11 11 SOURCE E The film Kingdom of Heaven The film Kingdom of Heaven focuses on the crusading movement in the years shortly before the Third Crusade [1187]. The highlight of the film is the Muslim leader Saladin s attack on Crusader-held Jerusalem, and the events leading up to the capture of the city. It was directed by Ridley Scott (Gladiator, Robin Hood) and released in The film cost $130 million to make and initially made $47 million at the box office in the US (although earnings overseas eventually brought in over $200 million). [For copyright reasons, this resource cannot be reproduced here. See p 13.] A selection of Kingdom of Heaven reviews, from the online cinema review site Rotten Tomatoes: 1. Time Out (online entertainment magazine): This intelligent epic movie provides a strikingly balanced version of relations in the Middle East at the time. 2. Brandon Flibs, film critic: In this era of religious and political tension, director Ridley Scott aims to understand both the Christian and the Muslim side of history and show that coexistence is possible. Some will see the film as a politically correct response to the problem of terrorism. Others will see it as a vision for future harmony. 3. Crusader historian Peter Granger called the film dangerous to East-West relations, claiming the movie s biased and flawed approach is fuel for Islamic fundamentalists [those with very strong Islamic beliefs]. 4. Dr. Nancy Caciola, a medieval historian, considered the film a responsible depiction of the period, despite the various inaccuracies and fictionalized / dramatized details. 5. Crusader historian Paul Halsall supports director Ridley Scott, claiming that historians can t criticize filmmakers for making the editing and directorial decisions they have to make Wesley Lovell, film critic: The one good thing anyone can say about Scott s film is that it paints the Muslims in a good light instead of the typical negative stereotyping that usually goes on with this type of story.
