1 Week of July 28, 2013 Lessons for the Leader When we think of "neighbors," we usually think of people who live in close proximity to our home. Are your neighbors easy or difficult to get along with? Are they similar to you or is there great diversity in the neighborhood? In Luke 10, Jesus told a parable that helps us better understand the concept of "neighbor." Read Luke 10: Picture the scene: Jesus and His disciples were among a crowd of people. An expert in the law challenged Jesus with a question. Why do you think Jesus responded with a question? After correctly reciting a portion of law, the expert insisted on asking another question. Why did he ask who his neighbor was? Did he really want to be neighborly? Read verses Jesus told a story. A Jewish man was beaten and robbed on his way to Jericho. A priest and a Levite failed to stop to help him, but a Samaritan a person despised by Jews stopped and demonstrated compassion to the man. How often are you like the priest or the Levite? When have you demonstrated compassion like the Samaritan? Read verses After telling the parable, Jesus returned to the question that sparked the story by asking who in the story proved to be the neighbor. Even the expert could not argue that the one who was kind and helpful the Samaritan was the neighbor. The hatred for Samaritans was so great, the expert had trouble even saying the word. How does Jesus' command to go and do the same relate to us? Ask yourself: Do you treat each preschooler you teach with the same kindness and helpfulness? What about those who are more difficult to get along with or who are not like you? What do these symbols mean? 1a Application Activities Format: Follow the numbers with arrows for a 30-minute, large group plus 20-minute Application Activities format. Open your Bible to Luke 10 and tell the story, taping pictures as noted. The Good Samaritan Based on Luke 10:25-37 One day Jesus and some men were talking. One man was an expert in the law (lawyer). Page 2 of 23
3 The man knew and understood the rules and commandments. The man knew God wanted him to love God and love his neighbors. [1, Beginning] To test Jesus, the expert asked, "Who is my neighbor?" Jesus answered his question with a story. A man was traveling from Jerusalem to Jericho. A group of robbers attacked the man, beat him up, and left him beside the road. [2, Middle] A priest, or temple helper, walked down the road. When the priest saw the hurt man, the priest walked to the other side of the road and did not help. Then another temple helper, a Levite, saw the hurt man. He also walked to the other side of the road and did not help. [3, Middle] A third man, a Samaritan, came along. The Samaritan saw the hurt man and had compassion, or love and care for the man. The Samaritan stopped and bandaged the hurt man's wounds. [4, Middle] The Samaritan put the hurt man on his own animal and took the hurt man to an inn. The next day the Samaritan gave the innkeeper money to take care of the man. [5, Middle] The Samaritan promised the innkeeper more money if needed when he returned. [6, End] After telling the story, Jesus asked the expert who acted like a neighbor to the man. Ask: "Who do you think acted like a neighbor?" Invite responses. The expert answered that the Samaritan acted like a neighbor because he was kind to the hurt man. Jesus told the expert to go and be kind like the Samaritan. 9aReview the Bible Story (4 minutes) Gauze, scissors, tape, completed "Story Pictures" from step 8 Print "Teaching Picture 9 Good Samaritan" and "Review Questions" (CD). Cover the teaching picture with gauze strips. Quiz as to what happened at the beginning, middle, and end of the story. Display the teaching picture. Invite children to lift one piece of gauze at a time and describe what they see. Read aloud questions, pausing for responses. 10 Learn the Bible Verse (4 minutes) Paper, marker Print Luke 10:37 from your preferred translation. Teacher Tip Print "Luke 10:37 Paraphrase" (CD). Display and read aloud the verse. Explain: "In this verse, we learn whom Jesus wants us to be like. Does He want us to be like the priest and Levite or like the Samaritan? (Samaritan) The people in our story were walking to Jericho. Stand up. Let's travel around the room. Each time we stop, we will say the verse." Invite the children to follow you. Stop several times and say the verse together. 11aUse Worship Guides (7 minutes) Worship Guides, crayons Distribute materials. Guide kids to complete Worship Guide activities. 6 Scissors, hole punch, yarn Print "Name Signs" (CD). Cut apart signs and punch holes in the top corners. Cut lengths of yarn to tie through the holes to make signs into necklaces. Worship Through Games Play Kindness Tag Ask: "Who were the people in our Bible story?" (Jesus, expert in law or lawyer, robbers, hurt man, priest, Levite, Samaritan, innkeeper) Review the Bible story as each person is named. Choose three kids to be the priest, Levite, and Samaritan. Give them the signs to wear around their necks. Instruct: "We'll play a kindness tag game. This game is like freeze tag. When the priest [point] or Levite [point] tags you, freeze and do not move. Only the Samaritan [point] can tag and unfreeze you. When the Samaritan unfreezes you, say 'I can be kind.' " Show children where the boundaries are and play. Change priest, Levite, and Samaritan every so often. Play several rounds. Review: "In our Bible story, what did the priest and Levite do? (walked away without helping) Who stopped to help? (Samaritan) Whom does God want us to be like? (Samaritan) How can we be like the Samaritan? (help people, pray for others, be kind to all people, etc.) Now when the Samaritan unfreezes you, name a way you can be kind." Play as time permits. Lead kids to say the Bible verse (Luke 10:37). (walked away without helping) Who stopped to help? (Samaritan) Whom does God want us to be like? (Samaritan) Let's make books about being kind. We can decorate the books and draw pictures or glue words to show ways to be kind." Distribute supplies. Instruct: "Cut apart the letters along the dotted lines [display]. When you finish decorating your books, we'll put them together. What are the letters on the papers?" Invite kids to say the letters. Comment: "These letters spell the word kind. God wants us to be kind to people. Glue the small strips of words to the pages with the letters. All of the strips are ways to be kind." Read aloud strips as you assist kids with gluing. Assemble and bind books (staple or hole punch and add yarn on the side of pages by letters). Invite kids to show their books. Ask: "How can we be like the Samaritan? (help people, pray for others, be kind to all people, etc.) We glued in our books ways to be kind. Try to be kind in as many ways as you can this week. We can be kind."
