2 BIG MESSAGE LIVE OUTLINE BIG WORD: BUT IT IS GOOD FOR ME TO DRAW NEAR TO GOD; I HAVE PUT MY TRUST IN THE LORD GOD, THAT I MAY DECLARE ALL YOUR WORKS. PSALM 73:28 (NKJV) LEARNING OUTCOMES: At the conclusion of this lesson children will: Understand that we can draw near to God through His Learn that we grow by being obedient to God s word. Develop a hunger for God s word. BUILD YOUR MESSAGE Use the outline in the following pages to construct a message that works for you and your children s ministry. Pray, read the scripture references and choose which elements best suit your audience. Then, prepare by gathering any supplies needed. SCRIPTURE REFERENCES: 1 Samuel 15, 2 Kings 22, Psalm 34:8, Psalm 119:103, Jeremiah 22:16, Amos 8:11 Matthew 4:4, John 14:21, James 1:22-25 MY MESSAGE PLAN: SUPPLIES NEEDED: 1 BIG MESSAGE LIVE 2017 Hillsong Church
3 INTRO POLE POSITION SUPPLIES NEEDED: Screen image supplied with print material files. If had grown up to be a Formula 1 racing driver like I wanted to, there is one position I would want to be in - Pole position. In car racing, a driver in pole position starts the race in the first row in the inside lane. They start the race at the front of the pack and don t have to fight through traffic to get to first place and be in the lead. As a driver in pole position you are setting yourself up for a win. And I believe if you put the Bible in pole position, you are setting your life up for a win! Today we re talking about positioning yourself in God s word. There s lots of places we could position ourselves. If we position ourselves to be practicing playing a musical instrument, we will improve and get much better at it. If we position ourselves at church, we re going to learn more about God and make some great friends. If we If we misbehave at school, we might be positioning ourselves in detention! Where do you position yourself? In summer I like to position myself at the beach! Reminder: This is a great time to play the Big Story video to your group. We find it breaks up your Big Message Live really well and keeps the children focussed. STORYTELLING TWO KINGS SUPPLIES NEEDED: Two actors - one adult to play King Saul and a small child to play King Josiah. Costumes for each king; crowns and royal robes. A large Bible prop for king Josiah to hold. Share the story of King Saul s disobedience and King Josiah s obedience to God, by presenting a short skit. Narrator: This is the story of two kings. One king that disobeyed God s instructions and another king that obeyed God and His The first king is Saul. Saul was the first king of Israel chosen by God after the people demanded to have a king like all the other nations around them. He stood head and shoulders above everyone else. Saul: I am Saul, strong, mighty, tall and very, very good looking. (Saul winks to the crowd.) The people wanted a king and here I am. The best king in all the land. Narrator: Things seemed to be going well with Saul as king, but he had a problem. Saul: A problem you say? With me? No, that just couldn t be. Narrator: When God gave instructions, Saul didn t obey. When the time came for a sacrifice meant to be offered only by a priest, Saul couldn t wait and he offered the sacrifice himself. Saul: Well yes, that s true. I did that. What can I say, I ve got things to do, battles to win, places to go, people to rule over. Who s got time to obey? (Saul makes air quotes with his fingers.) Narrator: When Samuel the priest arrived to offer the sacrifice Samuel said, Saul, what have you done? You have acted foolishly and you have not kept the command of the Lord your God. Saul: Hmm it seems I did slip up just that once. Narrator: There were other times when Saul disobeyed God. Saul: Me? No! This is preposterous. Narrator: When it came to drawing up plans for battle, it was Samuel the priest who would hear from God and tell Saul what it was that the Lord said. Again, Saul disobeyed God and rushed into battle with his own plans. Saul: Oh are we going to bring up every time I did something wrong? (Saul throws hands up in the air and proceeds to be more and more grumpy.) Narrator: God gave Saul specific instructions to fight the evil nation of Amelek, saying, make sure you destroy everything, do not leave a trace. Saul fought the battle and won. Saul: See! I won! Narrator: But yet again Saul disobeyed God. Instead of wiping everything out, Saul spared the life of the king of Amalek and the best of his animals. Seeing Saul s disobedience Samuel said, Does the Lord really want sacrifices and offerings? No! He doesn t want your sacrifices. He wants you to obey him. You refused to do what God told you, so God has decided that you can t be king. Saul: Well that s me done with. I m outta here. See you never! (Saul storms off). 1 BIG MESSAGE LIVE 2017 Hillsong Church
4 STORYTELLING CONTINUED... Narrator: Hundreds of years later, a very unlikely king came along. (King Josiah, a young child, enters.) Narrator: This king did not stand head and shoulders above everyone else like Saul did. In fact he was only 8 years old! King Josiah grew to be a king that not only obeyed God s voice but he obeyed God s word, the Bible. It was thanks to Josiah that while the temple was being repaired, the priest found the book of the law, the first five books of the Bible that had been lost many years prior. (King Josiah picks up the Bible.) Josiah went on to restore the Word of God to its proper place. He gathered the whole nation, young and old so they could hear God s word read to them. There was no other king like young king Josiah. No other king drew near to God like Josiah did. He obeyed God with all his heart and all his soul and all his strength. Jeremiah 22:16 (NLT) says about Josiah, He gave justice and help to the poor and needy, and everything went well for him. Isn t that what it means to know me? says the Lord. Josiah did everything the Law of Moses, God s word said. He positioned himself in God s Josiah drew near to God and through His OBJECT LESSON TASTE AND SEE SUPPLIES NEEDED: Coloured jelly beans, blindfolds. LEADERS TIP: Be aware of food allergies. Choose some contestants who will join you on stage to take the Taste and See taste test! They will each be blindfolded and will taste a jelly bean and have to guess what colour it is. Then they can remove their blindfold and see if they were correct. Between each contestant recite this verse emphasising the words taste and see ; Psalm 34:8 (The Message), Open your mouth and taste, open your eyes and see how good God is. Blessed are you who run to him. This verse encourages us to draw near to God, to taste and see that He is good, that those who run to Him, draw near to Him are blessed. God s word is often described as a food, that we can taste and see God s goodness throughout. Who in the audience is hungry for jelly beans now? Did you know you can be hungry for God s Word? We hunger for the things we feed on. If we feed on computer games, we ll be hungry for more. If we feed on jelly beans, we ll be hungry for more. If we feed on watching You Tube stars, we ll be hungry for more. While these things are not entirely bad, if we live on a steady diet of these things and nothing else, will we be healthy? Or will we only crave more of what we feed on? If we feed on God s word, we ll be hungry for more. Develop an appetite for God s Matthew 4:4 (NIV), Jesus answered, It is written: Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God. If you eat too many jelly beans, you might feel sick. But you can never get too full on God s Word, you won t get sick from eating too much! And the more you eat the more hungry for His Word you will be. There s nothing else that feeds our heart and soul like the Bible. Be hungry for more and position yourself in God s POINTS 1. (Share about a time when you were really hungry.) e.g. I was in hospital last year and at one point wasn t able to eat anything for a long time. But what I did end up doing was watching TV cooking shows on the hospital TV and dream about the day coming up where I could once again enjoy food. The first thing I ate when I could was a strawberry yoghurt, and let me tell you it was the best thing I have ever eaten in my life. I could taste every single beautiful spoonful. Hunger makes us appreciate something we can take for granted. Food satisfies our hunger, helps us grow and it sustains us. God s Word is food that will satisfy us deep within, help us grow as people and sustain us throughout our life. At home, when someone calls, Dinner Time, you have to position yourself at the table in order to be fed. If you re not in that position, you don t get food. Especially if you re from a big family with lots of brothers and sisters! If you re not positioned in the Word, you re not getting fed. The Bible is a book that has been the biggest selling, most influential book in all of history. More books have been written about the Bible than any other subject. Not cat grooming, not deep sea fishing, not how to build a dog house, the Word of God! 1 BIG MESSAGE LIVE 2017 Hillsong Church
5 2. KNOWING IS NOT ENOUGH You may have heard someone say something like, living in a garage doesn t make you a car, or, eating at McDonald s doesn t make you a hamburger. Knowing the Bible doesn t automatically make you wise, it doesn t even mean you are a follower of Jesus. James 1:22-25 (NIRV) says, Don t just listen to the word. You fool yourselves if you do that. You must do what it says. Suppose someone listens to the word but doesn t do what it says. Then they are like a person who looks at their face in a mirror. After looking at themselves, they leave. And right away they forget what they look like. The important sentence here is, You must do what it says. Knowing something doesn t always equal understanding and there s a big difference between knowing the right thing and doing the right thing. We draw near to God when we position ourselves in His Word and are obedient to what it says. Jesus says in John 14:21 (NLT), Those who accept my commandments and obey them are the ones who love me. And because they love me, my Father will love them. And I will love them and reveal myself to each of them. This verse tells us that if we are obedient to God s Word He will reveal more of Himself to us. We can draw near to God through His 3. THE MOST IMPORTANT MEAL OF THE DAY. Parents love to talk about breakfast being the most important meal of the day. Get in a big breakfast and you are set up for hours of awesomeness. Eating is an incredibly important part of your everyday life and the same is true for the Bible. It should be a part of your everyday life. You can be hungry for God s Psalm 119:103 (NLT) says, How sweet your words taste to me; they are sweeter than honey. Think about the fact that you have been eating at least three times a day since you were a little baby. A meal here, a snack here. Your body is so used to eating that when it doesn t happen, you get hungry! When you read the Word of God, you don t start off with a feast. Start with a regular snack, every now and then try a full meal, and eventually over time your hunger for the Bible will grow. Amos 8:11 (NIV) The days are coming, declares the Sovereign Lord, When I will send a famine through the land not a famine of food or a thirst for water, but a famine of hearing the words of the Lord. Be hungry for more of God s Word and position yourself to hear from God and draw near to Him. 1 BIG MESSAGE LIVE 2017 Hillsong Church
