1 Haere Ra, Tiki Left: Tiki speaking at Te Niho o te Atiawa, Parihaka, in 1977 with Bishop Paul Reeves Right: Tiki at the Waitara land bill hearings in 2017 (photos courtesy of Vivian Hutchinson) The Venerable Tikitūterangi (Tiki) Raumati ONZM Archdeacon Tiki was a giant within Te Haahi Mihinare, and Te Pihopatanga. He was one of our great ministers and kaumatua leaders, having been ordained at St Mary's in 1965 and served in many parishes in Waipu, Wellington and Waikato/Taranaki. A proud member of Ngāti Mutunga and Te Atiawa, Archdeacon Tiki was kaumatua for St Mary s Cathedral in Taranaki, patron to countless community initiatives, and kaitautoko to whānau and hapū throughout Taranaki and beyond. His passionate commitment to gospel and people will be his unique legacy. His challenge to us was to form a future together by a genuine reconciling of our past, and that is a work that we must continue. At his request, Tiki has been interred in the St Mary's churchyard, only the second interrment since 1970, and the first Maori person to be buried here. He saw this as a way of continuing his challenge to us. Our prayers and sympathy are for his wife, Wilma, children Roimata, Hāmiora, Whitihana, and Inia, and all his mokopuna. (In the name of God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen.) You will do all right, if you obey the most important law in the Scriptures. It is the law that commands us to love others as much as we love ourselves. Liturgist Come, let us worship together and share our witness of God's living presence in the world. The Confession and Absolution / Te Hohou-i-te-rongo Please sit. Liturgist We have failed to love you with all our heart and to be good stewards of your creation: Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Liturgist We have failed to take up the cross of discipleship and to be good stewards of your gospel: Christ, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Liturgist We have failed to be faithful members of your church and to be good stewards of your spiritual gifts: Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. God forgives you. Forgive others; forgive yourself. 4 Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen. Liturgist Kia mau te rongo o te Karaiti ki o tatou ngakau. The peace of Christ rule in our hearts. The word of Christ dwell in us richly. The Collect Gathering Prayer is said together / Hei konei te inoi o te rä Healing God, you speak into the hurting and wounded places; empower us to speak your vision of wholeness, and turn us to action in the face of injustice, that empowered by the Spirit we may be agents of your healing love, in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen. Please be seated for the Readings / Nga Karaipiture E noho Reader A Reading from the book of Isaiah [chapter 35:4-7a] Say to those who are of a fearful heart, Be strong, do not fear! Here is your God. He will come with vengeance, with terrible recompense. He will come and save you. Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf unstopped; then the lame shall leap like a deer, and the tongue of the speechless sing for joy. For waters shall break forth in the wilderness, and streams in the desert; the burning sand shall become a pool, and the thirsty ground springs of water. Hear what the Spirit is saying to the Church. Reader Thanks be to God. A Reading from the letter of the Apostle James [chapter 2:1-10,14-17] My brothers and sisters, do you with your acts of favouritism really believe in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ? For if a person with gold rings and in fine clothes comes into your assembly, and if a poor person in dirty clothes also comes in, and if you take notice of the one wearing the fine clothes and say, Have a seat here, please, while to the one who is poor you say, Stand there, or, Sit at my feet, have you not made distinctions among yourselves, and become judges with evil thoughts? Listen, my beloved brothers and sisters. Has not God chosen the poor in the world to be rich in faith and to be heirs of the kingdom that he has promised to those who love him? But you have dishonoured the poor. Is it not the rich who oppress you? Is it not they who drag you into court? Is it not they who blaspheme the excellent name that was invoked over you? A member of the Community of the Cross of Nails Page 4

5 You do well if you really fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, You shall love your neighbour as yourself. But if you show partiality, you commit sin and are convicted by the law as transgressors. For whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point has become accountable for all of it. What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if you say you have faith but do not have works? Can faith save you? If a brother or sister is naked and lacks daily food, and one of you says to them, Go in peace; keep warm and eat your fill, and yet you do not supply their bodily needs, what is the good of that? So faith by itself, if it has no works, is dead. Hear what the Spirit is saying to the Church. Thanks be to God. At 10am we sing this hymn in preparation for the Gospel 1. Amazing grace! How sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me. I once was lost, but now I m found; was blind, but now I see. 2. Twas grace that taught my heart to fear, and grace my fears relieved. How precious did that grace appear the hour I first believed. 3. Through many dangers, toils and snares I have already come. Tis grace that brought me safe thus far, and grace will lead me home. 4. The Lord has promised good to me, his word my hope secures; he will my shield and portion be as long as life endures. 5. When we ve been there ten thousand years, bright shining as the sun, we've no less days to sing God s praise than when we first begun. Please stand and turn to face the Gospel and the Cross... / Ka tu te katoa Reader Hear the Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to St Mark [chapter 7:24-37] Praise and Glory to God. From there Jesus set out and went away to the region of Tyre. He entered a house and did not want anyone to know he was there. Yet he could not escape notice, but a woman whose little daughter had an unclean spirit immediately heard about him, and she came and bowed down at his feet. Now the woman was a Gentile, of Syrophoenician origin. She begged him to cast the demon out of her daughter. He said to her, Let the children be fed first, for it is not fair to take the children s food and throw it to the dogs. But she answered him, Sir, even the dogs under the table eat the children s crumbs. Then he said to her, For saying that, you may go the demon has left your daughter. So she went home, found the child lying on the bed, and the demon gone. Then he returned from the region of Tyre, and went by way of Sidon towards the Sea of Galilee, in the region of the Decapolis. They brought to him a deaf man Please take note of your nearest exit. Page 5 Emergency assembly point: Vets for Pets car park

6 who had an impediment in his speech; and they begged him to lay his hand on him. He took him aside in private, away from the crowd, and put his fingers into his ears, and he spat and touched his tongue. Then looking up to heaven, he sighed and said to him, Ephphatha, that is, Be opened. And immediately his ears were opened, his tongue was released, and he spoke plainly. Then Jesus ordered them to tell no one; but the more he ordered them, the more zealously they proclaimed it. They were astounded beyond measure, saying, He has done everything well; he even makes the deaf to hear and the mute to speak. This is the Gospel of Christ. Praise to Christ the Word. There follows the sermon / Te Kauwhau. The preacher today is Canon Sue Pickering. Please stand for the Affirmation of Faith / Te Whakapono Liturgist Let us declare our faith in God. We believe in God the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named. We believe in God the Son, who lives in our hearts through faith, and fills us with his love. We believe in God the Holy Spirit, who strengthens us with power from on high. We believe in one God; Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen. A Time of Prayer / Nga Inoi a te Iwi Liturgist Let us pray for the church and the world, giving thanks for God's goodness Our intercessions end with The Lord's Prayer/Te Inoi a te Ariki Kua akona nei tatou e to tatou Ariki, ka inoi/waiata tatou E tō mātou Matua i te rangi, kia tapu tōu Ingoa. May your chiefly rule come May it happen as seems good to you on the earth, in the same way as it is in heaven. Give us now our bread for this day. Confiscate our sins as we wipe out those of the people who sin against us. Do not let us be led into enticement; But make us have life out of evil. Yours also the chiefly rule, the strength, and the glory. Ever and ever and ever. Amen. Please stand for the Ministry of the Sacrament / Te Minitatanga o te Hakarameta Jesus said: ' Love one another. As I have loved you, so you are to love one another.' Kia tau tonu te rangimarie o te Atua ki a koutou. The peace of God be with you. And also with you. The Lord, ye know, is God indeed; without our aid he did us make: we are his folk, he doth us feed, and for his sheep he doth us take. 3. O enter then his gates with praise, approach with joy his courts unto; praise, laud and bless his name always, for it is seemly so to do. 4. For why? the Lord our God is good, his mercy is for ever sure; his truth at all times firmly stood, and shall from age to age endure. 5. To Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, the God whom heaven and earth adore, from us and from the angel-host be praise and glory evermore. The Preparation of the Gifts / Te Whakatikatika I Te Ohaoha God of all creation, you bring forth bread from the earth and fruit from the vine. 8 It is the joy of our salvation, God of the universe, to give you thanks through Jesus Christ. You said, Let there be light ; there was light. Your light shines on in our darkness. For you the earth has brought forth life in all its forms. You have created us to hear your Word, to do your will and to be fulfilled in your love. It is right to thank you. You sent your Son to be for us the way we need to follow and the truth we need to know. You sent your Son to give his life to release us from our sin. His cross has taken our guilt away. You send your Holy Spirit to strengthen and to guide, to warn and to revive your Church. Therefore, with all your witnesses who surround us on every side, countless as heaven s stars, we praise you for our creation and our calling, with loving and with joyful hearts: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed are you, most holy, in your Son, who washed his disciples feet. I am among you, he said, as one who serves. On that night before he died he took bread and gave you thanks. He broke it, gave it to his disciples, and said: Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you; do this to remember me. After supper, he took the cup, and gave you thanks. He gave it to them and said: Drink this. It is my blood of the new covenant, shed for you, shed for all, to forgive sin; do this to remember me. Therefore with this bread and wine we recall your goodness to us. God of the past and present, we your people remember your Son. We thank you for his cross and rising again, we take courage from his ascension; we look for his coming in glory and in him we give ourselves to you. Send your Holy Spirit, that we who receive Christ s body may indeed be the body of Christ, and we who share his cup draw strength from the one true vine. Called to follow Christ, help us to reconcile and unite. Called to suffer, give us hope in our calling. For you, the heavenly one, make all things new; you are the beginning and the end, the last and the first. Praise, glory and love be yours, this and every day, from us and all people, here and everywhere. Amen. [silence] A member of the Community of the Cross of Nails Page 8

Please sit for this quiet prayer (sung at 10am) Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us. After Communion this prayer / Nga Inoi mo Muri I te Hapa Bountiful God, at this table you graciously feed us with the bread of life and the cup of eternal salvation. Father, we offer ourselves to you as a living sacrifice through Jesus Christ our Lord. Send us out in the power of your Spirit to live and work for your praise and glory. Amen.
