, but thankfully we ve done some of the work already. You have probably noticed on the bulletins and a few other places the tag line, Glorifying God, Equipping Disciples, Serving Others. Our New Beginning begins with a commitment to live these out together in community. These three priorities will be the standard against which we measure our use of time, talents, and resources. Our starting place is with Equipping Disciples. Before we can equip others as disciples we must be properly equipped. In order to help this process, we will be offering a new small group ministry called the, Apprentice Series. There are three books in the series: The Good and Beautiful God: Falling in Love with the God Jesus Knows The Good and Beautiful Life: Putting on the Character of Christ The Good and Beautiful Community: Following the Spirit, Extending Grace, Demonstrating Love This is a nine-month commitment to a small group that will meet weekly for 90 minutes. Each participant is asked to read the chapter before the gathering and take time to do the soul training exercises. The group time will consist of discussion, sharing, and encouragement. This is a GREAT opportunity to get to know each other better and support one another as we grow in Christ. Watch your mail, , and bulletins for opportunities to sign up for Apprentice Groups. These Apprentice Groups are just one part of our New Beginning. More is to come, especially in the area of Serving Others. 2 J.O.Y. (Just Older Youth) JOY group will meet on Thursday, August 4th. We will have taco salad for lunch at 12:00 and then will play bingo, with a jackpot of $ Everyone wins! Team D is in the kitchen Presbyterian Women Church Women United Celebrate Friendship Day On May 6 at Church Women United May Friendship Day our Mary Ruth Bateman was honored as Northminster s Valiant Woman of the Year. Mary Ruth has been very active in our church as well as Clay County Clothes Closet, Northland Christmas Store, tutor for Church Women United honor Mary Ruth North Kansas City Bateman as Valiant Woman of the Year School District and has been a volunteer at the Folly Theatre for many years. Northminster s Presybterian Women hosted a luncheon for the congregation, followed by birthday cake. Frances received congratulations from Representative Sam Graves and President and Mrs. Obama. She also received a beautiful framed resolution from Missouri State Representative Jon Carpenter.

August 22 6:00 p.m. Northminster s Fellowship Hall Free & Open to the Community The August 27 Swap & Shop and the November 19 Flea & Holiday Market have been CANCELLED I have been approved by Session as your new Librarian. Every month I will suggest certain books to be read. We re thinking about having the library open for awhile where I will be there to help. We haven t quite decided when, and how it will be feasible. There also will be an online catalogue that you may look at for ideas of books you want to check out. It is not totally set up yet because there are books to catalogue. That but it is the biggest thing holding me up to be fully functional. There is also a pocket in each book with a check out card. You may check out books by putting your name and date on the card, and for right now, leaving the card on the desk. Pastor Seth and I will be correlating a list of books we would like to see in the library. Because there is not a line item in the budget for the library, what I will do is list those books here. To obtain them, I would like to suggest that you donate one from the list to the library in honor of someone. I intend to do one for my father and one for my sister-in-law. I also recommend donations for the library. Just make sure it is appropriate for a church library. Please let s keep this room professional looking. It is used for groups to meet in. Some from outside the church. This means please don t leave boxes in there. There are storage rooms meant for those things. If you leave any reading materials that you don t want to donate to the library, such as magazines, please leave them on the desk with a note as to who they belong to. Thank you all for all the books that have been donated and for taking advantage of the library! I look for great things ahead and actually have a vision for the future. More about that later! Mary Greenup Don t forget to save UPC labels (Best Choice). We have a goal of 1,000 UPC labels so far we have less than 500. If we reach our goal, Associated Grocers sends us a check at yearend. Place the UPC s in the containers in the kitchen (in the corner, by the stove). Questions? Contact Mary Ruth Bateman. Mary Greenup has beautifully embroidered cloth bags with the Northminster Presbyterian logo. They would be great reusable lunch bags or great for small items. They are available free of charge in the Narthex. However, the Outreach Team thanks you in advance if you would like to make a donation to help pay for her supplies. 3

4 4 How Can YOU Make a Joyful Noise?! God commanded us all to make a joyful noise, and one of the great ways you can do that is to be a part of Northminster s Chancel Choir or Handbell Choir! No auditions required, and if you will bring the bucket, we will show you how to carry that tune! We will start rehearsals for both Bells (6 pm) and Choir (7 pm) - returning to TUESDAY evenings - on August 30. Our first Sunday to lead in worship will be after Labor Day, on September 11. I would also like to have a Choir Rehearsal Retreat from 9:30-noon on Saturday, September 10, followed by a potluck lunch. We will use the Retreat to get a head start on anthems for the fall, preview our Christmas music, and just work on ways we can sing together better as a choir. Handbells can join us for lunch, and afterward we will have a one hour rehearsal/workshop with the Bell Choir. I m planning our worship music on Sunday the 11 th to involve both Choir and Bells in some way. We have an exciting year ahead, and Baker and I look forward to seeing returning faces and welcoming some new ones, as well. Feel free to me if you have any questions at cshepmax@me.com. Groups are open to anyone who has suffered a loss and does not want to walk the journey alone, anyone who wants to learn more about healthy grieving, receive the support of others, and find a way to wholeness again. What is involved? At our first gathering each participant will receive a copy of Understanding Your Grief by Alan D. Wolfelt, Ph.D. We will go through a brief introduction to the Understanding Your Grief group process. For the remaining sessions, there will be some reading (10-20 pages) the week before our gatherings. If you can t attend a session, you can keep working through the book and join us the following week. Each session will consist of a review of the reading as well as an opportunity to share, for those who wish. The goal is to learn more about healthy grieving and find a way to wholeness again.
