5 KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS COUNCIL #7131 SAINT ANDREW CATHOLIC CHURCH 2628 DEL PRADO BOULEVARD CAPE CORAL, FL Meeting Minutes of October 9, 2018, held at St. Andrew Parish Hall are as follows: Grand Knight Mitch Morgan called the meeting to order at 7:02 PM. Opening prayers led by Chaplin Fr. Paul Nguyen. Pledge of Allegiance and opening ode followed. Roll Call of Officers: All officers were present with the exception of Inside Guard Joe Beato and Outside Guard Jack Orth, both of whom were excused. There were no VISITORS. Minutes of the previous meeting were read by Recorder Joe Neelon, and were approved as read. GRAND KNIGHT S REPORT: Grand Knight Mitch Morgan announced our new chaplin, Fr. Paul Nguyen. He described a communication issue between the Knights and the school administration, informing the members that all communication with the school admin must go through Brother Marius. He also announced that the parish clarified the alcohol policy by saying BYOB is allowed at Knights functions, but not alcohol sales. He listed several charitable donations made by the council during the past month. TREASURER S REPORT: Treasurer Don Huffer referred members to the Knight Life newsletter for details of the Council s bank balance and allocations. BILLS AND COMMUNICATIONS: Recorder Joe Neelon read the bills for various council activities. He also read letters of appreciation from various organizations, including the Brother Pio Charitable Foundation. FINANCIAL SECRETARY S REPORT: Financial Secretary Don Geske discussed some postal delays due to relocation. Grand Knight Mitch Morgan presented the membership status. REPORT OF THE TRUSTEES: Trustee Jim Mullee reported that the bills were reviewed and they recommend payment. REPORTS OF THE COMMITTEES: Life Director Rick Hellenbrand advertised the events for the remainder of 40 Days for Life; he also advertised the new Christmas magnets for sale. Faith Director Juan Cordero acquired information about 3 seminarians who we can support; he also advertised the rosary rally on the third Saturday each month, as well as other rosary opportunities. Family Director Jack Marandino described his efforts toward putting together the Consecration to the Holy Family and a Good Friday family promotion. Community Director Dave Vieceli announced the next Habitat for Humanity event for January, participation in the Global Wheelchair Mission, and donations to the Cape Coral Caring Center; he also distributed certificates for Habitat for Humanity and

6 40 Cans for Lent. Brother Chris O Conor took over the post of Membership Director. Brother Don Huffer encouraged brothers to join the 300 Club. UNFINISHED BUSINESS: Grand Knight Mitch Morgan requested ideas for how to use the parish hall since the Halloween party was cancelled. The idea of a Halloween social was presented. Grand Knight Mitch Morgan requested ideas for the disposition of Sinners and Saints tickets. Tickets cannot be sold outside the council, but council members can buy tickets. Brother Nick Cioffi requested help for the sales of the State Raffle tickets. NEW BUSINESS: Brother Don Huffer made a motion that the bills be paid. There was a second, and all brothers were in favor. Brother John Pallock and others expressed their concern that the Ladies Auxiliary did not cancel their meeting to support a Knight s memorial service. They requested the District Deputy discuss this with the Ladies. 4 th DEGREE REPORT: Brother Jack Marandino advertised the District 55 dinner/dance and this year s Wreaths Across America. He also announced a 4 th degree exemplification in Orlando on Nov. 24. There was no INSURANCE AGENT S REPORT. DISTRICT DEPUTY S REPORT: District Deputy Bob Guillery presented the status and quotas for the District and the Council. He encouraged members to stay in contact with members who miss meetings and be charitable to those who cannot pay their dues so that we can focus on recruiting and our program responsibilities. He also announced opportunities for exemplifications. CHAPLIN S REPORT: Chaplin Fr. Paul introduced himself and described his background. Acting MEMBERSHIP DIRECTOR, Jack Marandino presented 2 transfer applicants for the Council s consideration (Edward Egan and Andy Cote); Brothers Chris O Conor and Don Huffer made motions to accept these applicants, each of which was seconded, and all brothers were in favor. GOOD OF THE ORDER: A number of sick or distressed brothers and relatives were remembered. Meeting was closed with prayer by Fr. Paul Nguyen and closing ode. 9 From the Chancellor Brother Knights, At the turn of the millennium, things were a little turbulent around my household. After 10 years of marriage and 6 years of separation, I signed the divorce papers my wife had sent me. The kids were pre-teens and drama was the order of the day. I was taking care of my aging parents, and my father was severely handicapped by a stroke he had years before. At the same time, I let the bank buy me a house that was too small to fit us all, but more expensive than I should have been able to afford at the time. Somehow, we made it all work. The kids helped me with my parents, and my parents helped me with the kids. The bills got paid, though not always on time. My now-ex-wife initially didn't pay the child support she promised, but the State of New Jersey didn't take kindly to that and made sure I got a check twice a month. Still, there were times when the stress was unbearable. Too many times, on the way to Mass on Sunday mornings, I wanted to be with my thoughts and my kids more than my Lord. I'd just keep on driving past the church, and we'd end up at one of the local parks, me sitting on a bench and the kids playing on the grass or on the playground. When possible, I'd get up and join them in a game of catch, or just chase them around, being careful not to catch up with them too often and spoil their fun. As the years passed, some things got better, others didn't work out. My dad passed away. My kids grew up. But we got through it all, together. And I found ways to manage the stress. Part of that was reading my way back into my faith. And to reinforce what I was learning, listening to Catholic Answers Live to make sense of all the things CCD in the 1980's didn't bother to teach us. And eventually I re-discovered the Knights, who I'd drifted away from back in college. My thoughts linger on these things as November 6 comes near, and our biennial duty to the Republic is called upon. Things are turbulent. Drama is the order of the day. And the stress... In this issue of Knight Life, Brother Rick has provided some information to share with our relatives, friends, and neighbors about the most import issue of our time (pages 7-8). As we Knights fight for life and liberty, we need to continue fighting for church and country, for charity, unity, and fraternity. We will get through it all, and we will do it together.
