Commandment 4, Rest One Day a Week Deuteronomy 5:12-15
In Japan, they have a word for people who overwork and die --- Karoshi Young Japanese are working themselves to death Working 100 hours a week, never taking breaks
I knew an American who worked in S. Korea and he said that men in their 40s were having major health problems, kidney failure, heart problems, and other health issues that forced them to slow down or quit working
How is the Chinese work week? Those who have better paying jobs in China complain of health issues that come from the pressure and stress of the job The worker complains about insomnia, fatigue, a lack of energy, obesity, and frequent illness.
I. We all Need Rest Vss. 13,14
I can t be take a day off, I need to work 7 days a week If I don t do it now, more work is coming and I will get behind Maybe you work at a place where your boss piles on the work
Realize that you will never catch up and that your boss will always give you more work, even if you worked 24 hours a day And as I said, the more you work, the more mistakes you make God has a command that says rest, and God even rested
And everyone is to rest It is not that you rest, but you have other people doing your work That would be cheating It would be a boss taking a long break but still expecting the people to do the work while he is gone
And when you rest, you rest your mind as well Don t be thinking about work! Leave work at work As a Christian, the sabbath rest is more than just rest It is a test of your faith also Faith that God will supply our needs on the other 6 days that you work
II. How do we Keep 1 Day Holy? Vs. 12
Holy means to sanctify and that means to set it apart It is also a day that is meant to be a blessing for us and to us A day of refreshing and renewal A day to focus on God and focus on rest Realizing that all we have is from God
But maybe you remember Sunday as being a burden There were lots of rules of what you couldn t do The Pharisees of Jesus day did that with the people They made a long list of things you couldn t do And the Sabbath became a burden for the people
It was meant as a day of enjoyment For Christians there is Sunday when we come together to worship the Lord and enjoy fellowship with other Christians And enjoy ministry to others
III. Remember when you were Slaves Vs. 15
The Jews were in Egypt, they were forced to work 7 days a week There was no rest for them But with this command, God is giving them a choice as free people God the loving God wants you to rest one day a week The sabbath was meant to be a joy not a burden
IV. Jesus Teaching about the Sabbath
Jesus was in a synagogue with the people and there was a man with a shriveled hand. This man had suffered for years. The Pharisees asked Jesus, is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath? Jesus pointed out to them that if they had a sheep that fell into a hole they would pull it out of the hole to save the sheep That was work. But they didn t want a man to be healed Therefore, it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath Matt 12:12
Jesus was walking through a grainfield with his disciples And the disciples picked some of the heads of grain and ate them The Pharisees saw this and said, Why are they doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath? They were harvesting grain "The sabbath was made for man, not man for the sabbath," Mark 2:27
The Pharisees were legalistic, every little thing was breaking the law Jesus is bringing us back to the original meaning of the Sabbath It s for our enjoyment Rest and enjoy God
Observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy, as the LORD your God has commanded you Observa el día sábado, y conságraselo al SEÑOR tu Dios, tal como él te lo ha ordenado Ishike siku ya Sabato uitakase, kama BWANA, Mungu wako, alivyokuamuru.
Command 4, Rest One Day a Week Deuteronomy 5:12-15 In Japan, they have a word for people who overwork and die Karoshi Young Japanese are working themselves to death Working 100 hours a week, never taking breaks Some are pushed to suicide, some to drug use, and others to heart failure S. Korea has similar problems The teen suicide rate is very high. Children are studying 16 hours a day to get the best grade and be accepted in one of the top 3 colleges in Korea. Very few will be accepted into the schools If a child doesn t make it, he has dishonored the family And so they commit suicide. I knew an American who worked in S. Korea and he said that men in their 40s were having major health problems, kidney failure, heart problems, and other health issues that forced them to slow down or quit working When we were in Mongolia there were S. Koreans that worked 7 days a week and we saw at least 2 men in their 40s go back to Korea because of health problems More hours are not always better Studies have been done that say those who work more hours make more mistakes and injure themselves on the job Even though the S. Koreans work more hours their productivity per hour is low How is the Chinese work week? Those who have better paying jobs in China complain of health issues that come from the pressure and stress of the job The worker complains about insomnia, fatigue, a lack of energy, obesity, and frequent illness. There are experts in China that want workers to work less hours so as to raise productivity and efficiency Working 7 days a week is not good, you need rest I. We all Need Rest Vss. 13,14 It is not good to work all the time The thinking is, I have all this work to do, I need to do it! I can t be take a day off, I need to work 7 days a week If I don t do it now, more work is coming and I will get behind Maybe you work at a place where your boss piles on the work I knew a man that worked for a major drug company, Abbott It was his job to go over all the research of a new drug before it went to the market. He was supposed to find flaws. It was tedious work The work piled up on his desk and he hated to go on vacation because it piled up even more. He never caught up. And there was always the push from his boss to do more and to reach impossible deadlines What do you do when you have a job like that? Realize that you will never catch up and that your boss will always give you more work, even if you worked 24 hours a day And as I said, the more you work, the more mistakes you make God has a command that says rest, and God even rested Genesis 2:2,3 God rested on the 7th day When God made the universe, and that was a big job And everyone is to rest It is not that you rest, but you have other people doing your work That would be cheating It would be a boss taking a long break but still expecting the people to do the work while he is gone Or your spouse, or your children, or your animals even If you are a workaholic, you need to slow down and pace yourself The idea is, work 6 days rest 1 day And when you rest, you rest your mind as well Don t be thinking about work! Leave work at work As a Christian, the sabbath rest is more than just rest It is a test of your faith also Faith that God will supply our needs on the other 6 days that you work And the little more work that we would have done on Sunday will not make that much difference in the long scheme of things But if you get in the habit of saying, I ve got to get it done, I have to do it on Sunday You begin to trust in yourself to do all the work Or maybe you just didn t plan well enough the other 6 days The sabbath is rest and a test of our faith, it is also a holy day
II. How do we Keep 1 Day Holy? Vs. 12 Realize that God made the day holy, He wants 1 day to be holy Holy means to sanctify and that means to set it apart It is also a day that is meant to be a blessing for us and to us A day of refreshing and renewal A day to focus on God and focus on rest Realizing that all we have is from God But we have made Sunday into a day to do our own thing Instead of focusing on God we focus on cheap temporary things But maybe you remember Sunday as being a burden There were lots of rules of what you couldn t do The Pharisees of Jesus day did that with the people They made a long list of things you couldn t do And the Sabbath became a burden for the people Almost like you had to go home and lay on your bed and don t do anything. That isn t what the sabbath was about It was meant as a day of enjoyment For Christians there is Sunday when we come together to worship the Lord and enjoy fellowship with other Christians And enjoy ministry to others It is interesting that Jesus often times specifically healed on the Sabbath It should be great joy to minister to others on Sunday And sometimes you get tired doing it, what I call a good tired So we can go home and rest and then enjoy God s presence Take a walk with your wife or family or friends Enjoy a meal together Show your children the great things that God has made Enjoy the out of doors All the time soaking in God and his goodness III. Remember when you were Slaves Vs. 15 None of you are slaves, probably have never been in slavery The Jews were in Egypt, they were forced to work 7 days a week There was no rest for them But with this command, God is giving them a choice as free people God the loving God wants you to rest one day a week The sabbath was meant to be a joy not a burden That is like saying, here is $50, take your wife out to a nice restaurant You have to go out to eat. Would you do it? You wouldn t have to tell me that twice This is one of the best commands, it is good for you IV. Jesus Teaching about the Sabbath As I said earlier, the Pharisees didn t get it, they didn t understand They had reduced everything to dos and don ts The Sabbath rest was no different Jesus was in a synagogue with the people and there was a man with a shriveled hand. This man had suffered for years. The Pharisees asked Jesus, is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath? These men didn t care the suffering man. All they cared about was their added law, and it they interpreted the Sabbath to mean you can t do any kind of work on the Sabbath Even heal a man who was suffering Jesus pointed out to them that if they had a sheep that fell into a hole they would pull it out of the hole to save the sheep That was work. But they wouldn t want a man to be healed Therefore, it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath Matt 12:12 That is not doing work, but helping people and ministering to people Jesus was walking through a grainfield with his disciples And the disciples picked some of the heads of grain and ate them The Pharisees saw this and said, Why are they doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath? They were harvesting grain "The sabbath was made for man, not man for the sabbath," Mark 2:27 The Pharisees were legalistic, every little thing was breaking the law Jesus is bringing us back to the original meaning of the Sabbath It s for our enjoyment Rest and enjoy God
