Th torrible distress of may families and dependants of those who have been dotainod under the emergency regulations, and tho plight of the political refugees are a challenge to the British public who hnve already supported tho Defence and Aid Fund with magnificent r.enorouaity. Already more than 130,000 has been raised. But a far greater aum of money io still required if we are to rrefct even a proportion of the needs of tho detainees, the refugees and their dependants.

Leslie Weatherhead, Harold Wilson, M.i One hundred and fifty-six leading opponents of Apartheid were arrested in South Africa in December The case will probably drag on till at least towards the end of Some of the accused have already lost their jobs. Most are in no position to pay for legal aid. The position of the dependants of many of them is already serious. By the time the trial is over the plight of all, accused and dependants alike, will have become desperate. At least 100,000 will be required for legal defence and aid; Christian Action aims to raise 20,000 towards this total. Christian Action is working in closest touch with the committee responsible for the Defence and Aid Fund in South Africa. The objects of our fund are: (a) to provide for the legal defence of the accused; (b) to aid the families and dependants of those arrested; and (c) to help to ensure that the. conscience of the world is kept fully alive to the issues at stake. The response to this appeal is already encouraging. In particular the Movement for Colonial Freedom has given its full support from the beginning; and many Church congregations, Friends Meetings, and Trade Union Branches, etc., have sent generous donations as a result of special collections. I enclose for the Christian Action Defence and Aid Fund. C.B.E., M.A. B.Litt. Sir Frank Willis. C.B.E. Miss Monica Wingate, M.A. of You may wonder why I should be writing to you on behalf of Christian Action. I do so because I am convinced that this movement has something of farreaching value to offer all sections of industry. We think you will agree ^hat, as industry has become more complex, it has almost unconsciously proved fertile soil for the materialistic philosophies of today, and the sense of personal responsibility in the work of the community has tended to decline - this is perhaps particularly marked in the Dock areas and the Mining areas. It is our conviction, fortified by experience, that well chosen and willing Christian workers, by example and by encouraging and guiding discussion among men and women, can help to create a new consciousness of personal responsibility and an atmosphere inimical to the demoralising influences which are so rife today. May I draw your attention to the emphasis we lay upon the work of our Association in regard to industry. We are conscious that, in appealing to Industry for support, the contributions we receive should be used where Industry would agree that most good is likely to result. The support we seek is in the form of organised co-operation as well as essential financial aid. It will need the co-operation of all men of goodwill if we are to attain the goals to which our Christian society should aspire. I would be very grateful if your Company should decide to subscribe to this appeal. If this is not possible, perhaps, of your kindness, you would be willing to make a donation in your personal capacity. Yours sincerely, Chairman.

18 MEMORANDUM The old terms of reference of the South African Defence and Aid Fund were as follows: (a) (b) To provide for the legal defence of the accused; To aid their families and dependants; (c) To help to keep the conscience of the world alive to the issues at stake. / The new terms proposed are: (a) To safeguard freedom and human dignity in Southern Africa whenever and wherever they are endangered and particularly ^ (i) to provide means of Legal'aid and defence for persons who, it) thepopinion of the Managers of the Fund, are victims of unjust legislation or oppressive and arbitrary procedures; (ii) to support, sustain and comfort their families and dependants; (111) to help to keep the conscience of the world alive to the issues at stake.
19 The Christian Action Defence and Aid Fund has a long list of sponsors and the Council of Chris tian Action is advis ed by a Sponsors Committee. In view of the undertaking to rais>; another 200, COO arrangements are now being made to set up either a body of Trustees or a Management Committee of the.sponsors under which a Grants Committee will serve. It is hoped by this means to give the Fund even wider support than it already enjoys and to enable all organisations concerned with the racial problems in South Africa a bigger say in the management of the Fund.
