10 PRAIRIE PRESS Page 10 Delta Kappa Gamma Society International October 17, 2014 Contact: Sharon Cole, or If you were born before 1935 and taught school in Wyoming, then you are encouraged to submit your biography or an autobiography to the Wyoming chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, Alpha Xi State for publication. Pioneer teachers were the backbone of our education system and this project will serve as a way to protect that legacy. Originally scheduled for publication earlier this year, coordinators have agreed to extend the deadline to November 2014 for those interested in submitting their story. The group is gathering stories to be published in Volume V of Let Your Light Shine, a compilation of histories about those women who had the determination and perseverance to teach despite many untold hardships. The publication will feature photographs and stories of the early times those times when a young single woman taught a family of seven in a one room schoolhouse or like those times when wood stoves weren t enough to keep the children warm, or like those times when the students themselves had to help teach the younger children. These women educators, many of them not much older than their students, overcame many hardships in an effort to provide the untamed west with a sense of stability. These are the stories that need to be told and kept for future generations, said project coordinator Sharon Cole. If you know anyone who was a pioneer teacher in Wyoming during the early days, please call Sharon Cole in Gillette at for more information. They will provide you with a suggested outline and encourage you to share those stories so the legacy of pioneer teaching in Wyoming is not lost. Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, Alpha Xi State promotes professional and personal growth of women educators and excellence in education. It strives to inform its members of current economic, social, political and educational issues. Cole said that publishing histories of pioneer teachers helps the statewide organization meet its purpose. Don t delay in becoming involved in the fifth edition of Let Your Light Shine. The deadline is coming up very soon
