1 Community Congregational Church United Church of Christ P.O. Box 762 McCall, ID Website: mccallucc.org Rev. Charlottie Havlicak, Pastor May 2018 Volume XXVII Number 5 Linda Hallock Named Moderator of Idaho Association At the Idaho Association meeting held at Pilgrim Cove Camp on April 20 and 21, our own Linda Hallock was named Moderator of the Association. As Moderator, she will preside at all meetings of the Idaho Association and also perform other duties that may be delegated by the member churches of the Central Pacific Conference. Ken Feaster-Eytchison was named Vice-Moderator; Laura Creech will retain her position as Secretary and Ginni Neil will continue as Treasurer. Bob and Linda Hallock became members of McCall Community Congregational United Church of Christ in 2010 and have been active in the church ever since. Linda has served for many years as a Deacon, and is currently Deacon Chair. She also coordinates the Hanging of the Greens at Christmas time and plans the church socials and Mother s Day Luncheon. She organized the children s Easter Egg Hunt (Continued on Page 5)
2 Pastor s Writings April Showers Bring May Flowers In honor of Mother s Day, I feel compelled to share with you some of the wonderful memories I have of my beloved mama, who now lives in heaven with Jesus. But in my heart she is still here with me; in my heart I am still a little girl and mama is a young mother. It seems that life was better back then. My mother loved to pick wild flowers in the spring. We would run through the fields looking for bluebells and tiny little yellow buttercups. Then when the Indian paint brushes came into bloom, we would have fruit jars filled with bouquets of the beautiful orange flowers, mixed with branches from the wild yellow rose bushes. I remember every Monday was wash day. All the sheets were stripped from our beds and the washing began dish towels, then bath towels, sheets, underwear, colored things, and finally my daddy s overalls, then the rag rugs. Back and forth to the clothes line, hanging up the wash. When all the clothes were washed, she then used the water to mop the kitchen floor, then she would take the water and pour it out on the straggling lilac bushed and the old yellow rose bush. Always a pot of beans was on the stove for our dinner. Beans and homemade bread a meal fit for a king! My mother s energy was tireless, as she cooked and cleaned to care for her family. Life was better then, because when I got hurt, I could run to my mama. She would kiss away my tears and maybe if I was lucky, she d put a band-aid on my scratch. Then I would take it off my scrubbed elbow or knee and wear it on my arm like it was a wrist watch. I dreamed one day of owning a wrist watch. Always, she would take me onto her lap and hold and rock me and sing until the pain went away, or maybe I would drift off to sleep. Sometimes when my life is tough, I d like to return to those long-ago years. I would be a little girl again and I would say, Hold me, mama, for life was tough today. A good mother is a gift from God. I ask each one of you to take a few minutes and think about your own dear mother. Stop and say a prayer, visit with her, call her on the telephone or write her a long letter telling her how much you love and appreciate her and all she has done for you over the years. Or if she lives in heaven, watch for her, she is now (Continued on Page 5)

4 Let s Get Re- Acquainted Frank Eld Named Lecturer of the Year Historic Roseberry founder Frank Eld has been named a Lecturer of the Year by the Finkanduia Foundation National. The one-year appointment will begin in July and will see Eld visit more than a dozen chapters of Finlandia Foundation National. In U.S. Finnish circles, to be selected for Lecturer of the Year or Performer of the Year is about as high an honor one s colleagues can bestow on someone, Eld said. I am humbled and excited about this. He will receive $10,000 to cover traveling expenses in his Finnebago, which is the pickup on which Eld built a miniature log cabin using traditional Finnish construction methods. The board was impressed with your Finnebago travels around the country, your active promotion of the art of Scandinavian vernacular log building construction, and our connection to various Finnish-American projects, Jon Saari of the foundation said. The mission of the foundation is to sustain Finnish-American culture in the United States and the ancestral tie with Finland by raising funds for grants and
5 scholarships, initiating innovative national programs and networking with local chapters. The group s offices are in Pasadena, California. Eld is working on his second book about Finns and their buildings. His research trip last summer took him almost 17,500 miles and five months he traveled through Finnish communities in the United States and Canada. Eld founded Historic Roseberry, located one mile east of Donnelly, in In the following four decades, Eld and a legion of volunteers from the Long Valley Preservation Society worked tirelessly to transform the townsite into the complex of historic buildings. Eld estimated he moved more than two dozen historic buildings from their original locations to Roseberry, with most of them restored and open to visitors. Frank Eld and his wife, Kathy, moved to Boise in 2015 after rescuing an historic building from demolition, moving it to Reserve Street and starting renovations. (Reprinted from The Star-News) Plant Sale To Be Held June 2 The annual plant sale at McCall Community Congregational United Church of Christ will be held the weekend following Memorial Day. 8 Belinda Bowler To Perform The Second Sunday Six recital for May will feature the music of Belinda Bowler. Belinda has been singing as long as she can remember. Her father was a professional singer and from an early age she learned the value of a good story told in song. He bought home her first guitar when she was eight years old and with it she began the musical journey of her life. Belinda currently teaches music in Boise schools, integrating curriculum and social justice issues through song. Helping her students tell their own stories with words and music creates a positive atmosphere that allows them to experience the satisfaction that comes from this mode of personal expression. In 2016, 20 years since her first CD, she recorded Trumpet Vine, a collection of her favorite songs. Belinda tells stories and sings songs that touch the heart of her listeners. Her easy presence, confident guitar playing, and captivating vocal style leave an audience feeling like they have spent an evening with a friend. The recital will be held on Sunday, May 13, at McCall Community Congregational United Church of Christ, beginning at 6 p.m. There is no charge for the performance, but donations are welcomed.
