All members are welcomed and encouraged to participate. trestleboard@washingtonlodge4.org Visit our web page Founded in 1857 on the Level Acting by the Plumb Parting on the Square Greetings from the East. What a month we had in December. We conferred the sublime degree of Master Mason upon Brother Justin Mataliano in concert with North Bank Lodge in Washougal; and hearty congratulations to him. Our Junior Warden, Brother Dean Roettger put on a FEAST for our Christmas dinner. Nearly everyone went home with some turkey. Our Senior Warden, Brother Tom Clark offered a moving introduction to the presentation of an Honorary Past Master title to Brother Tudor Davis. W.B. Tudor s son, W.B. Fred Davis, placed a Past Masters jewel about his neck. What did W.B. Tudor have to say? I m going to sleep with this on. Several of the Brethren gathered at a weekly COB gathering to watch Santa Claus receive good little boys & girls and some not-so-little boys & girls. Santa s lap may never be the same. Eight members of our lodge attended an installation across the river. And four of them were installed as officers of that lodge. At a special meeting, we voted to grant the V.M.T.I. to accept a different offer on the sale of the building. And from all indications, it appears now that we will once again host our annual Burns Night at the VMC on January 30, It would seem that we have clearly kept with CHANGE & LEARN to the Nth degree. Now that the winter holiday season has past we must look to the future. This road need not be rough and rugged so long as we all pull together in a united effort. The architectural plans will be submitted to the City of Vancouver for approval and the bids for remodeling critically reviewed by the Vancouver Masonic Facility Committee. Both Washington 4 and Mount Hood 32 will be kept up to date on the progress clearly and transparently with reasonable and acceptable recommendations. It is important that there be no misunderstanding as to where we are and where we are headed. There remains to be some little things to do at the new location and clean-up/work days are going to be needed and scheduled. Someone referred to this as sweat-equity. Each of us can contribute a little sweat-equity to the new location. Moving trash cans on wheels, sweeping, picking up clutter, wiping down shelves and walls, hustling water bottles (filled with water and nothing else), even just being present and cheering others on are things that all of us are able to do. No task is too great nor too small nor our stations too high. It was recently my pleasure to see Very Worshipful Brother Mark run a vacuum across a carpet and, with a little help, tear down an obsolete desk. So when the cleanup/work days are scheduled, make a concentrated effort to make your mark as a Mason. My Brethren, we are a good body of men. Let us go forward from good to great. Worshipful Brother David Rice
2 Wise Words from our Immediate Past Master Examine Yourself, Brother Leon Hyneman (1860). From World s Masonic Register. Philadelphia: J. B. Lippincott & Co We assume that Freemasonry links its membership in the golden chain of fraternity that it cements friendships that it elevates its disciples morally and intellectually that it restrains the passions that the recipients of its mysteries become better, more virtuous, more useful, and better fitted to enjoy the communion of the just made perfect in the celestial sphere; but in assuming this, let each member of the craft examine himself closely, and answer the questions, if since his admission into the order he has made any advancement in developing the spiritual part of his nature? in unfolding the internal qualities of his hear and mind? if he has become a better man than he was before? more faithful to his fellow-man? more true to himself and to his God? It is vain to assume that Freemasonry improves and elevates those who are initiated into its mysteries, if the effect is not visible in the life and conduct of its disciples. We do not hesitate to assert that if Freemasons will live up to the principles of Freemasonry, that they will become better, more useful and more virtuous men. Then it follows, as a matter of course, that those who are not benefited by their connection with the fraternity, who have not improved in their moral nature, who have made no progress in developing the internal qualities of the heart and mind, have not gained a true knowledge of Freemasonry. Examine yourself, Brother, and see how the case stands with you; if you have improved by your connection with the Masonic Institution. I hope you enjoyed this article. More like this to follow in the coming months, Word of the Day Brothers, while the Lodge was enjoying the holiday pot-luck and fellowship with Brothers, family, and friends on Thursday, December 17th, I was in the air, returning from a business trip to El Paso, TX. When I settled in to my desk the next morning, I took a few moments to bring my Page-A-Day 365 New Words A Year desk calendar up to date. Most of you will recognize the Masonic importance of the word for December 17th: cavil \ ka-vǝl\ v: to raise trivial and frivolous objection You must be joking! That s just one of the things you might be tempted to exclaim if you found yourself quarreling with a caviler and you d be right, etymologically speaking at least. Cavil derives from the Latin verb cavillari, meaning to jest or to raise silly objections, which, in turn, derives from the Latin noun cavilla, meaning raillery. Sincerely and fraternally, Gordon Johnson Don t forget we are all Scot s on January 30th. 2
3 A Celebration of the life and times of Brother Robert Burns Burns Night is annually celebrated on or around January 25 th in celebratory tribute to the life, works and spirit of the great Scottish Bard (poet), Robert Burns. The first Burns Night supper was held at Burns Cottage by friend of the late Brother on July 21, 1801, the fifth anniversary of his death. Most Burns Night suppers are a sort of time honored event including the eating of a traditional Scottish meal including Haggis, the drinking of Scotch whisky and recitation of works by Burns. Of course, there is music from bag pipes ranging from Scotland the Brave to My Love She s But a Lassie Yet. The traditional Burns Night at the Vancouver Masonic Center brings together Free Masons, free men, lovely ladies, and adorable children from around the area and beyond. It s a pleasure and honor that Worshipful Brother Preston Marshall and Worshipful Brother Dave Coffing not only plan and prepare the entire event but cook up the haggis as well. This year s Burns Night is set for January 30, 2016 beginning at 6:00 PM (or before if you feel so inclined) at the Vancouver Masonic Center 2500 NE 78 th St. Vancouver, WA. Bring your favorite bottle of Scotch whisky. Invite your friends. Let s make this celebration one that shall be remembered for decades to come. The wearing of your kilt is optional but recommended!!!!! 3
4 From The West Ding! Ding! Ding! Oh, did Christmas time pass us by already? I heard a fella tell me I ought not wish a Merry Christmas because it might offend people who aren t Christians. I was a bit taken aback, and this was long before I ever joined the Craft. I wondered who would be offended by this. If you are a Christian, then you know why I would wish you a Merry Christmas. But what if you aren t a Christian? Can you be offended that I wish you merriment on a day that is not important to you, but is to my culture? Should I, as a Christian, be offended that a Hindu were to wish me Happy Holi? Or a Jew, Happy Chanukah? Or an atheist, Merry Winter Solstice? Or a fan of Seinfeld, a Happy Festivus? And then I realized that these are not objections to be taken on their face. No they aren t. No person to be taken seriously would be offended by generic well wishing's. The people that are quick to object to well wishing's are those to be avoided. They don t want to be friends with anyone. We Masons only want those who are accepting of all cultures. We want to be friends with all good men who share our love of humanity and our love of a Higher Power. And no matter what you believe, I wish you A Very Merry Christmas. And you can quote me on that. Post it to your social media of choice. And if you are offended by the well wishing's of a community oriented man dedicated to his family and friends? Then I doubly wish you God Bless. Tom Clark. 5 From the South What a great December to close out an amazing year!!!!!!!!! Santa was a big hit with kids and the food was flowing free!!!! It was great to see all you Brothers and your families at the Christmas dinner. We had 78 people at our Christmas dinner. All I can say to that is WOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! For all you Brothers that couldn t make it, you were missed. Having Tudor Davis as our new Honorary Past Master really topped off an incredible year. Now it is time for an even more amazing new year!!!!!!! I will do my best as your Junior Warden to give everything I can of myself to ensure no one starves to death during our meetings and of course, that no one goes thirsty. Menu for the stated meeting January 2016: Beer battered fish and chips are on the way!! WHOO HOOOO!!!!!!!!!! I know that this has been a favorite of many a brother!!! There is a great possibility that we may have more than one type of fish as well. There will also be a vegetarian option available as well. ALSO, there may also be a very extra special treat available to those who arrive early for some Brotherly fellowship. I m contemplating 3 different recipes for our special meeting, so the menu is to be determined at this point. Whichever one is decided upon, you won t want to miss it!!! It WILL be amazing!!!
