1 June 2018 The Church at Horseshoe Bay 600 HI RIDGE ROAD, PO BOX 8295, HORSESHOE BAY, TX Ascribe Praise The thoughts are still fresh. I see in my mind s eye my travel companions and the many spiritually significant and moving places our group visited in Israel. Yes, seeing the many important Biblical sites helped make the stories more vivid and real. Yet even more special to me was the spiritual significance of what we experienced together: being on the top of Mt. Carmel to recount the episode of the prophet Elijah and the contest against King Ahab s 450 prophets of Baal with Elijah s stinging words to the faithless Israelites words still appropriate to people today: How long will you waver? If the Lord is God, follow him. But if Baal is God, follow him. But the people said nothing. Or the walking among the excavation of Sepphoris, just four miles from where Jesus grew up. Many scholars believe Jesus and his father did construction and carpentry work here and would have learned Roman and Greek culture which would provide the backdrop for many of Jesus teachings. Or being in the Garden of Gethsemane at the Mt. of Olives and quietly reflecting on what Jesus would have experienced on the night of his arrest seeing the glow of torch lights above the Olive trees knowing those torches were coming from Jerusalem people coming to arrest him. Or Masada the Herodian fortress on a high, almost inaccessible mesa rising from the desolate desert floor by the Dead Sea briefly occupied by a small band of Zealots and their families before the Roman army eventually breached the fortress only to find all the occupants dead. These Jews took their own lives rather than face torture and slavery at the hands of Rome. A moving symbol of sacrifice not unlike the Alamo not unlike the sacrificial death of Jesus for humankind. Or the powerful moment of watching hundreds of orthodox Jewish men and women at the Western (Wailing) Wall in worship through prayer and song and lifting my own prayer to the Lord the Lord s Prayer. Or the spiritually moving experience of sharing the sacrament of Communion at the Garden Tomb our last day together before returning home. Through it all, I was amazed, again, at God s mighty acts in fashioning a covenant people. You and me are spiritual by-products of what God did so many centuries ago... and what our Lord continues doing today. For that I especially ascribe praise. Blessings, Malcolm McQueen Senior Pastor Calendar of Events: June 20 Church family meeting at 6pm, fellowship hall June 23 Men s Prayer Breakfast at 8:30 am, fellowship hall June 24 One Church service at 10 am June 27- HSB Business Alliance Coffee from 9-10am, fellowship hall June 26 Books and Scones at 2:30 pm, library July 17 YouthCue at 11am, Sanctuary
2 YouthCUE to Return ISRAEL SPIRITUAL JOURNEY FOLLOW-UP By now you ve likely heard some of the stories from those who participated in the In Jesus Steps trip to Israel from May It was an excellent experience for all who attended, not only because of the sites visited (which helped make the Bible come alive), but also because of the spiritual aspect of the trip: participants finding holy moments in the trip. Plans are underway to have the participants share their experiences with our congregation and others who are interested. Details to come, but keep your eyes open! The youth chorale YouthCUE is returning to sing at The Church of Horseshoe Bay Tuesday, July 17, This choir performed here last year on their summer tour of Texas. These are some the most talented young singers from across Texas and surrounding states. They are directed by Randy Edwards and accompanied on organ/piano by Daniel Zamora. This will be an 11:00 am concert and it is FREE. Mark this date on your cal- endar, Tuesday, July 17. MOF Fish Fry Men of Faith Chairman Bob Rogers Our annual fish fry was another special fellowship gathering, this time dedicated to our local elected officials whose public service is guided by their faith. The Men of Faith presented it, but other attendees pitched in, including some of our wives. I wish to thank everyone for their cooking, set-up and clean-up efforts, and the wonderful Men s Chorus. As is often said around our church, It was a good day. Jim Hower Steve Jorden, and special guests Tom & Nadine Craddock THE FREEZER IS FULL! Our Church Ladies have been Cookin! There are now in our kitchen freezer plenty of casseroles, meat dishes, soups and quiches all lovingly prepared for any church member who is sick, recovering from surgery or otherwise unable to cook a healthy meal for themselves and/or their spouse. The Freezer Friends Freezer is on the right side of the kitchen and dishes are all labeled with ingredients and freezing dates. Please log out in the log book to the right of the freezer what you are removing from the freezer so that we can keep track of replacement needs. Steve Jarrard with a batch of fish Books and Scones will meet on Tuesday, June 26, at 2:30 in the church library. The book for discussion is Live Free, A Fresh Look at the Fruit of the Spirit, by Constantine R. Campbell. Books are available in the library office for $6.00. Also, we are excited to hear a book presentation of The Scarlet Cord, coauthored by our member, Mary Ellen Keith. Please come and join us.

6 Pastor s Notes Summer arrives with the usual summer heat and summer fun. The kids and grandkids show up to cheer the family, to make way to the golf course, to Lake LBJ, and to the swimming pool. Here at The Church at Horseshoe Bay we ask ourselves, What can we do this Summer to help our church? The question is a good one to ponder. The preaching series ENGAGE from the Book of Acts has both enlightened us concerning the early church and encouraged us as to how we can serve Christ. One item that keeps repeating itself in the Book of Acts is Luke writing about the early church as a church of prayer. If you read Paul s letters you sense the same thing. He challenges and encourages the church to pray without ceasing, he acknowledges he loves the church and prays for them, and he asks them to pray for each other, the missionary journeys and God s work in the church, and for specific things like praying for church leaders, political leaders, and so many other things. Even Jesus said, Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened. Which of you, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him! (Matt 7:7-12, NIV). The old Presbyterian Preacher George Buttrick called prayer, friendship held in reverence. In other words, Jesus is our friend (I hear Garry singing What a friend we have in Jesus ) and because he is our friend we love him, revere him, acknowledge his holiness and worthiness and know he can be trusted as we pray to him. As our friend we can ask, seek, and knock as we speak to Jesus concerning our personal needs, our church needs, and our burden for the world that needs Christ s peace. This summer at The Church at Horseshoe Bay, what is one thing we all can do? We can pray. Let s be like the early church and pray. Pray for our church, community, and the world. Pray for each other. Pray for our Board and future decisions. Even pray for the person you casually converse with at the grocery store, cleaners, or restaurant. Prayer works. The Book of Acts teaches us how God s Spirit works in us through prayer. And, more importantly, prayer works in us to draw us near to Christ as we serve him. A summer of prayer, Pastor John Amy Childress L-r, Ann Higdon, Pam Carrothers, Paula Williams, Julie Parker, Andra Stevens Handbell FUN? Playing handbells is not always what you see on a Sunday morning. There is a lot of work that goes on behind closed doors. We do have a good time at just about everything we do including the end of year cleaning, polishing and summer packing of the handbells. We will start again in September with some training rehearsals and would like to invite those that have always wanted to try it to attend! I know of several new ringer inquiries. Hope to see some new ringers in the fall. L-r, Michele Kesler, Gail Gerber, Cindy Fair Garry
