1 HAMIGDALOR CONGREGATION AM HAYAM 4839 Market Street, Unit C, Ventura, Ca Phone (805) Fax (805) Website: From The Rabbi s Study July 2013 TISHAH B AV and PASSOVER: EXILE and EXODUS Tishah B Av (Saturday night-sunday, July 28-29) commemorates moments of defeat and degradation in Jewish historical experience (see A Tishah B Av Chronicle elsewhere in this issue), most importantly the destructions of the First and Second Temples (586 BCE and 70 CE, by the Babylonians and Romans, respectively) and the subsequent exile from Eretz Yisrael. The special kinot (dirges) that we recite throughout the day consciously call attention to the biblical experience of the Exodus from Egypt, even while they mourn past destructions and wail the current abased position of the poet s generation. In The Complete Tishah B Av Service (Brooklyn: Mesorah, 1989), I found references to the Exodus in no fewer than 14 of these elegiac poems, over 30 per cent. Some allusions are tangential to the poem s central concerns, such as in Shavat Suru ( Everything Came to a Standstill ), by the sixth century master El azar Kallir. It is the first bewailed kinah on Tishah B Av morning: On the face of the Euphrates, her (i.e. Zion s) pious were mutilated; yet she remembered the splitting of the Red (Sea) even as her foundations were being destroyed. In yet other poems, such comparisons served as the fulcrum. The anonymous Eish Tukad B kirbi ( A Fire Burns within Me ) consciously contrasts the Exodus from Egypt with the Babylonian Exile: A fire (of elation) burns within me, when I recall the going out of Egypt; Laments I awaken, so that I shall always recall the going out of Jerusalem. Each half of every couplet ends alike: b tseiti Mi-Mitz-rayim b tseiti mi-rusha-layim, the going out of Egypt the going out of Jerusalem. Only the final hemistich changes: b shuvi li-rushalayim, When I return to Jerusalem! Thus this alphabetic acrostic compares the two events 23 times (twice for alef). The kinah Why is This Day Different from All (Other Days) of the Year, contrasts the sorrows of the day with the joys of Passover. Another recalls the Seder, repeating six times, Why is this Night (of the Ninth of Av) different from all the nights of the year. (See Kinot for the Ninth of Av. Brooklyn: I. Labworth, 1965, pp , 405) So what connects Tishah B Av and Passover? First, both always fall on the same night of the week. Moreover, both holy days re-enact history existentially: On Passover we were/are liberated; on Tishah B Av we were/are exiled. The Passover seder is a free person s banquet: reclining, gorging the best food, drinking wine, singing praises the most meal any one could want or have. Continued next page

2 On Tishah B Av, we have the least meal any one could expect: nothing. At the non-meal, we sit uncomfortably, without festival clothing and we sing no Hallel (songs of Praise) but, rather, the more funereal kinot. Tishah B Av and Passover thus embody the polarities of Jewish existence: Exodus and Exile. Jewish piety grounds itself in the Exodus from Egypt, and thereby re-affirms that not merely life but specifically Jewish existence has meaning. Tishah B Av challenges that model. How can we point to the Promised Land when each calamity takes us further away from it? What do we do when life s realities seem to undermine our attempts to effectuate our goals and realize our dreams? We Jews have always maintained an unshakeable faith in Divine purpose and providence for us. When we get away from our mission, G!d gives us a holy time out through a degradation, an exile, in order to give us time to re-acquaint ourselves without our highest values and noblest ideals. When we then tap into those, G!d returns us to our path. The ongoing Jewish faith in Jewish destiny has been noted by modern philosopher Karl Lowith (Meaning in History, 195): Most amazing, the strength of this faith in a Divine moral purpose in history rose to a climax just when all empirical evidence was against it (author s emphasis) The prophets saw in the ruin of Israel not a proof of the powerlessness (of G!d) but an indirect manifestation of Divine universal Power. Tishah B Av and Passover together represent not contradiction but paradox. Tishah B Av in its liturgy recalls the Exodus and thereby gives us hope that we might yet be worthy to live once again in Pesach space. Passover in its liturgy quotes Eichah, the biblical book of Lamentations the main text of Tishah B Av re-enactment to persuade us to remain true to ourselves. Passover, the time of freedom, has yet been celebrated consistently throughout history in exile. Passover s final hope, Next year in Jerusalem, yet acknowledged that Jerusalem and the Jewish soul yet lay in ruins. Today, that final affirmation rings with less pathos but yet serves to remind us that our current joy can collapse into Tishah B Av space rather abruptly if we stray from our mission. The paradox of Tishah B Av and Passover teaches us that life brings both tears and laughter. When we are open to life s vicissitudes, when we allow ourselves to feel and show our vulnerability, when we dare to dream and live holy lives, we experience the deeper power not only of these two holy times but of all of life s moments. Passover and Tishah B Av, both separately and especially mutually, remain tremendous statements of Jewish faith in G!d s moral purposes for us in history, witness G!d s care and concern not only for the Jewish people but for the universe and serve to remind us to both laugh heartily and cry profoundly and so to live as deeply and as fully as we can, each and every moment. Alevai. Rabbi J.B. Sacks

A TISHAH B AV CHRONICLE Rabbi J.B. Sacks 3 Tishah B Av is one of only two full fast days in Judaism. Tishah B Av commemorates many tragedies that befell our people. As such, it may be rightly considered as the Memorial Day of the Jewish People. The following is a listing of the major events that have been associated with Tishah B Av. Some of these did indeed fall directly on Tishah B Av. Others fell on a date very close to Tishah B Av. All of these were events that took much time for our people to recover. As such all these events have rightly been recalled in Tishah B Av services and commemorations throughout the world BCE G!d decrees that the Israelites wander for 40 years for heeding the 10 scouts bad report of the Promised Land, one year for each day the scouts were in Canaan, contending that this day Tishah B Av will be forever a day of disaster for the Jewish people. 586 BCE Babylonian armies (under Nebuchadnezzar) destroy King Solomon s Temple; we lose our sovereignty, and exile begins. 70 CE Roman legions under Titus crush the Jewish revolt, destroy the Second Temple, murder thousands and carry off most of the rest into slavery and exile. 73 CE Masada falls. Jewish zealots there commit mass suicide rather than cede to the Romans. 117 CE Romans decisively overwhelm the Jews in Alexandria. 135 CE Betar, the last stronghold of the Bar Kochba rebellion (under Rabbi Akiva s influence), is captured, with over 100,000 Jews killed. 136 CE The Roman emperor Hadrian completely plows over Jerusalem, then rebuilds it as a pagan city (Aelia Capitolina), establishing a heathen sanctuary on the Temple mount, and forbids Jews from entering the city, even to bury our dead on the Mount of Olives. Eretz Yisrael is renamed Palestina ( Philistine Land) CE The First Crusade brings destruction to the Jewish communities (over 10,000 killed in the first month alone) of the Rhine Valley CE The Second Crusade destroys the Jewish communities of Germany and France CE The Third Crusade leads to bloody anti-jewish rioting all over England CE The Jews of York are slaughtered CE The Talmud and other Holy Writings are publicly burned in Paris CE King Edward expels all Jews from England CE Jew are expelled from France CE The Spanish Inquisition begins to reclaim the souls of Jews by burning their bodies CE The Jews are expelled from Spain CE The Jews are expelled from Portugal CE The Jews are expelled from Andorra 1555 CE The Jews of Rome are forced into a ghetto CE The Jews of Florence are forced into a ghetto CE The Jews of Mantua are expelled CE Chelmnitzky, the Ukrainian national hero, and his hordes massacre Polish Jews CE The Jews are forced out of Vienna CE A two-week pogrom erupts against the Jews of Padua CE Pogroms sweep tsarist Russia CE World War I breaks out, during which many Jewish communities are wiped out in pogroms CE Arab attacks against Jews erupt over the issue of access to the Western Wall CE Hungary expels stateless Jews in Carpathian Ruthenia. A fine of 100,000 rubles is imposed on the Jews of Bazlav, Podolia (Ukraine). The SS murders 600 Jews in Targovica, Volhynia Ukraine). The Ukrainians shoot 45 Jews in the village of Otynia, Stanislavov province, Poland (Ukraine).

CE Nazis convene at Wannsee, Germany and finalize their plans for the Final Solution to the Jewish problem. The deportations to Treblinka extermination camp (Poland) begin from the Warsaw Ghetto CE From Wadovice, Cracow district (Poland), 2,000 Jews are deported to Auschwitz CE From Toulouse, France 166 Jews are deported to Auschwitz CE El Al plane shot down by terrorists, the only plane Israel lost to terrorism CE The Jewish community center in Buenos Aires was bombed, killing 86 and wounding 300 others. On June 2 nd, we had a delightful fund raiser, with our Progressive Brunch. Kudos to Eva Lowe for spearheading this event. We started off at 10 a.m. at the home of Mort & Roz Resnick where we had mimosas, bloody marys, juice, coffee, tea, yummy croissants and Danish. Most of us enjoyed our small repast on the deck of their home overlooking the channel. At 11:15 we were at the home of Eva Lowe who provided us with a delicious meal. Freshly baked panko crusted salmon, vegetable lasagna, salad, spinach cheese soufflé, rolls, cold drinks, & deviled eggs and more. Thanks to Eunice Bersley who helped with serving and made the spinach soufflé. At 1:30 we were at CAH for delicious pound cake trifle, chocolate Oreo cookie truffles, fresh fruit and coffee. We had a small silent auction and door prizes were given out. Please see pictures elsewhere in Migdalor. Once again thanks to Eva Lowe for coordinating this event and the following members who also worked on the Progressive Brunch: Elaine Hanig; Roz Resnick; Ruthy Resnick; Brenda Rich. On Saturday, July 6 th, Cantor Rosenzweig will be joining Rabbi Sacks on the Bima. Please bring your friends to our Open Houses. We need to increase our membership and your help is needed. 6 News from the Membership Committee 6 OPEN HOUSES and YOU The Membership Committee announces four scheduled open houses. What is an Open House? An Open House is a way to attract unaffiliated Jews in the area to our Am HaYam family. We open up our house so that we can welcome them, introduce ourselves to them, and hopefully they will consider coming back and, eventually, joining our very special synagogue family. At an Open House, we hope to have small conversations with potential members, but we will also have a couple of presentations to all who come by Rabbi Sacks and our President, Brenda Rich. Of course, we will provide refreshments and have membership packets prepared. Why do we need an Open House? We wish to grow our community. Additional members will provide us with more people with whom we can share our vision of Jewish life. More people means more resources to keep our Membership dues at the artificially low rate that we do charge, and it will also help us to be able to offer more programs. More people also means a larger core of people who can help out with such things as religious services, social functions, and committee work. When and Where are this summer s Open Houses? We have scheduled four Open Houses: Sunday, July 7, 3-4:30 p.m. at the home of Fil Barton in Leisure Village. Tuesday, July 23, 7-8:30 p.m. at the home of Brenda and Arnie Rich. Sunday, August 4, 3-4:30 p.m., at the home of Janice and Amnon Aharon-Ezer. Sunday, August 18, 10:00-11:30 a.m. at our Congregation Am HaYam campus. Why are the Open Houses at different places, and at different days/times? We feel that it is important to have one Open House on campus so that people can see the wonderful makom kadosh holy space that we have created, but we also feel that some unaffiliated Jews may feel uncomfortable just arriving to a campus where they may not know anyone. Having Open Houses in synagogue members homes may feel more comfortable for some people and may be closer to where some people live. By varying the times we hope to reach people with different schedules. Should we as Am HaYam members come to any of the Open Houses? We hope that EVERYONE who is available will come to the Open House on our campus on Sunday, August 18th. On that date we hope a number of our members will greet potential members, introduce them to our new Rabbi and to Board and Committee members, give them a tour of our facilities and let them experience what a warm and heimish community we are. Please let Brenda Rich know that you will be attending this Open House. For the other dates (July 7, July 23, and August 4), we want you to come, but you MUST bring a potential member. Please invite a neighbor, friend, co-worker and come with them. They will more likely want to come and indeed come if you make a date with them. At these homes, we hope to keep the ratio of members to potential members low so that there can be a maximum of one-onone conversations with potential members to answer their questions and they can start getting to know us. We feel very strongly that EVERY MEMBER should invite and accompany at least one potential member to at least one of these three open houses. We on the Membership Committee will do our best, but all of you are ambassadors of our Am HaYam family and nothing is as compelling to a potential member than a personal touch. If being a member of this special community is important to you, then bring a friend, introduce them to us, enjoy the warm conversation and nosh and we shall do our best to explain why we feel Am Hayam is vital, warm, vibrant, meaningful and worthy of their consideration. What if I cannot stay for the entire Open House? For the August 18 Open House at our site, please come even if you have only minutes time to spend, and even if you do not bring a potential member. For the off-site Open Houses, please come even if you and your guests can only spend 30 minutes or so. The main object is to help get the not-yet-affiliated through the door so that they can see and experience the potential benefits of belonging to Am HaYam. If space is limited at the Open Houses that are off-site, how do I ensure attendance for the potential member(s) and myself? Please convey that you will be attending and the name of potential member(s) to Brenda Rich ahead of time. We would like to know ahead of time, if possible, any potential member(s) you will be bringing. Parking is limited at Leisure Village, and there is security, so we need to compile a list of anyone driving to Fil s. If in doubt, however, just come!

From the Ways and Means/Membership Committee 10 WHAT MAKES AM HAYAM SO SPECIAL? We approach our three very special Open Houses Sunday, July 7th at the home of Fil Barton; Tuesday, July 23rd at the home of Brenda and Arnie Rich; Sunday, August 4th at the home of Janice & Amnon Aharon-Ezer and Sunday, August 18th at our synagogue. These events are really important to introduce new people to our synagogue so that we can grow and revitalize. We hope that everyone will come to at least one Open House with at least one potential new member. When speaking to people stress the positive aspects of Congregation Am HaYam such as how warm and heimish we are. We have a new Rabbi whose enthusiasm is contagious. We are affiliated with the Conservative Movement, where we can effectively balance our love for tradition with living our lives in modernity and women participate in all aspects of synagogue life Please feel free to use these ideas using your own words and adding your own experiences in presenting our synagogue family as a possibility for your neighbors, friends, coworkers and others. We very much look forward to meeting some of these people at our Open Houses. See you then!
