3 May, June & July 2012 Scottish Rite News 3 A Visit to the Southern Masonic Jurisdiction by S. P. Rev. Mark E. Megee, 32 For the past five years I have visited Washington, DC for the AMD Masonic Week. It is an exciting, hectic week full of fraternal fun and fellowship to say the least. But regrettably each year I don t get to visit the House of the Temple, Headquarters for the Scottish Rite, Southern Masonic Jurisdiction. This year I was determined to make it. After a brief taxi ride from Union Station in DC, I arrived at the magnificent building. I must have appeared like a typical tourist; walking the steps and taking pictures of the building and photo courtesy of APK, Wikipedia the giant sphinxes that watch over the front entrance. Approaching the door I noticed that it was locked and had to ring the bell which was answered quickly by the security guard. Recognizing me as a brother he immediately took my hat, jacket and bags and made sure I was escorted to the tour that had recently left, and announced that I was a brother who wanted to join the tour. The tour which is free for Freemasons, covered several rooms, and there were three guides to escort the four of us on the tour. The tour guides say that most of the people they escort are Masons, followed by fans of Dan Brown or someone looking for some connection to a conspiracy somewhere. One of the men on our tour was more interested in trying to impress the young Masons he had brought with him, and had to be told quietly quite a few times by his brothers, let the guides do their job. Myself, I was impressed, not just by the building and the walls of paintings of famous 33rds, the paintings of philanthropists who have donated more than a million dollars (men and women) to the Rite, the gavel carved from wood from the Alamo, the Scottish Rite flag that went to the moon, the personal Masonic collection of Albert Pike, the 250,000 volume library but by the people who worked there. It was the guard who recognized me as a brother and made sure I was taken care of. It was the guides who held their tongue from the brother whose zeal and arrogance at times aggravated me and the rest of the group. It was the librarian who saw us coming and smiled, knowing that her peace and quiet was going to be disturbed. Yes, I got to see Southern hospitality and the face of the Scottish Rite, SMJ. It was welcoming and encouraging, and proud of its rich heritage. We would do well to remember that each new member or even our renters sees us as the face of the Scottish Rite, NMJ in our Valley. We too in our Valley should be equally welcoming and encouraging, and proud of our rich heritage of over 100 years of serving the brethren of the Scottish Rite here in Central Jersey. Now if I can just squeeze in a trip to Lexington. {post script: My daughter who just recently attended our December Rose play beat me to it and visited the NMJ Headquarters in Lexington.} Valley of Central Jersey Bordentown, NJ Annual Meeting and Election of Officers (Members only) Tuesday, May 15, 2012 Meeting at 7:30 P.M. in the Central Valley Auditorium To be elected: Treasurer Executive Secretary Board of Trustee (1) 5 year term Executive Council (1) 5 year term Top Three Officers in: Lodge of Perfection Council of Princes of Jerusalem Chapter of Rose Croix Consistory Refreshment will follow meeting in the Dining Hall Look for Scottish Rite Valley of Central Jersey on Facebook
4 4 Scottish Rite News May, June & July 2012
5 May, June & July 2012 Scottish Rite News 5 Feast of Tishri by Michael F. Lakat, 33, MSA, Valley of Central Jersey According to Scripture, in the 480th year after the Exodus from Egypt, in the month of Ziv 1 (the fourth year of the reign of King Solomon), construction of the First Temple on Mount Moriah commenced. 1 Kings 6:1 (NIV). The Temple has variously been known as Solomon s Temple, Jerusalem Temple, and Beit HaMikdash (The Sanctified House). Although it took a total of eleven years to complete, the total time expended in the actually construction was seven years. Completed in the month of Bul 2 it was dedicated by King Solomon on the 15th day of the seventh month of the Hebrew calendar, i.e., Tishri (late September to late October), in or about 953 BCE. Sukkoth (Feast of Booths or Feast of Tabernacles) celebrates the harvest and commemorates the period after the Exodus from Egypt during which the Jews wandered in the wilderness and lived in huts. Sukkoth was agricultural in origin; coming as it did at the completion of the harvest, Sukkoth was regarded as a general thanksgiving for the bounty of nature in the year that had passed. It became one of the most important feasts in Judaism, as indicated by its designation as the Feast of the Lord (Lev. 23:39; Judges 21:19) or simply the Feast. (1 Kings 8:2). Perhaps because of its wide attendance, Sukkoth became the appropriate time for important state ceremonies. Moses instructed the Jews to gather for a reading of the Law during Sukkoth every seventh year (Deut. 31:10-11). Recognizing its importance, King Solomon dedicated the Temple on Sukkoth (1 Kings 8; 2 Chronicle 7). Sukkoth was also the first sacred occasion observed after the resumption of sacrifices in Jerusalem following the Babylonian captivity (Ezra 3:2-4). The Feast of Tishri in Freemasonry derives from Sukkoth which is marked chiefly by the building of temporary structures (sukkah, sing.; sukkoth, pl.) made of boards, canvass, etc. and roofed with branches, especially pine branches. These structures are built against or near a house or synagogue and used during the Festival chiefly as dining areas. Beginning on the 15th day of the month of Tishri, which is 2012 corresponds to sunset on October 13th until sundown on October 19th (Hoshanah Rabbah). On the last day of the Feast, a reading of the Pentateuch is completed, and a new cycle begins. The origins and significances of the Feast of Tishri make it the most Scottish Rite of festivals. Although originally celebrated as a harvest and gathering festival, no other occasion epitomizes the character and purpose of the Rite more wholly than this historic celebration, held in conjunction with the dedication of King Solomon s Temple (2 Chronicles 7:8-10). To marshal the meanings of the Feast is to summarize the principal ideals and traditions of our Fraternity. The Southern Masonic Jurisdiction (SMJ) of the Scottish Rite observes the Feast of Tishri because it is an age-old custom which now has the power of law. Under the Statutes of the Supreme Council (SMJ), the Feast is considered an obligatory observance a sharing of the Fraternal spirit. Freemasons have always revered order since recognizing that there is a Supreme Order that structures all creation. Masonic Law emulates this Divine order, and we serve the purposes of the Great Architect of the Universe when we meet in the bonds of Brotherhood, intent on making contributions to humanity. The Feast is slowly gaining in popularity in the Northern Jurisdiction. This is the time when Scottish Rite Masons renew their obligations to each other and to humanity. It is also a time of celebration of the bonds they enjoy and to give thanks for the bounteous blessings our Creator has provided and the hope of things to come. The Feast of Tishri promises to all men that the burdens of tyranny are temporary, that the darkness will yield to light, that knowledge will conquer ignorance, and that the Creator intended men to be free. The message of Tishri comes to us strongly and clearly from across the ages because it has been so preserved in the symbolism and allegory of the Scottish Rite. Through our observance of this great feast of thanksgiving, we, as heir of Solomon, perpetuate his magnificent Temple of freedom in our lives, our communities, our country and, most of all, in our beloved Rite.

7 May, June & July 2012 Scottish Rite News 7 How Can I Help My Valley? In our Scottish Rite Valley there are many areas in which one can become active. Without the assistance of our members, we could not confer the degrees at our Reunions. There is always a need for Degree Personnel for speaking and nonspeaking parts, Stage Crew, Make-Up, Wardrobe, Clean-up Crew and Light Maintenance of the Building. We want to re-activate the Stewards, can you help out? We are looking for active Masons who are willing to represent the Scottish Rite in your Blue Lodge. We have a Thursday morning work crew who can always use another pair of hands! Should you have the time and are interested in helping, please call us at the Valley Office at (609) or valleyofcentralj@comcast.net. Looking forward to hearing from you! Wardrobe Assistance Sublime Princes We are seeking a few volunteers to assist in the wardrobe department during our Reunions to help the degree actors with their costumes. As we have but two (2) Reunions a year, this is not a very stressful position and can be lots of fun. Please contact the Valley office or William Morelli the Junior Warden in the Rose Croix line.
