1 Knights Of Columbus Mater Dei Council # October 2017 GK s Report Brothers, It's only October and things are well underway for the Council and hopefully you either participated in one of these or at least saw your fellow Knights in action. First, the annual car raffle was spearheaded by Pat Degraba again (many thanks Pat!) and we collected almost $3,000. Keep in mind that some of this money goes to the State and we keep the rest. This is our main source of funds for operating so very important that we raise as much as we can. Thanks to Pete Zaudtke for getting the car again, this makes a huge difference in selling tickets. At our parish picnic we did all cooking so many thanks to Don Titzmen for leading charge. We were cooking on site this year which made the cooking alot easier and kept the food much warmer. The addition of chicken was a big hit. Next year we hope to be able to cook in full sight of the picnic grounds so to be more visible. Finally the Tootsie Roll campaign is finishing up which was headed up by a new face, Brendan Combs. Thanks Brendan for taking this on and by the early results a significant donation for the intellectually handicap. This month we have a first degree for all new potential members. Please get the word out and recruit new members to join our order. Which finally brings me to my final thoughts for this month. As I see these activities unfolding I will continue to bring what I see as my main focus: increase visibility of the Knights in our parish and reach out to our Brothers that are not currently Knights. Your Council and I need your help. We really need to get our current Knights more involved in our activities, I was happy to see some new faces at the events in September but let's get more Knights involved. Please volunteer to help whether it's after a Mass with fundraising or recruitment or some other event that we currently do or even a new event you would like to introduce. We need you, our Parish needs you and you are called to serve. District Deputy October is a special month for the Knights of Columbus in celebration of our namesake Christopher Columbus. Co- lumbus Day is here and there a few Columbus Day activities we hope you will attend, including the 127th Annual Columbus Day Parade in Baltimore (10/8 at 2pm) ending in Little Italy, the ceremony at Union Station (10/9 at 10:45am) and the Columbus Day Ball on 10/7, 6:30-11:30pm at the BWI Marriot, which is the biggest event of our year. The State Memorial Mass has been changed to be on 11/26 so mark your calendar. Other upcoming District events include Monsignor Wells Council monthly breakfast on 10/8 before and after morning masses, Rock Creek s pancake breakfast on 10/15 and an Octoberfest Spaghetti Dinner on 10/22, also Soccer Shootouts occur in October and November at several of our councils. In October, District 18 will host Admission (1st) Degrees at Rock Creek on 10/17 and at Mater Dei on 10/26, and there will be another Admission Degree on 11/14 at Manyanet. Our District s next Formation (2nd) Degree will be at St. Elizabeth on 11/19. This year, for the first time there will two Patriotic (4th ) Degree Exemplifications for the Archdiocese of Washington District and the new one is coming up on 10/28 at the Nativity Catholic Church in Washington, DC. If you have any candidates for this degree, let us know soon so we can get the paperwork processed. CSAC continue to meet monthly and continues with great momentum. I encourage all councils in District 18 (and the entire state, for that matter) to schedule a Prayer Vigil in each of the churches served by your Council as soon as you can schedule them with your Pastors. There will be a Holy Land Day (including an Olive Wood Sale) event at Saint Andrew the Apostle Church in Silver Spring on November 4th & 5th. Please support this event and this is a great opportunity for others who would like to hold this event at their church to learn how to do one. We have a strong committee, but we could use more members if you are called to help our brothers and sisters suffering from religious persecution. Our biggest need is for several members who will keep in touch with a set of Councils and help them grow in their support of Christian Relief. If you want to help, me at joe@kofc-csac.org. I hope to see you all at Council events or at your Business and/or Social Meetings in the next few months. As always, let me know if I can help your Council in any way. Joe Stewart District Deputy #18

3 Membership Drive Mater Dei Council is conducting its membership drive at St. Raphael Church on Sunday, October 1 st, 2017 after all Masses. It s salutary to review what s done, and how simple the membership drive really is. This time the process is made more simple by the fact that the Right to Life Committee is hosting the Coffee & Doughnut Social at the Trumpet Room Please sign up for the Mass of your choice by contacting Matt Hoyle at mwhoyle@yahoo.com, or by phone at Blood Drive Make your lifesaving appointment today! Sign up to donate BLOOD on Saturday, October 14 th, from 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM at Our Lady of Mercy Gym, 9200 Kentsdale Drive, Potomac, Maryland Visit inova.org/donateblood, click on Schedule a Donation, then click on Donate Blood, and use Sponsor Code If you have questions, or if you d like to work in this effort, please contact Mike (mpdonahue@verizon.net). Parish Picnic Once again, there was no grill on the hill this year; BUT we did have the grill in the mini-courtyard between the Youth Center and St. Raphael School. This really streamlined getting the food from the grills to the serving tables. Further, renown efficiency expert, PGK Don Titzman, and Parish Council Chair (and fellow Knight) John Piernikowski set up the menue to allow preparation at the Parish Kitchen on the morning of. In addition to the Parish grill, one of Don s home-made variety, and one rental gave us the capacity to turn out a large amount of meet in a short period of time. Grilled hot dogs, hamburgers, and chicken were all great; the chicken was the biggest hit. Don and four volunteers (John Daly, Pete Zaudtke, and Pat & joe Doane) showed up at 10:00 AM, and were augmented, as the day wore on, by a number of other helpers (WGK Mike Watson, PGK Bob Fontana, Warden Federico Sologuren, Guard Henry Williams, Treasurer Eric Gregrich, Recorder David Kordel (and son!!!), Dennis Elliott, Joe Matelis, PGK Larry Boesch, WFS John Frey, and PGK Dick Jasinski). The most notable volunteer was John Daly, who labored from dawn (sort-of) to dusk, including cleanup. PGK 2 & FDD Pete Zaudtke provided heavy hauling for a grill. Marty Piper and Eileen Kutchak were present and helping for the duration (plus six). Mater Dei Council provided crews to keep the meat warm and moist, to bring it up to the serving tables, to clean up the meat operation and pack it out at the end of the day, and to deliver the leftovers (not just the meat) to the shelters. Next year we will cook up on the hill next to the Jesus statue so we get out of the cone of smoke and be more visible to everyone. Let the WGK know if you have any other ideas for next year.
4 Soccer Shootout Mater Dei Council, KOC # 9774, and St. Raphael School (SRS) will conduct a Soccer Shootout contest on Wednesday, October 11 th, from 8:30 AM 11:00 AM at Hadley Park, Falls Road & Falls Chapel Way, Rockville, Maryland. There s no need to wait, contact Federico at to assist. An e-vite to sign up will be forthcoming from DGK Daniel Rueda Posada. Retta 31 October Prayer to St. Joseph To thee, O blessed Joseph, we have recourse in our affliction, and having implored the help of thy thrice holy Spouse, we now, with hearts filled with confidence, earnestly beg thee also to take us under thy protection. By that charity wherewith thou wert united to the Immaculate Virgin Mother of God, and by that fatherly love with which thou didst cherish the Child Jesus, we beseech thee and we humbly pray that thou wilt look down with gracious eye upon that inheritance which Jesus Christ purchased by His blood, and wilt succor us in our need by thy power and strength. Defend, O most watchful guardian of the Holy Family, the chosen off-spring of Jesus Christ. Keep from us, O most loving Father, all blight of error and corruption. Aid us from on high, most valiant defender, in this conflict with the powers of darkness. And even as of old thou didst rescue the Child Jesus from the peril of His life, so now defend God's Holy Church from the snares of the enemy and from all adversity. Shield us ever under thy patronage, that, following thine example and strengthened by thy help, we may live a holy life, die a happy death, and attain to everlasting bliss in Heaven. Amen.
