2 CHAPLAIN S REPORT Dear brother Knights, Nothing new to report at this time. Your chaplain and brother in Christ, Fr. Ray Masse GRAND KNIGHT S REPORT Brothers: Well this is my last Grand Knight s report and I would like to thank all the volunteers who donate their time to help our K of C Family to be the success that it is. It has been my honor to serve the council as Grand Knight and I know that Dennis Rousseau will do a great job as the new Grand Knight. I would like to congratulate all who stepped up and took positions on next year s executive. We still have the election of the Columbian club, which is the executive in charge of the business of the hall, so if you were nominated and wish to stand for the position and are unable to attend please submit a letter of intent -you can it to me at KRNL1500@HOTMAIL.COM or drop it off at the hall and have it put in the Grand Knight s folder. Our 75th anniversary is this fall and we are having a memorial book made for this occasion, so if you have any photos of events that have happened please get in touch with Larry Bezaire or Paul Sylvester as they are Chairing this endeavour. There will be another chicken and sliders dinner June25 th. So once again I would like to thank all who volunteer their time to help our hall and Council to be so successful. On November 12, 2016 this year we are celebrating 75 years as Council #2844 your Council. If anyone has photos or items of interest to put in a commemorative booklet, please let me know. Chairman Larry Bezaire A WORD FROM THE DIRECTOR OF VOCATIONS AND SEMINARIANS DIOCESE OF LONDON, ONTARIO Appreciation, ordination and celebration: Dear brother Knights, Vocations have been highlighted in many ways this past month. A large gathering of faithful from the Chatham-Kent region came out to St. Joseph s Hall for a Vocations/Clergy appreciation evening sponsored by our fellow Knights. A great meal was served and it was an occasion to show our appreciation to our priests, religious sisters and permanent deacons from the area. So often we only hear

3 of the stories when priests and religious fall into scandal that we forget to show our gratitude for their faithfulness in ministry. A few days later we celebrated the ordination of seminarian Glen Ball to the transitional diaconate at Good Shepherd Parish, Lakeshore. Deacon Glen hails from Ridgetown, Ontario and has a degree in geology and is an expert tomato farmer! He will be returning for his final year at St. Peter s Seminary in preparation for ordination to the priesthood. Finally, we celebrated the priesthood with the funeral of Fr. Vince Gleeson. It was good to see so many Knights come out to pray for him and to give thanks to God for the 56 years of faithful ministry that he provided our diocese. Fr. Vince spent several years at our Diocesan Mission in northern Peru, where he began a credit union to help poor farmers and so that children may have school supplies each September. At priest s funerals, before the final prayer, all priests sing the Salve Regina (Hail Holy Queen) as a send off for our brother. As we honoured Our Lady during the month of May, it was quite comforting to know that one of her sons was welcomed home to the house of the Father. With my prayers, Fr. But we are still looking for HELP!! Evan is looking at setting up a team of people to help out at lunches during the week from 11:30 till 1:30PM. It has been really busy and impossible for the bar tender to keep up so people such as Dennis (Dennis works midnights and should be sleeping) have jumped in at the last minute to help out. If we can get a number of volunteers a schedule can be worked out in order to spread out the time for all involved. Your help is appreciated. Don t be shy it is not very hard work and we can use people of all abilities you do not have to be a cook!!!! 4 Brothers: This will be my last article written as the President of the McGregor Columbian Club. I can't believe how fast the past two years have gone by. This has definitely been a learning experience for me, and I feel very blessed to pass down my newly acquired knowledge to the next K of C member who will be President. Our K of C used to be in a very unstable financial position as little as four years ago, but we are doing very well since that time. I could go into a lot of detail about the many different things we have done to improve our building and product as a business, but I feel like our success needs to be attributed to one thing in general. To our volunteers: I can't thank you enough. It's because of every single one of you that we have been able to work and continue to work to show everyone in our society how important this building is to us. You continue to help out with just about everything we need, from cooking meals to electrical & plumbing work to product purchasing to event planning. None of this could be done if you weren't willing to help out, and for that, I thank you all a million times. I want to thank my fellow McGregor Columbian Club board members who have been very supportive and influential over my time with them as President. Evan, Kevin, Dale, Frank, Glen and Neil have all been amazing when it comes to advice on just about anything with the hall. I am forever grateful for having the opportunity to work with them. I want to thank all the groups affiliated with the McGregor K of C with who I've had the pleasure of working. The Squirettes of Mary, Columbian Squires, Catholic Women's League, Order of Alhambra, Ladies Auxiliary, the Bingo crew and the Breakfast crews have been extremely helpful with the operation of the K of C and I can't thank all of you enough for everything you do for us. I could be writing for a very long time thanking everyone for everything they've done, but there's a couple people I need to thank individually. First, Evan and Laura Belanger. You two have been my rock while I've been President. You've always been there when I needed advice, when I needed to complain, when I needed support. Thank you both so very much. Also, I would like to thank Dale & Marcella Martin and Kevin for passing down so much of their expertise with the McGregor K of C so we could make our building a better place. Marcella has also been a very good listener when I needed to complain. Lastly, I want to thank my family for always being supportive of me with everything I've taken on with the Knights of Columbus. It's been a rough go after my wife Lynn passed away from cancer but being able to volunteer in such a great atmosphere has made it all the more easier to move forward. Special thanks to my son Joe who always edits and proofreads my President addresses when it's time to send them in. I look forward to what the future brings to our Knights of Columbus family. Hopefully, I'll be able to see all of you with our new board, and our newest volunteers. Keep on keeping on. Fraternally Dennis Rousseau President McGregor Columbian Club DISTRICT DEPUTIES REPORT Dear Brother Knights and families, As our fraternal year comes to an end I need to thank so many people who helped me during my first term as District Deputy. Thanks to all the Grand Knights and their executives, who have helped when filing all their paperwork on time? Also for all their help during the events that were held during this past year. Yes thanks to everyone who has been elected to new positions. I also would like to thanks everyone who was nominated and stood in the elections. I am looking forward to working with all the newly executives. Also thank the wives, girlfriends and family members of all our nights, they give up lots and also help out lots to keep the Knights of Columbus together and going through all the meeting nights and volunteering and so on. We are fortunate to be having a 4 th Degree in our area. This would help you out allowing keeping the cost down. Please step up and be in the Degree that shows themselves at Parades, Funerals and many other functions. Please have a safe summer with family and friends. Last lets all keep Christ in hearts and minds during the summer months. District Deputy ONE MEMBER, PER COUNCIL, PER MONTH KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS INSURANCE HOW MUCH WILL SHE HAVE TO LIVE ON? On average, women live several years longer than their spouses. 3

5 Together for many years, couples have had busy careers, raised children, and paid tuition fees to educate them. Eventually they may look forward to gardening, traveling, and playing with the grandkids together when retired. Unfortunately, the majority of women will spend a good portion of their retirement years alone because, on average, women live several years longer than their spouses. Both partners in a long-term relationship, at least need to understand the implications that this could have on their joint financial retirement and estate plans. Beneficiary Selections. Make sure that the proper beneficiary designations, where applicable, have been made on investments such as segregated funds and RRSPs/RRIFs. This will allow for a tax-free transfer of these investments. Retirement Savings Shortfall. Consider purchasing life insurance on the male partner to provide additional capital, which the woman can invest to make up for any shortfall in her remaining retirement savings. Capital Gains Liabilities. Life insurance can cover any income tax liabilities that may be payable by the estate on capital gains on the death of the second spouse. Therefore, a jointlast-to-die life insurance policy can be purchased, designed to pay after the death of both spouses to cover those needs. Women and Pensions. Many women will have their spouse's pension reduced if the spouse or partner predeceases them. I urge all Knights of Columbus members to take full advantage of their membership.
