1 Week of September 30, 2012 Lessons for the Leader When did you start learning from the Bible? Did your parents quote Scripture or read the Bible to you as a child? Timothy had been taught about the Scriptures all of his life. He became someone whom people listened to and believed. Read Acts 16:1-3. Paul met Timothy. Timothy was well liked and well versed in the Scriptures. Paul mentored Timothy throughout his ministry. Who mentored you? Whom do you mentor? Read 2 Timothy 1:1-5. Paul was nearing death as he wrote this letter to Timothy. What did Paul say and desire? Whom do you pray for daily? Whom do you desire to see because they exude happiness as a result of their faith in Christ? Read 2 Timothy 3:14. What was the first thing Paul told Timothy to do? Stand firm. Do you stand firm in your beliefs? Do you believe all you have learned about the Bible and the Christian walk? Read 2 Timothy 3:15. What wisdom do the Scriptures give? What is the most important thing to share with people? When was the last time you talked of salvation with a lost person? Read 2 Timothy 3:16. Describe the Scriptures from these verses. Do you use the Scriptures for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training? We can teach anyone these basics beginning with our preschoolers. The Bible contains verses that tell us how to live, what not to do, how to correct, and how to train. How do you use the Bible when working with preschoolers? Read 2 Timothy 3:17. Why do we need the Scriptures? The Bible equips us for what life throws at us, teaches us how to live, and helps us know what God wants us to do. Read the Bible daily so you will do God's will. What do these symbols mean? 1a Application Activities Format: Follow the numbers with arrows for a 30-minute, large group plus 20-minute Application Activities format. 1 Follow all the numbers for a 45- to 60-minute large group only format. 3 Timothy Learned from the Scriptures Based on Acts 16:1-3; 2 Timothy 1:1-5; 3:14-17 Paul went to a town called Lystra (LISS truh). While there, Paul met a man named Timothy. Timothy's mother and grandmother had taught Timothy about the Scriptures since he was a baby. The people liked Timothy and listened to him. Timothy traveled with Paul to tell people about Jesus. Display teaching picture. Later, Paul wrote Timothy a letter. Paul told Timothy how he thanked God for Timothy and prayed for him all the time. Paul wanted to see Timothy again. Paul reminded Timothy to continue to do as his mother and grandmother had taught him. Paul told Timothy to do what the Scriptures taught. Paul said that all Scriptures are from God. The Scriptures help us learn what God wants us to do. 11aReview the Bible Story (4 minutes) Index cards or scrap paper, marker Print the following letters on separate cards or papers: A, B, G, T, P. Tell me what person or item from our story begins with that letter or sound." Give hints for each letter. 6 Plastic tub, similar floating toys, masking tape, permanent marker, container (trash can, basket, or box), ball, water Print Bible with a permanent marker on a small piece of masking tape. Tape it to the bottom of 1 floating toy. Add a couple of inches of water to the tub (so toys float). Place tub at 1 end of the room. Tape a starting line at the opposite end of room from the tub. Place container and ball to the side. Worship Through Games Play Games Line up children in a single-file line behind the starting line. Say: "We'll take turns running to the tub. Pick up one toy. If the toy has a word printed on the bottom, yell 'Bible,' and put the toy back in the water. Return to the end of the line. If the toy has nothing on the bottom, put it back without yelling and return to the end of the line." Help the children run the relay. Ask: "What does the Bible teach us?" Encourage responses. Say: "The Bible teaches us what God wants us to do. The Bible tells us to be kind, help others, pray, go to church, and learn from the Bible." Place the empty container a few feet from the starting line. Say: "Let's try to shoot the ball into the container. When your ball lands in the container, tell us something about the Bible story." Review the Bible story as kids toss and tell. Say: "Timothy's mother and grandmother taught him about God. Paul invited Timothy to join him to tell other people about Jesus. This time as we shoot the ball, name someone who tells you about the Bible." Invite kids to shoot again. Allow kids to shoot the ball or play with water toys as time permits. Pray. Bibles, scissors Print "What the Bible Teaches" (CD) and cut apart. Hide the verses all around the room. Teacher Tip Looking for additional resources to enhance your teaching? Assign each group a symbol or picture. Explain: "I hid 24 verses around the room. Each team will search for 12 verses that have the team's symbol on them. If the paper does not have your symbol, leave it where it is. Bring all of your papers to the tables when you find them." Assist groups as they search for the verses. Read aloud the verses. Ask: "In what book can I look for these verses? (Bible) The Bible teaches us how to live. Paul wrote to Timothy to continue to do what he had learned from the Bible. We can do what the Bible says." Invite each team to hide the verses for the other team to find. Gather all verses. Review the Bible story. Lead kids to say the Bible verse (2 Timothy 3:15). 13 Hi, friends! My name is Micah. I am 8 years old. I heard you were learning about the Bible. I want to tell you something special. In the Bible story, you learned about a boy named Timothy. Paul, a missionary in the Bible, wrote letters to Timothy. We can read the letters in the New Testament in the Books of 1 and 2 Timothy. Paul reminded Timothy how Timothy s mother and grandmother had taught him from the Scriptures since he was a young child... probably younger than you are right now. Paul reminded Timothy that it was important for Timothy to continue to read and learn from the Scriptures. My parents have taught me from the Bible since I was a baby. Maybe your parents have, too. Maybe you ve been going to church since you were a baby, just like I have. Always remember to keep learning from the Bible. The Bible teaches us how to live. The Bible is the most important book ever! Your Friend, Micah Micah's Letter (September 30) Page 13 of 16
