1 1 HAMIGDALOR CONGREGATION AM HAYAM 4839 Market Street, Unit C, Ventura, Ca Phone (805) Fax (805) Website: From The Rabbi s Study August 2014 WE ARE MANY Pablo Neruda s poem We are Many describes the many people who live inside each of us. When everything seems set to show me off as a man of intelligence, the fool I keep concealed on my person takes over the talk and occupies my mouth. From the Rabbi s Study The poet sees a burning house but, instead of the fireman I summon, an arsonist bursts on the scene and he is I. How various are the selves that live inside each of us? Every person experiences a certain multiplicity of self. I am large, and contain multitudes, wrote the great Walt Whitman. We are congeries of character, made of nobility, baseness, kindness, cruelty, faith and doubt. We change from minute to minute. In Emerson s words, my moods do not believe each other. This theme lies behind the rabbinic teaching that one day the evil inclination was captured. Suddenly, no one built houses, and no hen laid an egg. All of our powers are intertwined: to deny one is to diminish another. Judaism teaches not that we eliminate bits of who we are we do not do surgery on ourselves but that we bring all of us to the service of goodness and of God, arsonist and fireman alike. Rather than deny that we are many, we pull together the disparate threads of our souls for a greater service. At Sinai we come together as a community to support each other and to create something greater from all of our gifts. As we go through and take moral and emotional inventory during the month of Elul and through the Aseret Y mei T shuvah (10 Days of Repentance), we seek spiritual direction, so that we can redirect our path and so our deeds, and thereby elevate everything we are and are becoming, living as complex and as marvelous as God made us. Y hi ratzon mi-l fanecha, Adonai Eloheinu Veilohei Avoteinu Veilohei Imahoteinu, she-t chadesh aleinu shanah tovah u-m tukah. May it be Your will, o Holy One of Blessing, that this year we do not wallow in negative self-perceptions nor try to excise parts of our essential personalities, but, rather, that we try to be one not many!!! and utilize all of ourselves the good and the not-yet-good in the service of something beyond ourselves, the service of others and the service of You, so that this can be, truly, a good, sweet, holy year. Amen. Rabbi J.B. Sacks

2 2 Message from Brenda Rich Greetings: Yup! That s right. The High Holy Days are coming. As you see by the Migdalor, it is full of many, many forms that you need to complete and send back. And the good news is that some of them are on our brand, new webpage Much thanks goes to Denise Heap (who got the ball rolling), Rick Newberger, Mort Resnick and especially Jef Bratspis. So make use of the digital forms on the website and return them electronically. Much thanks to Mort Resnick for donating a computer for our office work. Lois and I really appreciate all the work you put in. This is the Chai year of the incorporation of CAH and all our events our going to have that theme. Our first fund raising event is our APPLES, HONEY & MORE PROGRAM which will take the place of our High Holy Day greeting. You will be able to send your greetings with a traditional show of your friendship by sending out apples, honey and more to members, family and friends. See the form elsewhere in the Migdalor. I am sending this message before our first Friend Raising event Baking with the Rabbi that was held on August 29th. You will have to wait until next month to hear all that went on then. BUT not to be dismayed. Bring a friend and come to our next Friend Raising event that will be held at the home of Marc Goldman on Sunday, August 10th at 2:00 p.m. Remember we need each and everyone of you to bring members into our Am HaYam family. The membership committee really wants to bring our Chavarah program back to life. You received a form with your dues invoice. I have had only 2 returned. This is a wonderful way to build friendships amongst your Am HaYam family by meeting and having events in smaller groups. So please fill out the forms. And speaking of dues. If you have not already sent in your payments either in full or partial payment, please do so today. And if at all possible, please send an additional voluntary amount. Adult Education program is also being given new life. Fran Lande, our Education Vice President has provided a form for you to send back to help her with planning programs. Let her know what you want. CAH is here for you. We already have Mondays with Mort which provides interesting and knowledgable information on the weekly Torah portions. So let Fran know more programs that you want to have. CAH is here for you!!!!!! Let us know what you want!!! Shalom, Brenda

13 13 From the Ritual Committee Who Gets the First Aliyah? Explaining Our Change in Practice The Ritual Committee decided that no longer will we call up the first aliyah by the use of Kohen (priest) and the second aliyah by Levi (priestly assistant). Rather, we will call up the first aliyah as Rishon ( first ) and the second aliyah as Sheni ( second ), except on the High Holy Days, where Rabbi Sacks has asked that we continue with the traditional practice. We wanted to apprise you all of this change and the basic reasons behind it. If you have questions regarding this, please contact Rabbi Sacks. The practice of calling up the first two aliyot as Kohen and Levi is indeed ancient. However, the assignment of these honors was not done out of any privilege or necessity of the office of the Kohen. Rather, the custom was clearly instituted merely to avoid conflicts among the members of a community over who gets the first aliyah (Mishnah Gittin 5:8; BT Gittin 59a). In most communities today, and certainly at Am HaYam, we do not engage in quarrels over who gets assigned which aliyah. Furthermore, the assignment of the first two honors to a Kohen and Levi makes management of aliyot more difficult in smaller congregations such as ours. For example, if not Levi is present, then traditionally the Kohen who received the first aliyah gets the second aliyah, even if other Kohanim are present. This could mean that in our congregation a Kohen might get two aliyot at every service. That might mean that some people would only be able to receive an aliyah once every two services once a month at Am HaYam. It hardly seems fair that the Kohen receives four times as many aliyot as anyone else and that clearly was not the intent of the practice. Finally, this change is in keeping not merely with the legal decisions of the Committee on Jewish Law and Standards of the Rabbinical Assembly of our Conservative Movement, but it has, indeed, become the standard practice of Conservative Judaism. This change will avoid having to find out every service if we have a Kohen or Levi in attendance and, then figuring out the correct or standard practice from that week s set of facts. Such discussion distracts us from the spiritual elevation of prayer and can lengthen the service. Rather, we will now be able to accord more people an aliyah to the Torah without hesitation, discussion, or distraction.

14 14 HELP CAH RAISE FUNDS WITH NO COST AND LITTLE OR NO EFFORT TO YOU Summer is here and that means family get-togethers, cold drinks and lots of food. Do you throw everything out in the trash? I recently realized by bringing home water bottles, soda cans and wine bottles from CAH and my recycles I earned $ 10 for CAH in a short period of time. Since some of the recycled came from CAH I did not count the check I donated for tax purposes but you can. LET YOUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY HELP US TOO. There are two ways you can help CAH: One way is for you to recycle and get the donation credit on your taxes: Save PLASTIC BOTTLES like water, soda, juice, etc. Save SODA CANS. Save GLASS BOTTLES and JARS. Take them to your nearest recycle center. I use the Recycle Center just behind the Ralphs near CAH at 1776 S. Victoria in Ventura. Currently the hours at this location are Tuesday Friday 10:00-4:30 with a lunch break from 1:00-1:30. It is closed Sunday and Monday. To verify hours call When you recycle you will get a voucher. You walk into Ralphs and walk out with money. Put it in a little jar or Tzedakah box and every few months add it up and write a check to CAH. It is found money for the temple and a donation toward your taxes. The second way is if you are unable to recycle it yourself you can bring it to CAH before services and I will take it home and combine it with recycles already collected. You don t even have to separate them. If you are unable to come to services I will pick up a full bag that you have collected from your home. I only ask that the bag is no smaller than a 15 gallon trash bag. Every few months I also take hazardous waste to the drop off at 880 W Verdulera St. in Camarillo. If you call first and make an appointment it will go faster. The number is Light bulbs, batteries, medication, paint, household cleaning products and electronics are all considered hazardous waste. You can bring these to CAH services and I will dispose them for you. THESE MUST BE KEPT SEPARATE from the normal recycle items and I cannot handle anything heavier than 10 pounds. I will be happy to pick up your hazardous materials if you also have a minimum 15 gallon bag of recycle items to donate to the temple. Together little incomes can add to a large income. Spread the word! Ruth Resnick
