If you have lost them, get them back even though you may have to get them from the apostates. -Imam Ali (as) Al-Hadi Highlights The month of April was a very busy one for the Al-Hadi Family. Over sixty students from KG through Gr. 9 competed in the final round of the 7th Annual Quran Competition held on April 5th & 6th, Students were evaluated on memorization as well as recitation. Fifteen students from AHS Middle School competed in the Rocketry Contest sponsored by TARC, under the guidance of Sr. Ranjan Dhanji (AHS Middle School Math Teacher). The goal of the contest is for students to use their Math and Science knowledge to build and test model rockets. This year, rockets were designed to reach an altitude (as close as possible to) 825 feet and to stay airborne for between 40 and 45 seconds, using streamers to slow down the descent of the rocket so that the raw egg encased within remains unbroken. Although the Team II rocket tested at NASA met the qualifying score, the score did not place in the top hundred flights, and Team II did not advance to the national fly-off scheduled for May 15th, Nearly 700 teams from public and private school in 46 states competed in this contest. AHS Middle School students also participated in the Houston Bar Association s Juvenile Justice Mock Trial Program under the guidance of Sr. Haleema Goense (AHS Academic Coordinator and Middle School Language and Social Studies Teacher). Students developed a case story (relating to animal cruelty) and assumed the roles of judge, jurors, attorneys, defendants, plaintiffs and witnesses. The 40 participating classes traveled to the Harris County courthouse complex where they acted out their mock trial in an actual courtroom, through cooperation with the Harris County Judiciary. What s Going On in Your IEC Community? The Long Term Planning Committee is preparing to deliver its first report to the Board about ways to accommodate the growth of IEC. Look for results in next month s issue. The Board is conducting a thorough review of the finances of IEC, in order to find ways to boost revenue and reduce costs. Shaheed Murtaza Mutahhari, in an article titled "Humanity and The Holy Quran," describes that the human being is the only creature who has the potential of willingly conducting his or her self within the framework of laws. However, he explains that such a person is only responsible towards the obligations of the law when that person has met certain conditions. Those conditions are 1) puberty, 2) knowledge and awareness of the law, 3) ability to perform an obligation, 4) free-will, and 5) mental sanity. The below excerpt is a translation from Shaheed Mutahhari's article that expands upon the condition of mental sanity. Mental Sanity: Another condition of having liability for the discharge of obligations is mental sanity. One without sanity, who lacks the power of understanding, has no obligation towards the law. His or her case is similar to that of a minor during the period of his or her minority (pre-baligh age). Even on attaining majority (bulugh) a person is not obligated to perform acts which he or she missed as a minor. For example, an adult is not obligated to complete the prayers which was not offered during infancy, for at that time the law was not addressed to him. A lunatic during his lunacy is also not obligated. Hence if that person later regains sense, that person will not be obligated to perform the prayers and the fasts which were missed during the period of lunacy. That person will be obligated only to carry them out subsequent to recovery. Same is the case of the religious taxes like, Zakat and Khums, which may become due on the property of a minor or a lunatic. A minor or a lunatic is liable to pay them only after reaching the stage of being obligated, if not already paid by his or her legal guardian. Conditions of Validity of actions: here are some conditions which are the conditions of applicability and validity both and there are some other conditions which are the conditions of either applicability only or of validity only. The conditions of validity are again of three kinds. Some of them are the conditions of the validity of both the acts of worship and transactions; some of the validity of the acts of worship only and some of the validity of transactions only. Mental soundness is a condition prerequisite to applicability and validity both. An insane person is neither fit for the application of law nor is his acts, whether they are acts of worship or transactions, valid. For example, if a lunatic performs pilgrimage on behalf of somebody else, his pilgrimage will not be in order. Similarly he cannot offer prayers or fast on behalf of anyone else, nor can he be an intermediary between the imam (one who leads the prayers) and the mamums (followers) or between the various sections of the mamums in congregational prayers. Ability like sanity is the condition of the applicability of law as well as that of the validity of acts. Same is the case with non-coercion. The obligation of a man forcibly constrained is waived. If a person under duress carries out a transaction or enters into a marriage contract, his action will be void and invalid. Funds collected from members of the IEC community and other donors were delivered for the purchase of an Isuzu Rodeo SUV truck, which the Al Mahdi Community in Haiti desperately needed in order to deliver supplies. To date, Alhamdulillah, the IEC community has collected and distributed nearly $35,000 to the Al Mahdi Community for the purchase of: food, tents, medical supplies, hygiene packs, toys, demolition work needed to rebuild the Al-Mahdi Center and an Isuzu Rodeo SUV truck. Despite the generous support of the IEC and other donors, the Al-Mahdi Community of Haiti still needs ongoing support to cover their food supplies until jobs become available. The community requires $3,000 per month to feed 300 plus members of the community. Please continue to send your tax deductible donations to the IEC in referenced to Haiti. 5 Page 5 Year of the Youth: Program Highlights On Saturday, April 3rd at around 1:00 pm, the youth began to trickle into the Islamic Education Center. Salaat e Zhuhrayn was performed in congregation, which included many male and female youth attendees. After prayer, Maulana Shabbiri discussed two important points regarding the Youth, that is: (i) Allah (swt) answers the prayer of the sincere youth; and (ii) Allah (swt) loves the youth who upholds Islam. Following the short speech, basketballs and soccer balls were distributed to the youth, and the young males and females participated in sports, including children from the age of 5 years old up to young adults 21 years old. Other games available included table tennis and football. The older brothers of the community helped to facilitate the games to ensure everyone had a good time. In addition, free beverages were provided while burgers, franks and fries were sold at a discount. Overall, the Year of the Youth program was successful, with a good turnout of youth and many supportive Parents. Some youth and parents suggested that we form sports teams for the IEC community. The IEC youth can compete with each other and with other Houston Muslim communities. There are many positive opportunities for the IEC youth to pursue. It is planned that the Year of the Youth will continue on a monthly basis, and sports teams will be organized in the near future. The next event will be held on May 29 from 5pm until Maghreb.
