Approve offering Easter lilies as memorials or honors for Easter at $15 each, along with the opportunity to contribute to the music program for bells and chimes. Approve a single summer worship service at 10:00 a.m. from May 28 through September 3, Notification will be in the April newsletter and Easter Sunday bulletin. Membership (Gibson McCall/Debbie Hahn) Approve allowing Prayers and Squares to sell raffle tickets for a quilt on April 23 and 30. Mission (Dave Kemble/Linda Kean) Approve selling Mother s Day and Father s Day cards as a mission fundraiser on April 23 and April 30. 2 Education (Ray Spears/Debra Mizelle) Approve Moment for Ministry on March 26 to announce the Barbecue dinner on March 31 and the Relay for Life gift card raffles on April 2 and 23 that were approved at the last meeting. Clerk Approve minutes for stated Session meeting of February 19, 2017 (Attachment A). Moderator Vote on items in the consent agenda. 7. DISCUSSION AGENDA Administration Ministry (Rob Ables/ Kelly Barnhill) Approve Kelly Barnhill to lead and form the Repair and Renovation Campaign Committee. (Personnel) Approve calling a congregational meeting one Sunday in April for the purpose of electing a new Associate Pastor Search Committee. 8. INFORMATION Membership (Gibson McCall/Debbie Hahn) Jean Duff has asked to be removed from the homebound communion list, and Mary Smith has requested to be added. Worship (Karen Kay/Joe Asselmeier) Easter Sunday services will be at 6, 8:30, and 11:00 a.m. this year. A sign-up sheet will be circulated at the Session meeting for the Maundy Thursday service requesting Session members to assist with bringing food. A sign-up sheet will be circulated for communion servers on Maundy Thursday. 9 Treasurer's Report Derek Perry 10. Adjourn Moderator ******************************************************************** Attachment A Session Minutes First Presbyterian Church Greenville, NC February 19, 2017 The Session of First Presbyterian Church, Greenville, NC held a stated meeting in the Fellowship Hall at 7:00 pm on February 19, Elders present: Rob Ables, Catherine Adams, Joe Asselmeier, Kelly Barnhill, Doug Boyd, Clay Britt, Jessica Davenport., Sue DelVecchio, Bill Farrior, Jeri Jackson, Sandy Jackson, Karen Kay, Linda Kean, Dave Kemble, Bill Lehman, Allen Lyle, Frances Mallison, Gibson McCall, Debra Mizelle, Kathleen Randall, Ray Spears, Elizabeth Swaggerty, David Webb, Holli Williams and Jackie Wynne. Moderator Bill Neely called the meeting to order at 7:00 pm; a quorum was present, Karen Kay led an opening devotional and prayer. Bill Neely offered an opening prayer. PEOPLE ARE IMPORTANT Illnesses: Special mention was made for Beth Clark, Martha Coffman, Ben Lattin, Margie Weight, Jim Finch, Thelma Flye, Joe Sullivan, Connie Bond, Mary Smith, Caroline Whaley and Michael Nelms. Deaths: Greg Riddle (Leigh An Harris s Father) died January 19, Amanda Hines offered a prayer which included those mentioned under concerns. SPECIAL ORDER OF THE DAY Kirk Dominick with I 2 Consulting presented the results of the Capital Campaign Feasibility Study. Copy of the entire presentation is found in pdf file attachment. Mr. Dominick concluded that while the family life center was perceived as a positive goal, respondents were reticent to pursue this goal at this time. The survey results did strongly support the repair and renovation goals (listed on page 7). Mr. Dominick opened the floor for questions and answered those posed which concerned sampling frame and representativeness of respondents. Additionally clarification of cost items related to the HVAC system were discussed. COMMUNICATIONS Letters of thanks for contributions were received from Children s Hope Alliance for Thanksgiving offering, Third Street Education Center for 2016 contributions, Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina for year-end gift of $1,200 and from Community Crossroads Center (formerly Greenville Community Shelters) for our donation. A letter of membership (to First Presbyterian Church of Greenville) transfer for Eric Lee Whaley and Caroline Beasley Whaley was received from St Paul s Episcopal Church, Greenville, NC. A letter certifying the transfer of Grace Fuller into the membership of Northminister Presbyterian Church at Macon, Georgia was received. MINUTES Minutes were approved for stated Session meeting of January 22, 2017, and the called meeting of January 29, Page 3 of 10
4 MINISTRY REPORTS Administration Ministry (Rob Ables) A motion passed from the ministry to approve building use requests for a) Baajah Mohammed s request for use of sanctuary for rehearsal and performance of her vocal recital, b) Greenville Women s League request for use of fellowship hall for monthly evening (6:30-8:30) meetings. Third Monday of February& March, 4 th Monday in April, and 3 rd Monday June-November 2017, c) Choral Arts Carolina for sanctuary and organ for rehearsal and performance of choral music for two full days in June (Friday June 9 and Saturday June 10) and d) Bayt Shalom request for conducting an Interfaith Holocaust Remembrance Service for April 23 rd. A motion passed from the Ministry to approve Johnny Wynn and Betty Williams to perform annual financial review. Following some discussion a motion passed to approve organ upgrade. This upgrade will replace wooden trackers with carbon fiber. The proposal from Lewtak Pipe and Organ builders estimated the cost to be approximately $15,000. Following some clarification of funding, a motion passed to approve the repair and renovation campaign for $225,000, with excess to go into building fund. Mission Ministry (Dave Kemble) A motion passed to approve Presbyterian Women to present a Moment for Ministry March 5 th for a special offering for hygienic kits to support flood victims. A motion passed to approve combining Mayfest silent auction with the Live Auction event. The mission ministry provided a reminder that applications for Mayfest mission funds are available via the website with a deadline of March 24 th. Education (Ray Spears) A motion passed to approve Lenten prayer and study series for Adults. March 5 or 12 to April 2 (4:45-6:00)-Specific Days to be coordinated with attendees and Amanda Hines. A motion passed to approve three fund raising events: (1) Bar-b-que Dinner March 31, 10:30-3:00 $8.00 per plate, (2) Relay for Life Fund Raiser gift Card Raffle April 2-23 rd and (3) Cake and Pie Auction April 9 Worship (Karen Kay and Joe Asselmeier) A motion passed to approve a fund raising event for the children who are attending Montreat Worship and Music Conference have a Mardi Gras Booth and a King Cake auction at the Shrove Pancake Super. 5 A motion passed to approve three additional mid-day services during Holy Week on Monday- Wednesday, April The services will be based on Faces of the Cross. Mid-day service will include the usual soup and sandwich lunch with these services. A sign-up sheet for volunteers to provide meal and for attendees request a small donation to cover the cost of the meal. Karen Kay reported on the training session for Elder Assisting in Worship and Lay readers. Attendees numbered approximately 19. Presenters included Dale Kitchen and Jon Randall. Additional training sessions are being planned. Joe Asselmeier encouraged attendance to the event posted on the FPC Face Book page for Brad Collier s organ recital scheduled for Sunday, March 12th at 4 p.m. Since FPC will host Maundy Thursday Worship Services on Thursday, April 13, at 7 p.m. Worship Ministry would like the other ministries to assist with providing light refreshments for the lingering after the service. Worship will coordinate with Membership for the lingering. Worship Ministry will be folding Palm Crosses on Saturday, April 8th, from 10 a.m. noon and welcome all able assistance. The choir will be traveling to central Europe for a Performance Tour May 21-30, At this stage of planning for this self-funded event, performance dates and locations are set. Membership (Gibson McCall) Amanda Hines is having a meeting for parents of young children interested in forming a House Church on March 5 th at 9:45. Gibson reminded session that Stephen Ministry staff will be conducting services on April 30 th and reported that homebound Communion was conducted today February 19 th. TREASURER'S REPORT Bill Neely provided a highlight of items on the treasurer s report and Kelly Barnhill provided additional summaries. OTHER BUSINESS A motion passed to act as endorsing entity for the application of Dr. Rodney Cole s grant being submitted to New Hope Presbytery to secure funding for Outreach Ministry. The motion discussed (during the January 22 nd meeting) to change the time of stated session meetings failed to pass. The meeting was adjourned after a closing prayer by Bill Neely.
