4 Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array.

5 2 By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work.

6 3 Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done. - Genesis 2:1-3

11 12 Then the Lord said to Moses, 13 Say to the Israelites, You must observe my Sabbaths.

12 This will be a sign between me and you for the generations to come, so you may know that I am the Lord, who makes you holy.

13 14 Observe the Sabbath, because it is holy to you. Anyone who desecrates it is to be put to death; those who do any work on that day must be cut off from their people.

14 15 For six days work is to be done, but the seventh day is a day of sabbath rest, holy to the Lord. Whoever does any work on the Sabbath day is to be put to death.

15 16 The Israelites are to observe the Sabbath, celebrating it for the generations to come as a lasting covenant.

16 17 It will be a sign between me and the Israelites forever, for in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, and on the seventh day he rested and was refreshed.

18 God did it and God said to do it

19 11 For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy. - Exodus 20:11

20 15 Remember that you were slaves in Egypt and that the Lord your God brought you out of there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm.

21 Therefore the Lord your God has commanded you to observe the Sabbath day. - Deuteronomy 5:15

23 Jesus does Shabbat

24 23 One Sabbath Jesus was going through the grain fields, and as his disciples walked along, they began to pick some heads of grain.

25 24 The Pharisees said to him, Look, why are they doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?

26 25 He answered, Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry and in need?

27 26 In the days of Abiathar the high priest, he entered the house of God and ate the consecrated bread, which is lawful only for priests to eat. And he also gave some to his companions.

28 27 Then he said to them, The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. 28 So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath. - Mark 2:23-28

30 1 Another time Jesus went into the synagogue, and a man with a shrivelled hand was there.

31 2 Some of them were looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, so they watched him closely to see if he would heal him on the Sabbath.

32 3 Jesus said to the man with the shrivelled hand, Stand up in front of everyone.

33 4 Then Jesus asked them, Which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to kill? But they remained silent.

34 5 He looked around at them in anger and, deeply distressed at their stubborn hearts, said to the man, Stretch out your hand. He stretched it out, and his hand was completely restored.

35 6 Then the Pharisees went out and began to plot with the Herodians how they might kill Jesus. - Mark 3:1-6

37 What does God intend today?

42 Most of us are so sold on speed, so invested in productivity, so convinced that multi-tasking is the way of life that stopping for one whole day can feel at first like a kind of death.

43 As the adrenaline drains away, you can feel that your heart has stopped beating since you cannot hear your pulse pounding in your temples anymore.

44 As time billows out in front of you, you can have a little panic attack at how much of it you are wasting since time is not only money but also the clock ticking on your life.

45 For reasons like these, plenty of us take an hour here or there and call it Shabbat, which is like driving five miles to the store and calling it Europe.

46 Two hours on a Friday evening is not enough. We need ten times longer than that to calm down enough to draw a deep breath.

47 We need ten times ten to trust the saving rhythms of grace without worrying that our own ambition will yank the rug of rest out from under us. - Barbara Brown Taylor
