2 Babu Jagjjiivan Ram Sttudiies,, Research and Exttensiion Centtre UNIIVERSIITY OF MYSORE Manasagangottrrii,, Mysorre--06 is one of the most illustrious leaders of our country. His name has been one of those embossed in golden letters on the political scenario of India for the crucial role he played on various occasions thus contributing to the progress of our country. With a view to carry out an in-depth study into his contribution and to disseminate the basic tenets and values propounded by him, the University of Mysore, with the munificent financial assistance by the State Government, established Studies, Research and Extension Centre. The University of Mysore is one of the oldest universities in the country which has always been initiating new experiments and innovative programmes in the field of higher education setting its leadership edge in reaching the fruits of higher education to larger masses. In this connection, Study chair was inaugurated on August 18 th 2003 in the University of Mysore. First Babu Jagjivan Chair in the Nation to have an independent building constructed out of from the MP and MLA fund given by Sri. C.H. Vijayashankar and Sri. H.S. Shankarlinge Gowda. At Present, the chair has become a part of the Studies, Research and Extension Centre which came into being from June, The Centre is engaged in pursuing its studies and research pertaining to, his life and works, his illustrious political career, speeches and contribution to the development of the nation. The Centre, endowed with a practical outlook, is also endeavouring more to carry the ideals of Babuji to remote corners of city and rural belts. It is also joining hands with several Governmental and other agencies in reaching out valuable information of the programmes and facilities offered by the Government towards the cause of rural development, upliftment of the rural masses, women empowerment and betterment of the downtrodden. Honorable speaker of the Lok Sabha Dr. Meira Kumar laid the foundation stone for the Centre s new building on May 18, 2010 which is on the verge of completion. The new building is going to accommodate a seminar hall, class rooms and library. 2

3 Objectives of the Centre 1. To study s thoughts and ideals and their relevance to contemporary society. 2. To study the impact of social-political and economic factors on Jagjivan Ram s thinking and ideology. 3. To compare and contrast and ideologies with other socio-political thinkers in the context of reconstruction of Indian society. 4. To establish s perception of socio-economic change. 5. To establish exhibition/museum. 6. To Propagate the philosophy and ideologies of Babuji s thoughts and their relevance to modern society by way of taking his message to rural areas by means of extension programmes. 7. To offer courses at different levels on various areas and the ideals of Babu Jagjivan Ram. 8. To undertake research on and about and his thinking and related areas. Publication of the Centre: 1. Bharathadalli Jaati Paddatiya Savalugalu The Centre is already brought out a book by name Bharathadalli Jaati Paddatiya Savalugalu which is a translation of Babuji s book Caste Challenge in India in English. Anantharamaiah, Prof. C. Naganna, Dr. S. Anjaneya The Centre is also contemplating in going ahead with a publication programme in order to bring out books in Kannada by and about Babu Jagjivanram. A Programme to bring out Dekhi Suni Beeti Batein by Mrs. Indranidevi Jagjivan Ram in four Volumes in Kannada is also being contemplated of Kannada and Culture of the Government of Karnataka has come forward to finance this project. The Centre is also publishing two books in which one is a collection of selected special lecturers delivered by the renowned scholars during various extension activities and another book by name Dakshina Bharathada Dalitha Santharu pertaining to dalit saints of south India. The centre plans to take-up research in variety of areas and bring out the result of the research in the form of publications. It also plans to bring out books for popular reading on and about Dr. and other Social thinkers. Seminars and Extension Activities The Centre conducts Seminars at state as well as national levels and extension activities both in urban areas and rural areas with an intention of propagating the ideologies and thoughts of. The Centre also conducts extension programmes regularly on topics of current interest including health, education, government policies and programmes for the welfare of the poor. Future Plans of the Centre The Studies, Research and Extension Centre shall be one of the important research Centres of the University of Mysore and is engaged in research and extension activities reflecting Babuji s thoughts on different issues and areas. Such activities and extension programmes would be on various social issues relating to agriculture, economics, food production, defence management, labour welfare, secularism, social harmony, women studies and ideals of. The Centre is also intending to include a paper on, his life and works as a CBCS subject for Master Degree students. 4

5 Museum The Centre is planning to have a museum in which photos and available items depicting the life, achievements and career of Babuji are going to be displayed. Library It is planned to develop specialized collection of books and other learning resources including e-resources on and about and other thinkers and as well on problems of weaker section of the society. The library of the Centre has a modest collection of books on and areas of his activities and achievements in Kannada, English and Hindi. The Library is being contemplated to be named after where books on Babuji published in all languages are expected to be made available for the use of researchers and students.
