It is a story of progress from This World to That Which is to Come. Ladies join us for an enlightening and informative discussion. Hope to see you there. Books are available in the church office for $7.00.

3 Ascribe Praise Last week on Facebook, I read a comment from a person I know a person who would describe herself as a Christian. She was commenting on a Christian blog post critical of Christians who get upset over minor matters and not over major ones. She wrote, Good read and why I choose not to go to church much anymore. Christians are way too upset about the wrong things. It is probably true that many Christ-followers do get upset more about minor issues than major ones (like poverty or homelessness, etc.). But I also thought she had missed the point. Just because followers of Jesus are hypocritical (and every one of us are, including her), that s all the more reason to be IN church, not staying away from it. I need to be in regular community worship because of the many things it does for me: I need to hear the pastor or lector call me to worship the great Triune God and not worship myself or what I do; I need to sing the hymns of the faith to remind me that I am a part of the great cloud of witnesses and to bring me to a place of praise; I need to pray with the faith family because prayer is what changes me (and us) to be more in tune with God s will; I need to confess my sin because my actions (and inaction) contribute to the fallen-ness of the world; I need to hear scripture and a sermon because the Word written, spoken and received is what gives me life; I need to receive a benediction because it encourages me to hold to Christ and live for Him. In short, it is precisely because I am a hypocrite that I need worship not to stay away from it. I need our church family to help me live and think and act as our Lord wants. So see you in church. 4 REMEMBERING THE REFORMATION (This October 31 marks the 500 th anniversary of the beginning of the Protestant Reformation, a history-altering event that began a monumental movement. Each month we ll explore the background to the Reformation and why it still impacts the world today. Last month we briefly looked at the underlying ferment happening in church and culture that led up to the Reformation: corruption among clergy, the church teaching a merit-based salvation, the Pope seen as Christ s direct representative and the people not permitted to read the Bible in their own language. John Wycliffe, an English cleric in the mid-1300 s, began a pre-reformation reformation. Though he was excommunicated, his ideas began to spread throughout Europe.) The writings of Wycliffe resonated with the Czech priest Jan (John) Hus and stirred his interest in the Bible. As a result, Hus and other reform-minded priests and lay persons in Prague, began preaching from the Bible and included theological themes first articulated by Wycliffe. The Pope excommunicated Hus. The local population, however, backed Hus so he continued preaching and teaching to his congregation of 3,000. But Hus bold preaching cost him the support of the king in addition to that of the Pope. An edit was issued: no citizen in Prague could receive Communion or be buried on any church grounds as long as Hus continued his ministry. To spare the city, Huss withdrew to the countryside and for the next two years wrote a number of treatises including his most important title, The Church, which he sent to Prague for public reading. In it, he argued that Christ alone is head of the Church and not the Pope. In addition, a Pope, through ignorance or love of money can make mistakes and to go against an erring pope is faithfulness to Christ. In November, 1414, Hus was urged by the Holy Roman Emperor Sigismund to come to the Council of Constance to present is views and doctrine. Hus was assured safe passage. But when he arrived at the Council meeting, he was promptly arrested in chains and told to recant. Hus refused. On July 6, 1415, Hus was burned at the stake where he is reported to have said, Lord Jesus, it is for thee that I patiently endure this cruel death. I pray thee to have mercy on my enemies. Hus martyrdom only increased the pre-reformation reformation. His death led to a revolt against the papacy in most of Czechoslovakia. Despite repeated efforts by the popes to stamp out this movement, it grew. Today s Moravian Bretheren Church is a direct off-shoot from this movement and would play an instrumental role in the conversion of John and Charles Wesley. WHERE DOES THE CHOIR GO? This is a question I hear from many of our church members on Sunday s during July and August. Some go no where while others go off to exotic places such as Costa Rica, Michigan, Wisconsin, Colorado, Dallas, and maybe Houston. You get the idea! Yes, some of them do travel but many just enjoy being a regular church member sitting with their spouse and enjoying worshiping TOGETHER. Not only do they get to sit with their spouse but they also take advantage of sitting in a different location among the congregation for a different view of things. But there are those that still stay faithful in the choir section and sit as a big happy family. They are a wonderful group of people to work with each week and I do miss them when they are not here as a choir in July and August. Feel free to tell each of them how much you miss them and that you are looking forward to their return in September. UPCOMING SPECIAL MUSIC Not all choir members get to take the whole time off! Sundays of July and August will have many kinds of special music in worship. As of now there is a MEN S Ensemble planned to sing on July 16 and a WOMEN S Ensemble singing in August. There will also be solos, duets, and other group specials. I plan on still having the NBS (Nothing But Strings) gospel Sunday and You Pick the Hymns Sunday. Remember, the music is not taking a break for the summer. It is expanding itself in other ways! Hope you come to church and enjoy each Sunday.

7 Benevolence As you may recall, our Benevolence Committee, through a generous donation to the Benevolence Fund from a member of our Church Family, was able to assist Vet Rides in purchasing a much needed new van to transport Vet patients to and from doctor and V.A. Hospital appointments. We are blessed to be in a place and time to help make a difference. Ken Lindgren, Benevolence Chair A heartfelt thanks goes out to all of the men who helped to set up and take down many, many chairs and arranged tables for a very busy month of May. To every person from the regular chair team and the Men of Faith, your assistance did not go unnoticed, nor unneeded. Also, the help from the ladies groups for covering and decorating tables was gratefully welcomed and a pleasure to coordinate. Jim Hower To the members of the Church at Horseshoe Bay, Carolyn and I wish to thank pastors Malcolm and Johnny, The Prayer Groups and Members of our Church Family for the support thru thoughts and prayers on our behalf on the loss of our son David Lon McGrew on January 25th. He was our oldest child and the only one living of our three children. We take comfort in our faith that God had plans for him. Lon has joined his sisters and our Lord Jesus in heaven and wait for our someday arrival and reunion. We continue to be blessed with a family of four grandsons and a great grandson. John and Carolyn McGrew
