2 In her testimony at the Eichmann trial, Rivkah Kuper describes the lighting of the Shabbat candles at Aushwitz: "When we arrived on the 18th of January, 1943 we were put into blocks at Birkenau. There had previously been horse stables Among the first things we sought were two ends of candles. Friday night we gathered together on the top tier of our block. There were then about 10 or 12 girls We lit the candles and began quietly to sing Sabbath songs We heard choked sobbing from the tiers of the bunks all around us. At first we were frightened, and then we understood. Jewish women, who had been imprisoned for months, some of them years, gathered around us and listened to the songs. Some asked us if they might also recite the blessing over the candles From then on, every Shabbat we lit candles. We had no bread, there was nothing to eat, but somehow we managed to get the candles." Baruch atah, Adonai, Eloheinu, melech haolam, asher kid'shanu b'mitzvotav, v'tzivanu l'hadlik ner shel Shabbat. Blessed are you, Adonai our God, Sovereign of the universe, who hallows us with mitzvot, commanding us to kindle the light of Shabbat. 2 P a g e
3 Prayer for Yom HaShoah Composed by the Chief Rabbi Lord Sacks Today, on Yom HaShoah, we remember the victims of the greatest crime of man against man the young, the old, the innocent, the million and a half children, starved, shot, given lethal injections, gassed, burned and turned to ash, because they were deemed guilty of the crime of being different. We remember what happens when hate takes hold of the human heart and turns it to stone; what happens when victims cry for help and there is no one listening; what happens when humanity fails to recognize that those who are not in our image are none the less in God s image. We remember and pay tribute to the survivors, who bore witness to what happened, and to the victims, so that robbed of their lives, they would not be robbed also of their deaths. We remember and give thanks for the righteous of the nations who saved lives, often at risk of their own, teaching us how in the darkest night we can light a candle of hope. Today, on Yom HaShoah, we call on You, Almighty God, to help us hear Your voice that says in every generation: Do not murder. Do not stand idly by the blood of your neighbour. Do not oppress the stranger. We know that whilst we do not have the ability to change the past, we can change the future. We know that whilst we cannot bring the dead back to life, we can ensure their memories live on and that their deaths were not in vain. And so, on this Yom HaShoah, we commit ourselves to one simple act: Yizkor, Remember. May the souls of the victims be bound in the bond of everlasting life. Amen. 3 P a g e

9 THE WALL Little Chaim builds the Wailing Wall from the wooden blocks, stronger and higher than the wall of the ghetto on Bonifraterska Street. No one can hear the police dogs barking or the lament of the ghetto street, behind the wall built by Chaim even the best shots can not destroy it, because behind this wall God hears little Chaim weeping for the destroyed temple of his childhood, barbarians did not spare a rag clown with the red nose, a plushy teddy bear, or a wooden swing in the backyard now crowded with other kids. 12 Prayer for Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day) -Anonymous Lord, remember not only the men of good will, but also those of ill will. But do not remember all the suffering they have inflicted upon us. Remember rather the fruits we have brought, thanks to this suffering: our comradeship, our loyalty, our humility, the courage, the generosity, the greatness of heart that has grown out of this. 21 Anne Frank was a young girl in Amsterdam, Holland during the terrible days of Nazi Germany. Two weeks before she and her family were discovered in the location where they had been hiding for 2 years - she wrote in her diary: "It's really a wonder that I haven't dropped all my ideals, because they seem so absurd and impossible to carry out. Yet I keep them, because in spite of everything, I still believe people are really good at heart. I simply can't build my hopes on a foundation of confusion, misery and death. I see the world gradually being turned into a wilderness. I hear the approaching thunder, I can feel the suffering of millions and yet, if I look up into the heavens, I think it will all come out right one of these days, that this cruelty will end, and that peace and tranquility will return again. In the meantime, I must hold on to my ideals for perhaps the day will come when I shall be able to carry them out." 21 P a g e

25 In Jewish life we light a candle on the anniversary of a death of a loved one. We cannot here light 6 million candles, dear as the memory is to us of every one of our martyred dead. Let us then light six candles - one for each million. Let the light of these candles signify that we remember - that we shall never forget. Their memory shall burn bright throughout all time. If Kiddush could not be recited over wine, it could be over bread. Some did not eat their daily rations so that on Friday night they could have 2 bits of bread over which to read the Kiddush.
